Publisher's Summary

A man who survived being drowned ends up in Manchester’s canal. Someone who was hit by a car is shoved in front of DC Archie Davey’s patrol vehicle.

Killers generally aren’t a happy bunch, but this particular one seems to have a problem with second chances.

Luckily for DI Jessica Daniel, things are looking up. She’s been assigned to work on the most crime-free estate in the city, and she’s back living with her best friend.

Things could not be hunky-dorier.

That is unless there’s a sinister reason why the estate is so free of trouble....

Beyond Disappointing

The series has become terribly mundane. Jessica continues to blunder through cases and her personal life, which simply does not warrant following subsequent episodes. JD was never especially likeable, but her life, colleagues and cases always held your interest - time to retire the series - it feels like the author decided that several books ago.

It's like seeing your best pal

I really love This series of detective books. She's smart and sassy and not afraid to do her job. They are so we'll read as well that it really is like have a bestie tell you a story. Can't wait for the next one now 🙄

Grating and badly written

The premise is great so I really wanted to like this book but a few things stopped me:

1. It’s way too long, the story is much longer than it really needs to be.

2. The narrator’s “Madchester” accent really starts to grate after a couple of hours.

3. The way this story is written is really jarring. It is shot through with humour which sits at odds with the serious subject matter. Wouldn’t be so bad if it was actually funny but it’s not, it’s dire.

4. Just as one single example of how poor this book can be, I’ll just present the example of the bobbing head figure in chapter 44. Ridiculous.

Becky Hindley makes these books!

I have been enjoying this, but with 1 hour and 28 minutes to go, I’m struggling. The story is good, but it feels a little exhausted at this point. Wilkinson writes a good tale, but there is nearly always a bit of sloppy writing here and there. Becky Hindley’s narration is always marvellous, and here, she elevates an average story, bringing it to life.

Not the best in the series

Having read the whole series up to this point, I have been held by the characters and the back stories that parallel the various crimes and investigations. I think that this book focussed a little too much on the lives of the main characters and this was detrimental to the story. The concept of murders being linked to accidents is a good one but how this plays out and the damp squib of a finale was disappointing. The whole modern-day Fagin parallel crime was very weak although it did bring the most gripping part of the story. If this was your first DCI JD book then you might not take the time to read others but I would recommend starting at book 1. I am about to start reading the latest in the series. I hope this one is an improvement. Becky Hindley’s performance and characterisations are as high quality as ever.

Good book

While this isn't as good as most Kerry Wilkinson books, it is still a great book with lots going on..

Writing doesn't serve interesting scenario

Narrators voice does not characterise well. The plot is interesting but writing pedestrian. Would be interested to listen to an earlier book in what seems to be a popular series. Might be more satisfactory.

Bit of a mish-mash

this book kept jumping between 2 stories which was confusing and, at times, boring. and an updates of her personal life/ relationships on top of everything else didn't help.
