Publisher's Summary

From The Sunday Times best-selling author.

Thrown Away Child is a memoir covering Louise Allen’s abusive childhood in a foster home, how she survived - using her love of art as a sanctuary - and how she hopes to right old wrongs now by fostering children herself and campaigning for the improvement of foster care services. It is a compelling and inspirational story. This book gives a voice to the many children who grew up unhappily in care.

Wow!

This was definitely a difficult “read.” I listened to it in a day and was sobbing in the end. I am so, so, so sad for the Williams and Louises and young Barbaras out there. I have never understood the cycle of abuse. (I know it’s real - just don’t understand it.) it seems someone who knows how it feels could never repeat it. Anyway, I’m very happy that Louise eventually found happiness. I hope William did too. And I hope Kevin turned his life around and that Tim is happy today.

Mixed feelings

Book was extremely hard to listen to because of the content. Almost stopped several times but wanted to hear how she survived this horrible abuse. She was a very courageous child and it's by the grace of God she survived.

Corrupt system

I was a resource caregiver, unfortunately the CPS system do not look to the child and what they need… they took her out of school, under my care…I got the principal involve to help me to stop. She missed more school and that really upset me. Eventually her case was a high profile case and placed together with her siblings…. We tried to fight for her and her siblings. CPS felt it was a good idea to have her under a family members home. 4 months later, that family member couldn’t handle and eventually all the children were sent off to another foster home.

failed system failed children

Narrator was awesome. easy on the ears. The title captured me because I always say my mother threw me away when she put me in a supposed foster home.
I totally related to this and I loved the ending.

Touching

As a child who lived in foster care, although only for a short time, this book spoke to me. My foster parents were nothing like Louise's though. I can't imagine the horrors she went through. It was nice to hear in the end regardless of all she went through that she survived and it seems thrived.

brilliantly written

I think Sarah is my new favourite narrator, the book was very sad, I won't get into it as I don't want to spoil it for anyone. I love listening to audios on walks and when I'm driving, I think this, for me has been the book that has encouraged me to go out and walk more, just so I can finish it, I was completely gripped from start to finish much love to the author Louise Allen ❤

The strength to survive

I am not sure i could show the compassion louise did towards her foster mother later on but was glad she was able to walk away at the end, with her head and heart at peace. No children should live through...if they survive...the painful abuse as Louise has but it reminds us of the amazing strength children somehow find in saving themselves, too often by themselves. Thank-you for sharing your story, Louise....

How do you add a title to an abuse story.

This was a very moving story and the latter years with mother (not to give anything away) were inspiring in how It continued to the end
As a foster carer myself found this an incredible story.

A story that needed to be told

I have listened to many books of how the "so called" caring system has let vulnerable children down & Louise has so got it right that carers need too be listen to after all they are the ones that look after children 24/7 they know.
Her story is so very sad but I am so glad that she was not beaten down & she persuaded her dream. There are so many that have not.
Thank you Louise & I hope you live a happy life now, you so deserve it.

Amazing

I listened to this book in two days, Louise tells her story so we'll and against all odds she got her message out, I am really amazed at what she went through but also saddened. I loved the ending too.

Couldn’t put it down

I came across this book whilst scrolling.
Louise’s story was difficult to hear to first. I almost stopped listening because I was uncomfortable. So grateful for Louise to share her trauma. This was an education. How wonderful that she eventually used all the evil she endured for good. Bless.
