Publisher's Summary

The line between their world and ours is thinner than we think....

The sleepy, eastern Washington wheat town of Antioch has become a gateway for the supernatural - from sightings of angels and a weeping crucifix to a self-proclaimed prophet with an astounding message.

The national media and the curious all flock to the little town - a great boon for local business but not for Travis Jordan. The burned-out former pastor has been trying to hide his past in Antioch. Now the whole world is headed to his backyard to find the Messiah, and in the process, every spiritual assumption he has ever held will be challenged. The startling secret behind this visitation ultimately pushes one man into a supernatural confrontation that has eternal consequences.

My Favorite Peretti Novel

This story was a little less on the supernatural from some of his other books, still there but not as much. The story does a great job of showing how one man loses his fatih and regains it in the end. Author does a wonderful job of showing how people can fall for promises of a fake Messiah and the outcome of that mistake. Well written and read.

Insightful and very well written

Perreti continues to be an exceptional word-smith. He paints such vivid pictures of life, religion, conflict, faith and personal struggle that I am completely immersed in the story and identifying on a deep level with his characters. Far from dry or “sermonizing,” his stories pull you into fantastic and gripping narratives that bring chills, laughter and tears in turn. I can’t recommend his books enough. The narration is excellent as well! Neither dull or so dramatic that it becomes distracting. Well done all the way ‘round.

Slow start, great second half comeback!

The narration was well done. The story was overall well written, however the beginning of the story and some of the flashbacks were a little drawn out. Not one of Perittis best but well worth the listen!

Shift in the last couple of chapters doesn't flow

The shift from the protagonist going from an alleged a good guy too bad guy was too sudden and messy.

Enthralling - Challenging - Insightful - Timely

Enthralling - I could hardly put it down. Listened to it through in just two days. Character development was superb, although it does take a minute to work out who is who - but worth the investment in time and focus.

Challenging - I suspect this book will be challenging for believers of all backgrounds. Personally, I come from a Pentecostal background, and this book is direct and unapologetic in the narrative. Whichever side of that playground you find yourself, brace yourself. You will be challenged. (But hang in there and don’t judge it till the end.)

Insightful - it’s obvious this book is written by someone who has experienced some of the themes and has an excellent understanding of the ‘why’s’ behind many things that happen in those environments.

Timely - With the condition in our world at the time of this writing, I recently re-read the book of Revelation. I can’t help but wonder if the timeliness of this plot line is more significant than merely a great story. You can form your own opinion there~

Clean version of "Needful Things"

This story reminds me a little of Stephen Kings, "Needful things" without the vulgarity and profanity. A mysterious stranger comes to town and turns the townspeople on each other, but one discerning ex pastor digs into the strangers past to find a horrible secret that will being the reign of terror to an end. Fascinating characters, and interesting memories of a Pentecostal upbringing that hit home for me. Excellent story, highly recommend especially for people brought up in church.
