Publisher's Summary

On a stifling afternoon at police HQ in Algiers, Superintendent Taleb, coasting towards retirement, with not even an air-conditioned office to show for his long years of service, is handed a ticking time bomb of a case that will take him deep into Algeria's troubled past and its fraught relationship with France.

To his dismay, he is assigned to work with Agent Hidouchi, an intimidating representative of the country's feared secret service, who makes it clear she intends to call the shots. They are instructed to pursue a former agent, now on the run after 20 years in prison for his part in a high-level corruption scandal. But their search will lead them inexorably towards a greater mystery, surrounding a murder that took place in Paris more than 50 years ago.

Uncovering the truth may be his responsibility, but Taleb is well aware that no one in Algeria wants to be reminded of the dark deeds carried out in the struggle for independence - or in the violence that has racked the nation since. Before long, he will face a choice he has long sought to avoid, between self-preservation and doing the right thing.

And, ultimately, the choice may not even be his to make.

Great story poor narration

The story and writing is as good as any Robert Goddard book but the narration is so boring I got the Kindle version. Don't waste your time listening just read the book.

a gripping story

A thrilling story based on factual events from the post-colonial period in Algiera and France, with sub-plot connected to Britain. The lead characters were vividly drawn into a complex and intriguing plot which held my attention throughout. I was sorry when it ended. As well as being a riveting read the book enlightened me on a shameful period in France's history and its consequences for Algieria.

Really enjoyable and educational

I have enjoyed many Robert Goddard books over the years and this one doesn’t disappoint. The background story about Algeria was particularly interesting and informative and the main characters were likeable, though flawed, which always improves a book.

The writing is, as ever, very descriptive and it would certainly make a good film as it was easy to imagine every scene. I enjoyed the narration although there wasn’t always as much distinction between the characters as some readers make, it was usually clear who was speaking. Highly recommended.

Stick with it

I often move in if a book fails to grab me in 20 mins but this meandered through to a decent story eventually. The narrator is a little ponderous but this aside I would recommend this book

Brilliant

One of the best pieces of fiction I have listened too in ages. Perhaps because it is based on historical facts I found it far more credible and interesting than most of the novels in the genre. Combined with the excellent proffessional narration makes it one of my favourite books in recent years.

story

very disapointed, i have read all his former books, been gripped by all, but this one hard to follow, skipping from time zones and couldn''t
engage with the characters as well.

Good romp

Great story with rounded characters although I did vague off a bit in the middle of the first half.
