Publisher's Summary

Middle-aged. Divorced. Hormonally imbalanced. Then she got magic. Underestimate her. That’ll be fun.

It’s official. Miriam Feldman is killing it in the midlife crisis department. She’s mastered boredom, aced invisibility, and graduated summa cum laude in smiling and playing nice in her post-divorce life.

Then her best friend gets tangled up with some vamps and goes missing. If that’s not scary enough, Miri snaps, and in a cold dark rage, unleashes a rare and powerful shadow magic. Now, with only a mouthy golem and a grumpy-yet-sexy French wolf shifter to help her navigate this world of hidden magic, she’s in a race against time to rescue her friend and keep her loved ones safe from the skeletons in her past.

Sure, she’s caught in a spiderweb of supernatural power plays, but she’s a librarian, she’s over 40, and she’s definitely done with being sidelined in her own life. She’s turning her invisibility into strength; they’ll never see her coming.

Throwing Shade features a sassy, slow-burn romance, a roller-coaster ride of a mystery, and a magical midlife adventure. Get it now!

A good Narrator can make or BREAK you

I have really enjoyed this author and her previous work but this voice actors cadence is really off to the point of irritating. Didn't and can't finish this one.

Throwing Shade by Deborah Wilde

Throwing Shade by Deborah Wilde
Paranormal women’s fiction. 1st book in the Magic After Midlife series.
Miriam is loving her 40’s. Until she discovers she has magic and she needs to use it to find her missing friend. Now she is working with a vampire, a wolf shifter and a golem but needs to keep the otherworld away from her daughter.

Humorous and entertaining. Much sarcasm, snark and hilarious comments like coming home from work and taking off her bra.
“Disco made everything better.”

I alternated between a paperback copy and an audiobook. The narrator was Croix Provence. I LOVED the audio version. It was upbeat, extremely well timed and included a wide variety of accents. I was occasionally confused on characters that sounded the same at times but overall the humor was infectious.

I love a woman taking back control of her life!

Miri is a smart, attractive, spunky woman with a teenage daughter, ex-husband, and best friend she adores. The relationship between her and her daughter is light-hearted, fun, and loving. She's now good friends with her ex-husband and they make a great example of raising a child together after divorce. Miri's been hiding her magic since she was 15 and it gets unleashed just in time to save her. Once it's out in the open, there's no putting it back again. She feels better than she ever has with it and her confidence and take charge attitude grows. When her best friend is kidnapped, she is drawn back into the magical world she has closed off since she was 15, and has to learn to navigate it and what the rules are now. With the help of a handsome wolf shifter, she goes on a journey to discover the truth about her bestie and what happened to her, determined to save her.
There are lots of laughs along the way and other great characters to meet and want to know more about.
The narration was excellent.
This story does involve Jewish lore, so if you're like me, and don't know much about it, it helped to look up more information on dybbuks. I paused my audiobook and read some articles on the lore. That helped me understand the plot of this book much better.
As always, Deborah Wilde, gives us characters we can laugh with and relate to on so many levels!

Original and entertaining.

I have read / listened to a lot of Paranormal Women's Fiction ( PWF) books since the genre was formalized in February 2020. And Throwing Shade is one of the best I've found. The story is really original, the characters are interesting, likeable, and rather hilarious. There is so much potential for a good robust series, I can't wait for the next book.

Narrator is everything

This audiobook needs Lorelei King. The narrator has her intensity turned up to 11 the whole book. She sounds like a kid in their 6th grade play that doesn’t know how to modulate their voice. I enjoyed the story, it just needs a better voice actor to be great.

Decent story, godawful narrator

The story is pretty entertaining and well written. This narrator, though... Man, this is not the profession for her. I felt like she was shouting everything she said while wearing a cheerleader outfit and pumping her pompoms all over the place. She was so terrible. At one point I thought, maybe I just don't like this story. So I stopped using Audible and started reading it on my kindle. Soooo much better.

