Story
The wind screams. The dark night is freezing. Vossk, a Vostroyan Firstborn, shrinks into a rock against a howl of memories. Having disgraced himself by deserting his post during a terrifying encounter, Vossk had resigned himself to penal servitude, though yearned for the chance to redeem himself. Story
In the midst of a vast gas nebula lies a remote watch-station, hanging silently against a tapestry of dying stars. It sits alone, patiently awaiting lost travellers adrift in the freezing vastness of the void. To such souls it appears as a blessing, a safe haven from the warp storms that wrack the immaterium and destroy the ships of those foolish enough to test the tides. To Captain Arq and her crew, it is one thing - refuge. But things are never so simple.

Story
Before the being called the Emperor revealed himself, before the rise of the aeldari, before the necrontyr traded their flesh for immortal metal, the world was born in violence. Even when they inhabited bodies of flesh, Trazyn the Infinite and Orikan the Diviner were polar opposites. Trazyn, a collector of historical oddities, presides over a gallery full of the most dangerous artefacts - and people - of the galactic past. Orikan, a chronomancer without peer, draws zodiacs that predict and manipulate the future.

Publisher's Summary
A Warhammer Horror audio drama.
On a world cut off from the Imperium, towering spires are lashed by endless rain. As citizens flee from the drowning city, a sadistic Imperial interrogator seeks a lowly data-drone with a terrible secret. But when disaster strikes, the pair must rely on each other for survival as the Watcher in the Rain awaits them.
Listen to it because: Hear a world in peril, with a magnificent soundscape acting as the backdrop to a thoroughly frightening tale of two enemies forced to work together against a darkness that will consume them both.
The story: In the far reaches of Imperial space, a ferocious warp storm approaches an Administratum world, cutting off the entire planet from the rest of the Imperium. As their towering grey spires are punished by endless rain, countless administrators, tithe-masters, and book-keepers are forced to evacuate. Among them is Greta, a lowly data-drone with a terrible secret, wanted for questioning by the sadistic Imperial interrogator Stefan Crucius. As disaster strikes and the pair are left stranded in the depths of the drowning city, captor and captive must cooperate to stand any chance of escaping. But a mysterious presence stalks them through the abandoned, flooded towers, a dread entity each must confront but which neither dare acknowledge, a Watcher in the Rain.

This is proper horror!
I feel I just had to write a review on this little gem of an audio drama. The story, the voice acting, the effects. All excellent. What I admired most was how tight it all was, nothing unnecessary but still didn't feel like anything was missing out. It also had many elements very specific to the Warhammer 40.000 universe, so in other words the story couldn't easily if at all exists in any other setting. Very depressing story though so if you can't stomach those, then look elsewhere.

All good except for the very end
There were lots of layers in this, which was surprising for something 74 minutes long. Good performances and ambiance.
The very very end was bad. It felt moralistic, like there was some sort of "cummumpance" that had to happen. It didn't, and took away from an otherwise enjoyable story.

The Black Library horror selections are really very good.
This particular work has multiple different turns in the story which ALL pay off.
I am not a fan of audio dramas so much, but the voice acting was well done and well edited.

A well-written yarn with an excellent twist!
A terrific story filled with dark, oppressive ambiance.
It had the sort of classic, dark, creeping horror of Lovecraft, Poe, Serling or Hitchcock, where even if you see the twist coming its evolution keeps you (the reader) happily engrossed.
The voice actors are superb too (as usual)!
Highly recommended!

Outstanding! Truly.
Very much enjoyed this one. Not overly long with detail(s) which aren't necessary nor scenes dragging on. And not too short either. Difficult to say details at all about the story itself due to possible spoilers. So I will not. Be sure to keep your ears and attention to the story. (; Very cool. Truthfully, better than some straight up action 40k novels I've read.

