Publisher's Summary

Having lost the prince to the madness of The Blessing, Tejohn and Cazia are the only people who know of his plan to retrieve a secret spell that might - just might - turn the tide of battle against the grunts.

But Tejohn's body is broken, and Cazia has been stripped of her magic. Worse, both are being held captive: Tejohn faces charges of treason in the lands where he was born. On the other side of the continent, Cazia is a prisoner of the Tilkilit queen, a creature with a desperate, deadly plan.

While they struggle for their freedom, The Blessing continues to spread across Kal-Maddum, their numbers growing more numerous as the human population shrinks. What had started as a race to restore an empire has quickly become a mission to save humanity from extinction.

Harry Connolly's first book, Child of Fire, was listed in Publishers Weekly's Best 100 Books of 2009.

Great reading, great plot, great characters!

Any additional comments?

This is the second book of The Great Way trilogy. If you haven't read book 1, The Way into Chaos, read/listen to it first. That said, this is a great middle book for the series, the characters change and grow, you learn new things about the world and plenty of unexpected things happen, the plot is really full of surprises. The performance is top notch, Kramer gets every nuance of the text and gives a strikingly individual voice to each character. This is a lively and interesting book, I highly recommend it!

Obviously one book split into three

This is not a story in itself. It is the middle of a book. Poor splitting on the publisher, i assume.

I listened in two sittings it was so captivating.

This was a great and captivating book. It took two sittings to finish. Still not fond of stopping a story just when things are heating up but now I wait for the third book with much anticipation. Narration was great as always with Michael Kramer. I think the story is up there with some of the greats I have read of the years. Much like a Sanderson tale but with less plots to remember. Not sure how to explain it fully.
I recommend this book to any fantasy readers.
Good work....

Another great book

This is a great continuing story. Action packed-you never know what disaster is about to happen. Of course, the narration is amazing!

Incomplete Story lines

I like this series but unless you expect to take 3 books at once, be prepared for cliffhanger endings.

This should be one big book since this author does not resolve any issues before ending the books.

Too short!

The world and characters are great. They realy should be making some guesses and trying experiments by now. The waiting for them to start i ad getting frustrating. This book was just starting to get good when it ended.

More filler than the first but good book!

This is the 2nd book in the series and I enjoyed almost as much as the first book. I love that the characters have flaws and real emotions, there are no Mary Sue's or farm boys who are war gods the first time they touch a blade. My biggest complaint is that not much happened except the main characters traveling. Some big truths were discovered but this could have been streamlined. Cut the filler in half and combine with next book. The narration is great. Will definitely read next one.

Two novellas intertwined---what about a full book?

Where does The Way into Magic rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Above average, not sure about a particular number to stick on it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Way into Magic?

There are several memorable moments. My favorite was a tragic scene with infected farmers and soldiers.

Which character – as performed by Michael Kramer – was your favorite?

Tejohn. I think Michael Kramer does the best voices for grizzled military veterans.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Man-bears

Any additional comments?

This is a fine story, albeit short (compared with its predecessor). Because there is a sneak peek at the next book in the series the audiobook is even shorter than listed. Listed time is about 9.5 hours but it actually ends at about 8.5 hours. The first book ends at about 15 hrs. While the first book ends with a life or death cliffhanger for all parties involved, this book ends with a minor cliffhanger for one character. It really feels like the story was about half-way finished when it ended. I don't understand why the author didn't switch the point of view for another half hour or so and give the reader cliffhangers for both parties.

The story has all the good stuff from the first book (man-bears, magical creatures, compelling characters, etc.). Cazia and Tejohn fight against the grunts (man-bears) in their own ways, but their stories do not overlap a single time. It reads like two separate four-hour long novellas.

Unfortunately, unless you are a big fan of the first book, I do not recommend spending a credit on this unless you have an excess of credits. I started listening to the third book and if you skip from the first to the third you don't feel like you are missing much. To me, this is a clear indication that, while fun to listen to, book two isn't necessary or complete, mostly just a resolution of the cliffhangers from the first book.

I love the writing but wish I got more than half a book.