So yeah, this one isn't one you listen to on Audible. It's one you have to physically read. Sorry folks 🤷‍♀️

Wow. Not good.

First the narrator, to me, was horrible. Then the story was just not my cup of tea. I usually like stories like this, but this one fell very short of keeping me interested. Stopped listening.

I’m not sure if the story was good or not, I couldn’t get into it at all. The narration was terrible. I returned it.

i have listened to and enjoyed Deborah's books, but this one was spoiled by the narrator so much so I couldn't finish listening to it so cannot comment on the story. the narrator's accents were so bad that it ruined the whole experience. Sorry Deborah.

Narrator made listening impossible

Unfortunately I found the intensity and over dramatic performance of the narrator prevented me from absorbing the storyline. Abandoned a short while in with no idea of plot.

worst narration ever

Good take ruined by terrible narration - not only a grating voice but individual characters with too similar voices, a Frenchman sounding like Arnold Schwarzenegger..... I could go on!

I love Deborah’s work……

….so this is a difficult review for me to write.
I’ll start by saying I read this book prior to the audible version coming out and I have fallen in love with yet another fantastic, kick ass heroine.
I want to be Miri when I grow up.
She has spent years hiding her magic and blocking off a part of herself to protect the ones she loves, but after a dear friend goes missing all bets are off. Throw in a sexy french shifter, a few vampires and a rambunctious golem and you have a brilliant recipe for a wonderful book.
However, I struggled to listen to the story.
This narrator is new to me and maybe I’ve been spoilt in the past but I just couldn’t get into it.
I felt like the pace was hit & miss and some of the accents questionable.
It’s a shame because I really wanted to enjoy it but it won’t stop me reading the next instalment.

Another great series

This is the start of a new series, and a brilliant one at that. It is narrated by Croix Provence, who did a great job of bringing the characters to life. I really like this author and so it’s a given that I would listen to this book, however it was so so much better than I could have hoped for and is now my favourite so far this year. The characters are wonderfully complex; I love how the story unfolds and causes Miriam to question her beliefs and values. She’s quick witted and an interesting, likeable character. Wilde has a talent for creating memorable and strong characters who feel real. Now onto Laurent, I wasn’t sure about the French accent at first but its definitely a grower, I ended up loving his dry wit. The romance element is a slow burn and compelling. Its paced perfectly throughout the book and you will want to continue with their story. It’s a fabulous start to a series and I cannot wait for the next instalment (it’s on pre-order already!). I would wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Loved the dynamics

Although the narrator was at times very forceful in her portrayal of the heroine, she did well with the other characters. Check the sample to see if she is right for you.

The series has started strongly and the magic world is opening up and so are the interesting characters. I am looking forward to listening to the next in the series.

The beginning to another brilliant series by Deborah Wilde

Miriam Feldman is my age and has a secret. And she kicks ass. And makes choices that rattle her cozy little life. And I don't remember the last time I understood a character and related to them to such a level. The story and worldbuilding are amazing, complex, and gripping, and this is just the first book in the series. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Fantastic new series

Thoroughly enjoyed this new fantasy series. Strong women characters. Interesting and engaging story. I wouldn't say no to a bit more happening with the love interest, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the next book.

Brilliant first in series

This is a another brilliant story form Deborah Wild.
Miriam is a Librarian at a law firm, Her life is in a rut. When she is attacked and her best friend Jude goes missing. Miriam has to call on her magic for the first time in years. She meet Laurent a wolf shifter. Can they work together to find Jude, protect her family and friend safe. The plot has lots of twists and turns and lots and lots of humour.
I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to the next book in this series. The choice of narrator is excellent.

Fun story. Needed to push through the initial over exuberant reading but it was worth it

Love this genre. Classic example with a few twists that make it stand out. Initially I struggled with the narrator but after a couple of hours she really settled in and I could relax and enjoy the fun.

Not to my taste

I didn’t enjoy the story, the lead character or the narrator’s performance. I gave up after 2 hours, finding it lacking in humour, charm and intrigue