A true cause of nightmares
Warhammer Horror: The Watcher In The Rain by Alec Worley
Hello again to one and all! Those of you who read my reviews on a regular basis will be aware that I’ve been somewhat missing in action for the last while. I wish I could say I had planned this and there will be a Halloween deluge however that is not the case. I am fine and I will review or discuss what I can when I’m able however my appearances will be more sporadic in nature than I initially hoped mostly due to my mindset. As you will all know this time of year is the spooky season usually full of ghosts, vampires, dullahan and other similar creatures and I do intend to visit some spookiness upon my corner of this website. However…how do I begin? With the Watcher In The Rain? A certain Doctor Frankenstein? Or…something more of a potluck?
The Watcher In The Rain by Alec Worley – writer of Dredge Runners which I praised to the moon and back recently – is an audio drama part of the Warhammer Horror range. Warhammer Horror is also reasonably new having been newly formed during last year’s October and November period with sporadic releases ever since. Some of the releases currently available under the name Warhammer Horror are in fact rereleases of classic Warhammer stories from the late 1980s by Anno Dracula author Kim Newman whilst others such as Watcher and The Colonel’s Monograph by Graham McNeil are new stories designed solely with the purpose of sending chills down the reader or listener’s spine. But I think it’s time I discuss the plot.
The plot is as follows: Our tale is on a world of the Administratum, cut off from the remainder of the Imperium by an enormous warp storm. The citizens of this world are all attempting to flee before their world is eaten by the storm. Among the tithe collectors, archivists and endless streams of bureaucrats our story focuses on two such individuals as they are deluged by the world’s rain. On one side we have Stefan Crucius, an…unpleasant Imperial Interrogator searching for answers to his questions. On the other hand we have Greta a mere data menial but one who is not all she seems. Due to circumstances beyond their control the two are forced to work together in an attempt to escape their doomed world. However they are not alone. The Watcher In The Rain is always waiting.
The Watcher In The Rain is…disturbing. The horror throughout the seventy-five minute tale is a creeping and growing sense of never ending dread. The storyline makes you as the listener share the character’s senses that something is as it should not be. That something undefinable is filling you with your own personal horror.
The characters are all excellently portrayed ranging from Crucius and Greta to an incredibly blunt soldier type trying to get on with his job…as unpleasantly as possible no doubt and a small selection of other side characters I can’t exactly give away. Between the wonderful portrayals, Worley’s unsettlingly good storytelling – the man can do horror just as well as he can comedy – and the perfect sound effects which I feel I MUST mention in this review due to the fact that they add so much to the atmosphere of the story this story genuinely got to me on first listen and utterly terrified me. That’s quite the endorsement when you are trying to write horror. Matthew Hunt as Crucius and Deeivya Meir as Greta are brilliantly cast and I hope to hear from them both again some day in other Warhammer audio drama releases.
I will however in brief mention a few potential negatives. Firstly the final reveal although very well done does feel like it goes on just a little too long for my taste. Secondly if horror as a genre is not to your taste? Stay FAR AWAY from this one. I am somewhat of an oddball when it comes to horror as I frankly love all things freaky, depraved and unnatural in my entertainment however I cannot stand much visual horror or what would nowadays be termed jump scares. As such despite being something of a horror weakling I LOVED Watcher In The Rain but it is not for the fainthearted. Know that going in!
I’m being somewhat intentionally vague in my return to article writing as I don’t want to give away that which awaits those who join me on this doomed world. I have been waiting for almost a year to discuss this nightmarish tale and I hope should you listen that it won’t give you nightmares. However the Watcher is not my only tale this year.
Next time you hear from me it shall be to discuss a classic. Not a certain vampire but something made famous many moons ago by Mr Karloff. I know I can be prone to…foolish promises…but this is one I must keep.

Decent if not predictable
Fun story, well acted and the sound design was amazing. Not very surprising and a bit cliché but fine for a quick listen.

well performed
a little stilted sometimes (people talking to themselves to explain to the reader what's happening), but some really cool moments as well.

Gripping thriller well executed!!
I haven't listened to an audio book in a few years and needless to say i'm very impressed by the overall audio production. Voice acting is very convincing and evokes great emotional responses. The little bits of foley and atmospheric music really brings a lot of tension to the plot. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this and felt like I went to the cinemas as it all played out like a movie in my head. Very much unlike the rudimentary space marine novels that most Warhammer 40k tend to be and definitely worth the time!

Spooky look into horror in 40k
The watcher in the rain is a haunting look into how twisted the imperium can be for everyone.
Sound was excellent and the story was good. I wouldn’t mind listening to another like this.
