Story
A classic of modern travel writing, An Area of Darkness is Nobel Laureate V. S. Naipaul’s profound reckoning with his ancestral homeland and an extraordinarily perceptive chronicle of his first encounter with India. Traveling from the bureaucratic morass of Bombay to the ethereal beauty of Kashmir, from a sacred ice cave in the Himalayas to an abandoned temple near Madras, Naipaul encounters a dizzying cross-section of humanity: browbeaten government workers and imperious servants, a suavely self-serving holy man, and a deluded American religious seeker.

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few. So begins this most beloved of all American Zen works. Seldom has such a small handful of words provided a teaching as rich as this famous opening line of Shunryu Suzuki's classic. In a single stroke, the simple sentence cuts through the pervasive tendency students have of getting so close to Zen as to completely miss what it's all about. An instant teaching in the first minutes. And that's just the beginning.

In 1935 a young Englishman named Laurie Lee arrived in Spain. He had never been overseas. His idea was to walk through the country, earning money for food by playing his violin in bars and plazas. Nearly a century later, the book Laurie Lee wrote - As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning - inspired Alastair Humphreys. It made him fall in love with Spain - the landscapes and the spirit - and with Laurie's style of travel. Alastair dreamed of retracing Laurie Lee’s footsteps but could never get past the hurdle of being distinctly unmusical. This year, he decided to go anyway.

Story
In this groundbreaking audiobook, neuropsychology professor Chris Niebauer explains how after decades of research on the brain, Western science may have inadvertently confirmed a fundamental tenet of Buddhism: anatta, or the doctrine of "no self". Niebauer shows how findings in neuropsychology suggest that our sense of self is actually an illusion created by the left side of the brain and that it exists in the same way a mirage in the middle of the desert exists: as a thought rather than a thing.

Story
August 1942. Jacob and Moses Stein, two young Jewish brothers, are staying with their aunt in Paris amid the Nazi occupation. The boys’ parents, well-known German playwrights, have left the brothers in their aunt’s care until they can find safe harbor for their family. But before the Steins can reunite, a great and terrifying roundup occurs. The French gendarmes, under Nazi order, arrest the boys and take them to the Vélodrome d’Hiver - a massive, bleak structure in Paris where thousands of France’s Jews are being forcibly detained.

Publisher's Summary
Share in a joyful, enlightening journey!
In everyone's life, there's one journey that stands out...the one in which you discover yourself and your mission in life. Join Leo Buscaglia on his journey of a lifetime! Leo's destination: the Orient and beyond. Leo's mission: discovery of self. Rediscovery and verification of the ancient truths. And a search for beauty, friendship, and understanding.
With his lifelong and seasoned traveling partners - curiosity, compassion, and love - Leo embarks on what is destined to become a lengthy, wondrous, and sometimes arduous journey in The Way of the Bull: A Personal Search of Self-Fulfillment. Accept his heartfelt invitation to become his newest traveling companion. You will learn:
- The only thing that is certain for us is change. To battle change is waster of our time; the battle can never be won. To become the willing ally of change is to assure oneself a life.
- Don't spend your precious time asking, "Why isn't the world a better place"? It will only be time wasted. The question to ask is, "How can I make it better?" To that question, there is an answer.
- In the Inn of the World, there is room for everyone. To turn your back on even one person, for whatever reason, is to run the risk of losing the central piece of your jigsaw puzzle.
Of all his programs, Leo says, "This is the work I would like to be remembered for. Along the way I read many books. Experienced wondrous things. And met beautiful people in exotic lands. Each served to expand my mind, my visions, and my heart. I now know that we need ever go anywhere to find ourselves, for everything we need can be found anywhere if we are ready for it."
These six powerful audio programs are a stirring story of Leo's travels from Japan and Hong Kong to Cambodia and Calcutta on his personal quest for discovery, searching for the bull - the Chinese symbol of life - that lies within himself and all of us, the bull that must remain untethered and free to explore.

Misused Effects and Horrible Accents
This book, helped me as a young man to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the world and its people. As a young sailor I read the book over and over to help me see the bigger world and it’s people as I traveled and later lived over seas. This book was so dear to me that I often gave it as a gift to my young sailors as they embarked in life.
That having been said; this audible book is totally distracting from and demeaning to the message of Dr. Buscaglia. It comes off as a cheap travelogue and the music and sound effects distract from the narrative. Add to this the horribly racist accents given to the people met, and you get the sense that the producers wanted to present a cartoon version of them. I would strongly recommend a complete re-do of this powerful book and for goodness sakes take out the sales pitches.
