Publisher's Summary

Tommy Phan is a successful detective novelist living the American dream in Southern California. One evening he comes home to find a small rag doll on his doorstep. It’s a simple doll, covered entirely in white cloth, with crossed black stitches for the eyes and mouth, and another pair forming an X over the heart. Curious, he brings it inside.

That night Tommy hears an odd popping sound and looks up to see the stitches breaking over the doll’s heart. And in minutes the fabric of Tommy Phan’s reality will be torn apart. Something terrifying emerges from the pristine white cloth, something that will follow Tommy wherever he goes. Something that he can’t destroy. It wants Tommy’s life, and he doesn’t know why. He has only one ally, a beautiful, strangely intuitive waitress he meets by chance - or by a design far beyond his comprehension. He has too many questions, no answers, and very little time. Because the vicious and demonically clever doll has left this warning on Tommy’s computer screen: The deadline is dawn.

A great classic

I love this story but the narration can not touch the original with BD Wong.

Not the same people

I downloaded this one thinking that it was the same recording I'd been looking for since the late 1990s. This one has one very monotone narrator who can't pronounce the Vietnamese names to save his life. He reads each character's part in the same bland monotone voice regardless if that character is male or female. Horrible. A waste of the free introductory ebook.

A perfect combination of suspense and fun

I enjoy the characters and the family relationships portrayed in the story. Way way unrealistic. But sometimes you just need a departure from reality to put you in a good mood!

I love Dean Koontz!

Yet another wonderful Dean Koontz story that was very easy to escape into. Tommy Phan and Deliverance Payne are wonderful and I hope that Mr. Koontz continues their story sometime soon.

unbelievable poise

from start to finish, Mr. Halstead met my every expectation and surpassed them for what my inner monologue would contain... and of course Mr. Koontz blew my mind, as usual

crazy evil doll!

The story was enticing the first half of the story. The Vietnamese pronunciation of the words were not very well verbalize. I am a native speaker and I had to figure out what was being said. The voodoo doll was enough for me. Then, there was another story on the side about Dale Pain. That should be a separate book on its own. Overall this book was a 3.75 out of 5 rating for me.

Ticktock: Can we stretch this out any longer?

I loved the main character, Tommy Phan. He was wonderfully written. His partner, a hippie airhead blonde, was terrible. She was awkwardly antagonistic and a blatant know-it-all. After a few suspenseful chapters, the story devolved into repetitive silliness and grating interrogations by the blonde. Fun beginning, plodding middle, and anti-climactic climax. It felt as though Mr. Koontz was trying out a new series.

This was great fun

This was very entertaining and pulled at my heartstrings. I gave it five stars,, however I gave the performance four stars because his mispronunciation of Jaguar was so distracting. Every time I heard him say Jagwire it took me out of the spell the story had me under. Highly recommend this book. Hated for it to end

Really struggled with this

I love Dean Koontz books but my god, this was awful. It's longwinded to say the least. I struggled at the beginning quite a bit however managed to persevere. It did get slightly better but not enough to warrant finishing it. Avoid

A great story!!

I totally loved this story, I couldn't go to bed until I finished the last hour of it and I wasn't disappointed. All of the characters are great, I got lots of laughs from both mothers. In my opinion this is one of Dean Koontz best stories!!

Fast action

Great story, fast paced, exciting. A mix of family issues, pressures and ideals. Quirky. And other worldly..
