Her limited talent was enough to ensure a magical training, but she's very inexperienced and was lucky to get a position working in the Great Library. Now, the Grand Sorcerer - the most powerful magician of them all - is dying, although initially that makes little difference to Elaine; she certainly doesn't have the power to compete for higher status in the Golden City. Callum had seen things all his life. There are monsters and beasts living among people, but he learned very early not to admit such things, not if he didn’t want people to think him crazy. It turns out that the supernatural is real, but at 30, Callum has no desire to be part of that secret. Not that he has a choice when it turns out he is a mage, albeit one that hasn’t cast any spells in all his life. There are requirements, duties, and education that the powers that be insist he be subject to. To hell with that.

Alec began his 18th birthday with the temple monks. By day's end, he discovers he possesses magical abilities. Except his magic is unique. He doesn't require grimoires and incantations to cast spells. Alec's magic is entirely natural. He can, somehow, absorb the elements from objects and manipulate them according to his will. This power is incredible, but difficult to master. If he's going to learn how to use his natural magic, it'll take the tutelage of Archmage Diamondspear, one of the most adept magic users in the kingdom.

Rare Enthralling w/Intact Traditional Family
Aside from the fact that it was an excellent listen, it managed to escape the "stupid adults" trope. The adults were flawed as any human, but wanted the best for the children, changed when faced with new information, and apologized when necessary. I appreciated the way the mother and father worked together to parent exceptional children. They believed in their children and allowed them to face adversity (sometimes too much) to make them stronger. The children also respected their parents and surrounding adults even while pushing boundaries and questioning, some of resulting in disaster. It was far more realistic than most in it's genre. Bravo!

Fantastic story! You really get lost in this magical world and the narration is fantastic. Seskia really does a great job of bringing the story to life. Christopher really makes you feel like you're learning something that's absolutely real and factual and you are in school with the characters learning about magic.

And yet...more illogical flaws
ZERO is probably the most important thing that has happened to the kingdom, perhaps even humanity, in a thousand years. She may even be more important than royalty. They're so worried about her protection, that they surround her with...no one. No one watching over her, no bodyguard, no protection, nothing. And yet, and yet, and yet and yet and yet.

alternative view into school of magic
My first thoughts in the opening chapters continuously dragged me back into Hogwarts. However once you get past that you then identify with the characters, in fact knowing the Harry potter stories probably helps visualise some of the scenes, action and the magic.
