Publisher's Summary

He was still a young man, but he'd used that handful of years effectively, building a bad reputation that spanned the West, his villainy taking different forms everywhere it took roost. Denver knew him as the Doctor; Texans called him Montana; and folks in Idaho called him Texas. On account of his youth, most everywhere else called him the Lonesome Kid.

But when he finally gets arrested for vagrancy, he tells the sheriff his name is Alfred Lamb. Will that identity stick when he tries to help a rancher battle off a pack of cattle rustlers?

With a lengthy career in pulps, comics, and early cinema, and with over 200 full-length Western novels to his credit, including Destry Rides Again and Montana Rides and the iconic Dr. Kildare series, Max Brand's action-filled stories of adventure and heroism in the American West continue to entertain audiences throughout the world.

Good Classic style western

This book has a great narrator, classic style story line and was great to listen to while driving to and from work. The best part is that it was free with my audible membership.

A Most Excellent Western!!!

Just for the heck of it I thought I would give the sample a listen. Sure glad, the story kept me the whole time and hated that I had to stop until the next day and now it is done. Wishing it was longer and wanting more. The best Western I can remember!!!

Terrific thanks

The first review I’ve written. The reader stayed out of the way of the story, and the characters were easily identified and followed. Depth of the characters brings the entire picture to life. Bad guys and good are quite complex. Fun listen

Zane Grey Doesn’t Disappoint but…

The title is a bit misleading. This is a story about a cleaver young man, not so much about the horse.
I truly enjoyed most of the book due to the details Zane gives us rather than the story. But being a women, I don’t believe the story was written for me.
I recommend this book to adults only because of the violence which isn’t harsh, but quite constant. Also Zane seems to be fixated on his hero’s being tall/big, mostly handsome, cleaver, rich and unusually talented. I think younger readers could begin to believe that those qualities are what it takes to be a worthwhile man, rather than what’s inside of the person. But if you should find your child reading this book, I wouldn’t worry, I would just remind them that good men don’t have to be heroes who end up rich!

Tigers could cut their teeth on you, Kid!

Alfred Percy Lamb was the handle he gave the sheriff. By the time he left the sheriff’s office, he had made a deal to go to work for Colonel Loring. Lamb’s type of work was not punching cattle or riding herd but slinging lead with either of his Colts. The Loring ranch was in financial trouble, losing cattle to the Montague ranch at an alarming rate. Romeo and Juliet, Montagues and Caplets, any connection? Monty, the grandfather, and grandson Jimmy were owners of the Montague ranch. Lamb signed on with Loring to keep the Montagues at bay. The story continues on this path. It appears that Lamb, or The Kid, had other motives for his presence in this feud but it’ll be a while before you figure that out. The cowboy verbiage, idioms, and descriptions were outstanding. I was truly amazed and impressed. It was like listening to poetry. This is one of the finest westerns I’ve listened to in many years. Reading through the Louis L’Amour novels may be the only competition.

Very good until the end

I thoroughly enjoyed this book however I feel the lead up was more enthralling than the conclusion. Thats not to say then ending was bad, it just wasn't as epic as I thought it might be. Well worth a listen or read.
