Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Winter War, then pay attention....

In December 1940, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill made a speech about a conflict that had some leading figures in Britain and France, including Churchill himself, briefly discussing the idea of going to war with the Soviet Union, even though they were already fighting Adolf Hitler.

Of course, war makes strange bedfellows, and one year later, Churchill would find himself allied with the Soviet Union against Germany and Finland. It’s an interesting saga, one with roots in imperial Russian history and the desire of the Finns to be free in their northern forests.

In The Winter War: A Captivating Guide to the Russo-Finnish War between Finland and the Soviet Union, you will discover topics such as

  • The Grand Duchy of Finland
  • The Finnish Civil War
  • Between a rock and a hard place
  • The Red Menace
  • Negotiations, “refresher training,” and the balance of forces
  • The Greatest Finn of all time
  • Hell in the snow
  • And much, much more!

Excellent!

A brilliant accounting of this little known war within a war, pitting a tiny country against a behemoth. The battles are brutal, the weather is brutal. Trotter describes it all magnificently. A must-listen for any WWII history buff. And a must-listen for anyone willing to serve their country, whatever country.

Excellent Listen

A Terrific audible on a very little known conflict, the bravery of the Finns, their cunning and resourcefulness in the face of overwhelming odds is well documented.

Great audible

This audible was recommended to me by a military historian when he found out that my son was marrying a young woman from Finland. I don't usually listen to military history, but I wanted to find out about my daughter-in-law's country.

A thoroughly entertaining

I like some of the other listeners, couldn't put the audible down. I listened to it in a couple of days, as much as spare time would allow. I am a military history buff and hadn't explored this area of history, so when I came across this audible, I ordered it on the spot.

Easy listen

The author provides a gripping and fast-paced recount of the Winter War and touches on the Continuation War. He presents a very balanced (perhaps a bit too kind to the Soviet's perspective) and an in-depth history of one of the most amazing military feats in history!

I devoured this audible...

There's nothing quite like this story. This is exactly what this audible is. Although the author gives a fair point of view from the Russian side, he writes of the Finns' battles and bravery with great eloquence.

Outstanding effort!

This audible has been much better than I expected as far as detailing the Winter War. I have listened to other audibles that were far less detailed and far more difficult to understand.

Hot War ...

I found the audible to be an easy, engaging listen, which is a relative rarity for a serious military history audible. There are other fine works out there on the Russo-Finnish Winter War, but if you can have only one, buy this audible. Highly recommended.

Very surprising

The only book I’ve found on this war and really informative. It’s a great listen, though is quite biased towards Finland.

The account was excellent

The writer could have given more personal achievements of individual soldiers, more writings of the heroics that many soldiers performed. There were some, but not nearly enough.

I really love this

I really love the mini-wars within WW2, it shows an exciting side of history you are different from unless you are from the range they are talking on.

Gripping and informative

I would have loved to see more evidence in the plans to show troop changes for the various actions. Also, if you're not a Finnish speaker, it is simple to get involved with place names, some of which are not easily discernable on the plans in the book.

A very detailed history

So if you are a die-hard war buff that requires to know about courage, strength, and sheer stupidity, explain this book. This book makes you wonder what would have happened in WW2 if the Russians had not invaded Finland.

Definitely recommended

This audiobook should be understood by anyone interested in Finland. You cannot know the country without knowing what happened to it during the Second World War. This audiobook is interesting and very enjoyable. I suggest it enthusiastically.
