Publisher's Summary
Welcome to Spellford Cove, where the baking is sweet and the witches are wild.
Robin Carter's life is less than stellar. All she has going for her are a minimum-wage job she hates, an uncanny ability to attract the biggest losers on her dating app, and a raccoon sitting in her kitchen sink eating her chips. So, when she finds out she's inherited a bakery in a small Washington town, Robin thinks this might just be the fresh start she desperately needs. Upon her arrival, however, Robin finds out she's inherited more than just a small business: she's also got her mother's magical powers.
However, things start going south for Robin when a man dies at the local diner just after her arrival in town and she's fingered as the prime suspect. With half the town thinking she's a killer, Robin decides to take matters into her own hands. But between a ghost who desperately needs therapy, a snarky familiar who loves to quote literature, and a grandmother who walks to the beat of her own drum, Robin really has her hands full.
Will she be able to navigate this new reality and find the killer, or will she crumble like an overcooked brownie?
This is the first book in the Spellford Cove paranormal cozy mystery series.

Cosy story. Narration was okay. I liked the voice she give to the characters. Except for the cat. I think I would have like something a little higher pitched. Still she made the story interesting. A fun story.

I Disagree
When I read the reviews about mispronounced words, shallow plot lines, underdeveloped characters, yadda yadda yadda, I almost passed on this little book. Then I listened to the sample narrative and read the publisher's sales pitch. It sounded light and funny. I was right. If you are looking for literature, see your friendly librarian, this is light, rocking chair fiction meant to be fun, not deep. Give it a try, you'll be delightfully surprised and wish for...sure, more fully developed characters, but I will try the next little book for the next layers of the sweet treat, myself.

Annoying main character
I really tried to like this book. Unfortunately, the main character was just way too annoying for me. I couldn't finish the book. Half of the book was spent on her whining about how high she must be and not believing she's a witch. Maybe the second book is better, but this first one if a no from me.

Series Review
This is a fun series. It's not particularly inspired, but it's fun and I found myself rooting for the protagonist. The narrator carries the books through rough spots that speak of inadequate editing. That makes these a good choice for audio. If you are particularly annoyed by continuity errors (between books and even within books) or characters with an impossible amount of life experience and knowledge given their ages, then these books aren't a good choice for you. Otherwise, I can recommend them. They read like they were written by a librarian.

Loved it
Samantha Silver has crafted a great first installment in the Spellford Cove Mystery series. The storyline takes a hold of you in the beginning and never lets loose. The characters are those who seem more like friends instead of characters. Jill Smith gave an excellent performance as she brought the storyline to life, and gave distinct voices to each character. I look forward to the next in series. I highly recommend this book/audiobook to cozy mystery fans.

Breakneck Pacing through Cozy Cliches
This is my first story I've listened to from Samantha Silver and I was left feeling pretty underwhelmed. This story is really trying to tick all the supernatural cozy mystery themes: protagonist arrives to a new small town, suddenly discovers she is magic, gets to own a bakery, murder occurs shortly after her arrival where she is a suspect and has to find the real killer to clear her name, romantic interest with some banter, the protagonists willingness to throw herself in to danger constantly for no apparent reason. The pacing on this is very fast, racing from element to element without really allowing for much development. Granted often these first volumes in the series are just giving you a small taste and set up for much larger story arcs to come (enter mysterious and slightly threatening character near the end of the tale that says cryptic things without any resolution or the discussion of other major crimes that have never been solved and are discussed and still not resolved). The romance with the characters feels pretty forced as does their dialogue. I was so confused why so much time is being spent on an argument between the two about work/life balance only for it to be used as the catalyst for a metaphorical a-ha moment for our protagonist. The use of magic is interesting and would love to see more, the familiar in the story is fun and seems to be there to supply sarcasm. The cast is filled with quirky townsfolk and newly discovered family members that are definite characters. Though there was a particularly odd moment with the protagonist's cousin discussing her use of magic to get back at a bully that felt not funny at all and honestly pretty sadistic. But as for the protagonist's risky decisions since so little time was spent developing motivation the jumps to massively dangerous action don't feel earned. Yes there is always a suspension of belief in a cozy mystery but when there seems to be no attempt to convince the audience why running solo into lethal situations would be remotely necessary I found myself being more annoyed with the protagonist then rooting for her. The jump she makes to I will go investigate this murder on my own does not feel anywhere near the first option especially when there is literally no evidence whatsoever brought against the protagonist, and even suggesting the police are lazy does not mean someone could be convicted of murder with literally no evidence other than you were one of many people at the place where this person died. Literally the protagonist only needed to call a lawyer and this would have been solved. I will say Jill Smith did a wonderful job with the narration and I would not hesitate to listen to her narration again. As for Spellford Cove I am willing to give volume two a chance because I am a sucker for this trope and some of the world being developed here shows promise but hope it will be a little more polished and fleshed out.
