Story
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Thrive or die: That's the rule of evolution. Despite this brutal logic, some species have learned to survive in even the most hostile conditions. Others couldn't - and perished. While incremental genetic adaptations hone the physiology of nearly every creature on this planet, there's another evolutionary force that is just as important: the power of choice. In this explosive investigation into the limits of endurance, journalist Scott Carney discovers how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology.

Imagine a breathing technique that can increase oxygen uptake and delivery to the cells, improve blood circulation, and unblock the nose. Perhaps it can help open the airways of the lungs, enhance blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain, improve sleep, and bring calmness to the mind. It might even restore bodily functions disturbed by stress, build greater resilience, and help you to live longer. You might think this description sounds farfetched. But it isn’t.

Publisher's Summary
Science has now proved the legendary Wim Hof method of breath control and cold training can dramatically enhance energy levels, improve circulation, reduce stress, boost the immune system, strengthen the body, and successfully combat many diseases. While Wim Hof himself has run marathons in -30 degress Celsius in shorts, swum hundreds of meters under the ice, sat in a tank of ice for 90 minutes without his core temperature changing, and boosted his metabolism by more than 300 percent, The Way of the Iceman documents how anyone can use Wim’s methods to transform his or her health and strength quickly and safely.
“After teaching specialized breathing techniques to SEALs for years, helping them focus, stay warm in the cold ocean and get centered in combat, I can attest to the authenticity and power of Wim Hof's methods. Wim Hof is providing a great service with his new book The Way of The Iceman by bringing breath training and simple, powerful health practices into mainstream consciousness.” (Mark Divine, US Navy SEAL (ret), founder of SEALFIT, best-selling author of Unbeatable Mind and Way of the SEAL)
Critic Reviews
"I am continuously searching for ways to expand my mind, body and spirit - Wim Hof and The Way of the Iceman have done just that! He shows us that human potential is limitless and we are ALL capable of anything we set our minds to.” (Lewis Howes, New York Times best-selling author of The School of Greatness)
“What fascinates me most about Wim Hof's method is the potential application for athletes.... [T]he science in this book shows that we can all amplify our recovery, maximize our pain tolerance, massively jack up energy levels and even learn to control inflammation...and it can be done without resorting to toxic drugs. In fact, the system outlined in this manual might just be the key to producing a generation of enhanced but drug-free athletes.” (Paul “Coach” Wade, author of Convict Conditioning)

More of an ad then a book
I am very interested in exploring the Wim Hof method so I didn’t need to be sold on it. This read is mostly testimonials and the origin of the method. They give you one starter exercise at the very end. I am going to try the exercise and take a few classes. If you are interested and short on time, I would jump right into the classes. No need to sell me something I am actively researching and looking to try.

Only 2 mins of the whole book is actually useful
Let me begin by saying how much Wim Hof is an absolute legend and high performance human. This book gives you a good insight of his character, achievements, and what led him to create this style of high performance mind control.
The stories in this book are inspirational, but what really lets it down is the very small amount of teaching on the actual methodology for Wim Hof technique. It spends a very small chapter telling you how to breathe slowly for 30 breaths then hold your breath on the last breath. It does not go into any more detail, such as how many times a day do you need to practice this for? How many weeks? The psychology behind what you may experience during the course of your breathing exercises.
I feel you can only get that type of teaching from Wim himself.
There are plenty of other audio books out there that go into more detail than this, which also give you a deeper understanding of the technique.
This is definitely worth a listen, but don’t expect to be taught anything super human, or feel like you have a real blue print to run a marathon, topless and in sandals across the arctic circle.

Interesting introduction but poorly performed
The content of the book is interesting enough: it goes into plenty of detail about the technique and some benefits. However, for the most part it feels like blatant marketing for Wim Hof's seminars, and this is felt throughout.
The performance was also bad. There are some sections which clearly should have been edited out, and for the most part a lifeless reader.

I had heard about Wim Hof from my 23 year old son, however, before he told me about him he had me do a test.
How long could I hold my breath, I tried, I had just over 30 seconds. He asked me to do a breathing exercise and at the end exhale before holding my breath. I held my breath for 90 seconds and I was very relaxed and comfortable.
That Dad, is the Wim Hof technique. Read this book with an open mind, it doesn't offer an miracle cures, just some basic advice that could transform your life. I listened to the book because I wanted to see if it was suitable to give a friend an overview of the technique.
If you doubt any of the "news stories", just do a bit of online research from credible sources.

Let down by the narration
Unfortunately, not a good delivery of the great work of Wim Hof. Contains all the information I hoped for but very tedious to listen to. I'm sure the narrator does not need say "quote, unquote" so often, and definitely does not need to quote unquote his own conversation.
The audio book has no chapters or display of progress and I couldn't bookmark or clip any points of reference. Of course, I could always buy the physical book I suppose.

Waste of time
I’d like to meet Wim and do his course but this book is 4 minutes of content and 3 hours of speculation

book is a bit short but enjoyable and fascinating
Everyone should learn these techniques and practice for longevity, stress relief and increased energy. The book couldve been longer but it was concise and informative.
