Publisher's Summary

“I’m leaving.” Two shocking words, torching a marriage of over 20 years. Totally blindsided, Shannon, a middle-aged stay-at-home mom, is traded in for a newer model.

One of the few possessions her cheating ex didn’t swipe was the mountain resort she inherited from her dear Aunt Maeve. With limited funds and bleak job prospects, the decrepit resort is a lifeline!

But what’s with the water in the small town in the Catskill Mountains? Every guy she meets looks like he stepped off the cover of GQ magazine. She’s had it with men! Or maybe not....

Shannon discovers a wishing well in her forest and learns that magic is real. So are witches and their spells. Her aunt Maeve was a witch, and now it’s Shannon’s turn.

This discovery catapults her from the mundane. She’s no longer a Spanx-wearing soccer mom fighting traffic and a midlife spare tire. Who has time for bitterness when there’s a world of magical witchcraft to learn?

But the learning curve is steep. Spells go off the rails. Who knew she’d turn her best friend into a sex addict? Or that getting revenge on her ex would boomerang back to bite her in the ass? She’s learning. Give her a break, okay?

Meanwhile, a handsome developer with designs on using her land to create a million-dollar subdivision has his eye on her enchanted resort.

As if her personal tropical moments, a muffin top, and a bad back aren’t challenging enough, she has to deal with his tricks to sink her. Why does he want her property so bad? Can’t he find someplace else to pillage?

Shannon is going to need all the magic that the little wishing well showers on her and then some.

Witching Well, Book One of the Hex After 40 series, is a story of a woman thrown into the deep end who surfaces, claiming her power. Midlife, divorce, and trying to stay sane to be a good mother aren’t the end. There’s magic, heartwarming friendship, and maybe even love in this roller coaster ride of life’s next stage.

What a fun listen!

In the past few weeks I've been catching up on listening when I came across this book. Wanting something light I started this and just got taken in by the story. All of the characters are the type of people you want to be friends with and the plot is quite cute. There are at least two more books in the series - and I definitely plan on listening to them.

Jennifer Pickens is one of my favourite narrators and does another wonderful job on this book.

Jennifer Pickens was a really good narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A fun and magical story about the blessings - and curse - of wishes coming true

After her husband walked out on her to be with someone else, Shannon moves out into the Catskills to move into her late aunt’s house. She discovers a witching well, as well as the fact that her wishes seem to be coming true - but that the universe has a way to balance itself out again, throwing all sorts of trouble at her. Meanwhile, she is able to reconnect with her friends MJ and Libby and realizes that this is home.

I really enjoyed the story immensely and binged my way through it. The writing is refreshing and fun, and Jennifer Pickens’ narration fits very very well and serves the occasional dry humor perfectly :)

Highly recommended!

Great book!

I can't wait to get into the next one! I'll be honest (never had much success at dishonesty 🙄), I love paranormal but wasn't sure I would like one geared to women. But I am sure glad I stepped up and tried it. There was not a lot of deep erotic hard (🤫) core episodes but it did get a little racy on occasion. All in all, I think you will love it!

Jennifer did a great job with narration. I am always amazed at how someone can change an inflection, timbre or countless other things to make each voice distinct. Great job for both!!!

Wow!! What a Ride!

I was not to sure about this book, but decided to give it a shot. Sooooo Glad I did, I just loved the story and the witchyness of it. As the blub states the MC is recently divorced and with nothing to do but go the property she inherited from her Aunt. Live in the Catskill Mtns is Beautiful and she remembers all the summers spent there. Narrator did a lovely job with the characters voices and of course with the storyline. Highly Recommended if you want some supernatural Fun.

Hilarious Read

This was a new author and narrator to me! I listed to the audio and loved it! The narrator did a great job of bringing the characters to life!

The characters are hilarious! I love what Shannon refers to her ex-husabnd as - which makes her more relatable! I could see me pulling my bestie into the shenanigans that Shannon gets into!

I'm a little iffy on the love interests and where they might be heading!

I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

Refreshingly truthful and witchy

Jennifer Pickens does a lovely job capturing the subtle shifts for the supporting characters, and the sardonic wit of this very likable, pushing 50, horny divorcée with a taste for Jack Daniels. (Woman after my own heart). And I love the positive (and accurate) portrayal of magic and Wicca-style witchcraft. Interesting plot twists and not the happy ending you were expecting! So nice when women’s fiction carries a realistic feminist vibe.

Magical well

I’m not sure what’s going on here. Can anyone be a witch? I’m not 100% on the main love interest. I think I like Devon more 🤣.

Audio was good I liked her voice and the voice really does fit the story.

disappointing

Warning spoilers
I had high Hope's but struggled to finish. the cringe factor was too much, as a 42 year old woman I was insulted that the character who was mid 40s had no foundation she was just constantly horney, lusting over literally every Male character including one trying to take her property and con her she was a borderline alcoholic drinking nothing but wine andJack daniels, morning , noon and night ( maybe they paid for advertising, Jack daniels was mentioned more than anything else)and was referred to as old or late stage in life ,I repeat 40s and constantly ignoring friends help and advice by trying to be independent with red flags everywhere. This character was just so unrealistic and unpalatable I can not get past half way through the book. really tried as I paid for a credit .first time after hundreds of books I hate the main character.

great star to series

Enjoyed this book! Kept me riveted until the end. Looking forward to the next one. I have found a new favourite author!
This is a great book, I enjoyed reading it! It is more of a paranormal drama than a cozy mystery. It held my interest, and was well written. It would be exciting to start life over and find a magic witching well! I love that there are two hunks who like Shannon, makes it more interesting. I like the renovations going on, as I do that for work lol. Thank you for a great read!

Great company!!

I really enjoyed meeting these characters and getting to know them through the story was like having a bit of company whilst I got on with my day. The narrator delivered a warm and engaged performance and I felt like I was in really safe hands with the story unfolding in a way that kept me hooked from beginning to end.

Fun story, well worth the listen.

The story is great...its a fairy story for the over 40s. I enjoyed it very much, and was delighted to see that there is a second book to continue the story.
The narrator did a great job, and the story doesn't drag anywhere. I'm happy to recommend it

Fantastic!

This was a good listen. The book itself has a great storyline. I just loved how all the characters were introduced in the story. Shannon is such a kind and strong woman. When she inherits her aunts resort property she finds the wishing well and a A witches Grimoire. She soon finds out her aunt Maeve was a witch. She meets up with old friends and makes some new ones. There are some interesting men she would like to get to know better.
The narrator Jennifer Pickens was fantastic! She pulled you right into the story. She transitioned between characters flawlessly. I can’t wait to find out what happens next in this series.
