Publisher's Summary

Reflecting on 40 years of matrimony, John Piper exalts the biblical meaning of marriage over its emotion, exhorting couples to keep their covenant for all the best reasons. Even in the days when people commonly stayed married "'til death do us part", there was never been a generation whose view of marriage was high enough, says Pastor John Piper. That is all the more true in our casual times.

Though personal selfishness and cultural bondage obstruct the wonder of God's purpose, it is found in God's Word, where his design can awaken a glorious vision capable of freeing every person from small, Christ-ignoring, romance-intoxicated views. Piper explains in reflecting on forty years of matrimony: "Most foundationally, marriage is the doing of God. And ultimately, marriage is the display of God. It displays the covenant-keeping love between Christ and his people to the world in a way that no other event or institution does. Marriage, therefore, is not mainly about being in love. It's mainly about telling the truth with our lives. And staying married is not about staying in love. It is about keeping covenant and putting the glory of Christ's covenant-keeping love on display."

This Momentary Marriage unpacks the biblical vision, its unexpected contours, and its weighty implications for married, single, divorced, and remarried alike.

A dangerous book in a fallen society.

What a wonderful book! Thanks to John Piper for his faith and the courage to express a belief so universally ridiculed in our society. I have struggled through 7 years of sin laden marriage, knowing by faith that I was called to persevere but not knowing exactly why or how to share my testimony. Within 10 minutes of starting this book I had my answers.

Good but Needed A More Practical & Inspiring Book

This was a good book, but I don't think I should have read it when I did. It was on the list of our church's biblical counseling reading list. I read it looking for hope for my very difficult marriage during a time of great fear and despair, and the encouragement and hope I have found in other books was somehow lacking here. It is biblical as far as I can tell. This book nobly draws us to the beauty of how the church is the bride of Christ, and how our marriage is a picture of Jesus and the Church. However, although I know the author in no way intended this, it left me grieving over how it was not that way and wanting practical advice, inspiring hope to go on, and what I could do as one person to help my marriage. Piper takes a strong view on the lifelong permanent vows of marriage, which I am desiring but it felt more theological than practical (which is likely his purpose in writing it. I just had different expectations). He made no mention of domestic violence or what to do when your spouse sins against you (which I have seen in other books such as "The Excellent Wife", which I highly recommend.

Married or a counselor

Everyone thinking of marriage, married or counsel the married to get this book. It's the mystery of marriage revealed to His followers. Also those who are followers of Christ but have divorce on the table or as an option (no matter how far in the back of their mind) should hear John Piper out first. Give him the chance to take you on a biblical view tour of marriage.

Amazingly Heavy

John Piper illuminates the covenant keeping love of Christ to His bride in such a magnificently powerful way that challenges what you thought you knew, what you know and all of what you will ever come to believe about marriage.

Definitely a MUST READ for everyone! Well done!
