A series of death-defying short stories

I normally do not prefer post-apocalyptic novels but decided to give this one a chance based on the many good reviews. I was rewarded for my decision to give this book a try.

Christopher Woods defines the world in terms of the remains after a futuristic worldwide nuclear holocaust brought on by warring large corporations. He does this in book 1 by breaking down a section of the US centering around a once large metropolitan city into several factions. One being top-side governed by sectional urban warlords, some vile and sadistic, others powerful but peaceful. Each story is focused around a few supra MCs who had been implanted with tech engrams and who either acted as a one-man justice-delivering mercenary or as a local community protector.

The stories involved some functional section of the city's infrastructure, top-side, farming, underground sewer and water distribution and limited electrical power generation. Each section being Hobbesian nightmare of "No arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."

Riveting and well-written and performed hauntingly well by Mark Boyett.

3 dystopian novellas with a Western atmosphere

I preferred the first two stories. The third had moments in time and would skip to future events. It seemed more like a fleshed out outline than a cohesive story. The content of the third story was pretty brutal and ended on a cliffhanger. There were so many characters in the third novella, they were difficult to keep track of. The reader performed the book well.

Great story, writing is a little subpar

As a long time fan of the fallout series I really enjoyed this book. I haven't really found too many post apocalyptic books that I liked as much as this one. I'll definitely check out the other books in this series. My only complaint is the repetitive use of "this fallen world" or "this broken world" the first few times was alright but when it's said atleast 20 times within the first half of the book it just became cringy. Also the repetitive use of "he said, she said" was a little annoying. If you can get past that its a fun read/listen. There's a few other minor issues I have but nothing big it just reminds me of when I was about 13 or 14 and tried writing my own book that failed miserably looking back ha.

Free and Mark Boyett brought me here

As long as you ignore the trite “in the fallen world” and similar inserts, this whole series is ridiculously good. Like, really good. And I have never liked post-apocalyptic genre books before.

This fallen world blah blah blah this fallen world

First off I don't usually do reviews as they are like butts everyone has one and they are unique to each of us but Oh my GOD literally story goes: sentence, sentence, sentence, title, rinse and repeat every other paragraph it seems! Storyline could have been good but if I hear the word this fallen world one more time I WILL HAVE TO PUKE! The author must get paid every time they typed those words. I think I could even hear the narrator wonder how many times they would have to say it. I imagine if you used this story in a drinking game taking a shot every time you heard the title you would have to buy a case of your poison or run out 1/2 way thru at least!

Reminiscent of Fallout, but better

In the heart of The city arises a reluctant hero with a troubled past. But my review can't do this book justice. Best post apocalypse book I've read to date.

Outstanding take on a post nuclear war America.

More fun than any other post apocalyptic I have read. The main character of the first two stories is excellent and has just scratched the surface of his story potential.

Do you have to hear the title 100 times?

This a good book with a good story. However, the last part of the book I was ready to throw my phone if someone said “this fallen world” one more time.

Story is great….however

Right.

The author has very nearly taken a good book and ruined it.

Ending every chapter “in this fallen world” nearly drove me mad. It wasn’t clever, it nearly ruined the book. Without that stupid moniker…..This is an excellent 5 star listen for me.

Just try and block it out when it’s happening and focus on the excellent parts of this book.

First story is the best, I haven’t looked but I’m hoping there is more in this series.

Not bad

I can't get too excited about this book. It was a reasonable listen. Some interesting but clichéd characters. There is rather a lot of repetition. Lots of private jokes for the main character, explaining them away as old world stuff. It sure gets old! As does ending EVERY chapter with the words "this fallen world". Okay. I get it. This Fallen World. Give it up now! It may not bother you, but it irritated the hell out of me.

The narration is very good.

stop saying this fallen world at every paragraph!

repetitive repetitive and repetitive. concept started good... multipersonality special ops/ detective/ assassin in the post nuclear apocalypse... but each fight scene is identical and the narrative just.....gets....boring

Better than I expected

I went into this book with fairly low expectations, it being free on the plus catalog. Some of the plus catalog books have been good, others have been lacking therefore I don’t have high expectations. The first chapter ended with “this fallen world” and I cringed. When the second chapter ended the same way I actually thought of stopping but I was glad that I continued. This is a really good book with a good voice actor reading it.

The book is 3 stories all set in the same universe and story 2 is really a continuation of the first story. I was surprised when the 3rd story was different but still good. I liked the way the author told the story in the first person, this is something I usually dislike but when it’s good writing it doesn’t matter as much.

I really enjoyed the book and it’s better than just a good book but just falls short of being what I consider to be exceptional. I throughly recommend it if you are at all into dystopian fiction. I still wish you could give half stars as I would give this book 4.5 stars but I cannot so I give this book 4 stars and I will add this series to my future reading list.

Fantastic Stories

This books has some great stories with in it and strong characters with an interesting story line. At first I was getting annoyed with with the constant “this fallen world” but in the end I started to enjoy it was interesting how the author incorporated it. Narrator was really good and kept it interesting.
