chick flick without the video

I am a pretty tolerant listener, and I am not sexist but I had to give up on this one. A bad combination of reader and author to me. Reader was just to light and airy. The story itself is ok, but not enough to carry you through the tedious and prolonged emotional internal dialogs and thoughts of all the characters. Some authors enhance their characters in this way, this one made me sick of them. The emotions were so contrived. No one really thinks, talks or acts like this. It read more like an idealistic romance novel for a 12 to 13 year old junior high girl. My wife got this for us to listen to together on a long car trip, and we both had had enough before the end.

Absurd

If you believe that the three movers and shakers in a small town will do horrendous things out of loyalty and friendship to their comrades with whom they’re not really that friendly, then this is the story for you. Oh, and you’ll also need to except the fact that one of the two star crossed lovers allows himself to be exiled for 17 years, never looking back, and never really understanding the reason why.

Great story

I really enjoyed the story and the twists and turns! It kept me wanting to know what happens next! I loved how it took me on several journeys at the same time but flowed with the ease of a calm but tumultuous river! However, I hated the language in it! I don’t like to read/listen to books with vulgar language and especially when they take my Lord’s name in vain. I would love to hear more from this author but unfortunately I will not because of the language. It’s not necessary to have a good story and don’t understand why it has to be written in. Best wishes to this author but I will not be following.

Wish she wrote more often!!

The first book I listened to by Nancy Pickard was, "The scent of rain and lightning." It's still by far my favorite, but this one did not disappoint! She is a great storyteller and I only wish she'd write more!

Fantastic!

Nancy Pickard is brilliant! She understands small town life better than anyone else. She keeps you guessing and throws in twists and surprises throughout. Get this book immediately, you will not be disappointed!

Ok and kept me interested

I was kept interested to know what happened next, but the plot had a lot of holes, once you knew what happened. The reader was great at narrating but took me out of the story when she tried to do some of the voices.

Main plot was great, but...

The murder mystery pulled me in at the start, and kept me from putting it down when the cheesy , starry-eyed, bodice-ripping scenes (which were not even well written) sorely tempted me to toss it aside. The novel would have been great without them , and they detracted from the overall effect. Yes, the relationship between Abby and Mitch is integral to the story, but this was a case where less would have been more, and all of the mooning and descriptions of Mitch's broad shoulders tapering down to his narrow waist disgusted me. So unnecessary, when the plot was so exciting and kept me guessing until the very end!

The Ending

I really enjoyed this book, but the sudden ending seemed very rushed to me and a bit unsatisfactory. Would the adults really stay friends? Not in any world I could imagine. And my most troubling question that didn’t seem answer, why did Mitch’s parent as send him away? I listened to the last several chapters three times and I feel this wasn’t answered. I really want to know darn it!
