There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Excellent fantasy but.....
Here's the thing. And bare with me -- this is excellent fantasy. I love the mythology, the story, the characters. I love the narrator and the audible nature of this book.
But I was surprised --in fact completely surprised -- by the torture/rape scene in this novel. In fact, it is so explicit, so ultimately demoralizing that it is almost beyond belief, Look, this is a good fantasy series but I question the author's judgment in essentially raping a juvenile (yes hello -that is rape of a child) and then torturing her in a scene to create some drama.
Frankly I believe I will be asking for my money back on this book after stewing on that scene for a few weeks. It makes me wonder what kind of author writes that type of scene and makes me wonder why audible doesn't screen this just a tiny bit.
Look i get it --its a fantasy series, its well-written, . But c'mon -- to torture a little girl with rape and pain ... I dunno. Yes I will ask for a return on this novel. Even if I wanted to see where the story went (with her poor broken hand for months afterward).
Maybe we should consider that rape of a child and torture isn't something we should accept in novels no matter how well-written. Maybe we shouldn't put our credits to that type of book. And BTW I am an attorney and that was rape of a child in almost any jurisdiction I know.
So if you want good fantasy here it is. But you also get other stuff as well. Refund request incoming.

A Great Series
I have read the paperback version of this book more times than I can count and I have loved this series since I first discovered it. I was so excited to see it is finally coming out on audible. The narrator did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life and speaking in a clear voice. Although the accent is heavy, it is easily understood and really brings the characters different personalities to life. The voices used make it extremely easy to differentiate between each character. I highly recommend this book. If you love a story of magic and sci fi filled with great accents and a gripping story then this series is for you.

Waited a long time for this series
I stumbled across this book in my campus bookstore when it was new and read the series several times over the years. I’ve waited and searched for this to be released on an audio version for years.
I knew the most important choice for this book would be the narrator. The accent would be critical.
Elle Newlands was a new narrator to me and did not disappoint!
I’m so happy to finally have this on Audible ❤️

So Good
This book was so good I binged it in two days. Great story and start to a series. I had been in the biggest book slump I can remember before finding this book. Great fantasy story for those who like fantasy but can’t get into high fantasy novels. I can’t recommend the book enough. I have been a fan of Kate Forsyth since discovering her book Bitter Greens. Her books are full of imagination and great writing. She is indeed a story teller. I’m very happy that this is a series and have already purchased all the books.

Irritating to listen to
I can't handle the constant accent of the reader and the fact that what constitutes a new voice for a different character is slight variations on how hard the accent is.. listened to maybe 4+ hours I don't recall exactly how much I made it through but I can not finish this I just get so put off by the performance

First book in a series
And because it is, don’t expect a resolution of any kind. This is just a scene setter. That’s alright as a concept but makes for a pretty unsatisfying read. I don’t know if I’ll read the next yet. I can’t be bothered to wait until book 6 to find out what happens to someone I’ve forgotten about because they haven’t appeared since book 4.

Juvenile
I’m sorry to say that I bought this book based upon the audible recommendations, and I could not have been more disappointed.
Although the accent of the narrator is charming, the strange intonation and punctuation severely detracted from the story, I do not know if this is a result of the way the book is written, or the narrator’s interpretation.
However, the actual book is very juvenile, with sloppy writing, endless statements of the obvious, and awkward sentence structures.
If you really enjoy good quality fantasy writing, do not buy this book, I did not finish it in the end, and I deleted it from my collection.
I would not recommend it.

Awesome read
This is one of my all time favourite series, I read them so long ago that I don't remember much that happened. So they have been on my reread list for a while now. I was so excited to see them come out as an audiobook but a bit worried about how it would read. It was even better then I could have hoped and I loved revisiting this world. Definitely will be buying all six books if/when they become available.

Satisfying to have so many clever, talented, sassy women - as protagonists and antagonists.

Wonderful series
I love this series and the growth of the main characters. It took a while to get used to the language and the sometimes odd cadence of the narrator, but I also find it calming. It has become a bit of a comfort series when I want to re-listen to something in the background. I'm sure I will listen to it many more times

One of my all time favourites.
so good to hear everything pronounced in a Scottish accent as intended by the author, my Australian brain doesn't read them the same so it was great to hear.
this series is phenomenal and I highly recommend for any fantasy lover.

Excellent!
Elle Newlands does a fantastic job of immersing you in the world of Eileanan with her performance of this incredibly riveting and well-written book. I first read this series in my mid teens about 15 years ago and I couldn't put it down. Of course, I now can't stop listening either! S tier book and performance.

Good
Quite an enjoyable experience.
Very nicely read, giving a vivid portrayal of a fairly twisted story.

Loved it :)
I loved this audiobook. The story was well written and entertaining, and the narrator read it really well too. I highly recommend this book
