Publisher's Summary

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter begins a dark, sexy new series—Rise of the Warlords—with a fan favorite character from her beloved Lords of the Underworld series, Taliyah Skyhawk. The ice maiden faces off with her greatest enemy, a villain brutal beyond imagining.

For centuries, Taliyah Skyhawk has prepared to become Harpy General, leader of the deadliest female army in existence. One of the requirements? Remain a virgin. But, for a chance to save her people, she must wed the fearless leader of the Astra Planeta, Alaroc Phaethon.

The time has come for Roc to sacrifice another virgin bride to his god. There has never been a woman alluring enough to tempt him from his path. No warrioress powerful enough to overcome his incredible strength. No enchantress desirable enough to make him burn beyond reason. Until now.

With the clock ticking, war between husband and wife ignites. Except Taliyah never expected the merciless king to challenge the future she once envisioned. She certainly never anticipated the thrill of their battles turning into games… The problem is, only one spouse can survive.

Love is a battlefield in Showalter's The Warlord.

Narration suffers on fair story

Not that this story was great but what ever grand potential it had died under this abysmal narration. The female voice was so terrible, especially when she was playing at being seductive. Im not a huge fan if this author but like her okay. I probably wont finish the series as its not worth a credit to me.

Icky

I realize the world and characters described here are supposed to be unreal so the author takes readers away from reality for a while, but readers still want human nature to shine through. Regardless of how hunky the Warlord is, I cannot fathom how this story would be appealing to anyone. He murdered countless brides so he would be bestowed gifts from the gods--or something like that. Taliyah shows up and the conflicts begin. I did not understand how she could be dead and not adhere to the descriptions of a phantom. That is just part of it. Why would a woman still want this guy knowing his intent is to kill her? There is some good stuff in here, great zingers from Taliyah, but the story is uncomfortable. The narrator grows on you. I wonder how guys read stories like this without laughing.

A book worthy of Taliyah Skyhawk

I enjoyed this melding of familiar characters with a whole new group. Good stand alone, satisfying for fans of Gena's Lords of the Underworld series.

Very good!

I haven't been a fan of Gena Showalter, but when I heard of this new book and read the description, I knew I needed to dig in and see if she could finally pull me in. And she did. To my surprise, this is the first book of hers that had me squirming in delight. It reminded me a lot of Kresley Cole's IAD series, which might be why it pulled me in so easily.

The heroine is strong, cold, and a complete badass. This of course throws off our hero, but don't worry, he is more than up for the challenge of handling her. He needs to get her to the altar and sacrifice her while she has plans of her own. I don't want to give too much away because this was such a great book!

Thank you for the wonderful read! I can't wait for more in the series!

Amazing story and really well told.

This is one of those stories that you just couldn't stop listening to. the story has adventure romance twists and Turns and the voice actor is really clear ear and sounds sexy which fits the part of Roc really well. Another amazing story by Gena showalter and I can't wait for the next.

A brilliant start to a new series

I love the worlds/realms Gena Showalter creates, and as a spin-off on the Lords of the Underworld series, I get a new story in one of my favourite worlds. It helps if you have read the Lords of the Underworld series, but it is not necessary as the book stands on its own.

The wordplay between the main characters is hilarious and had me laughing, and the romance scenes are scorching.

I can't wait for the next book.
