Publisher's Summary
The brand-new series from the Sunday Times number one best-selling author
The eagerly awaited first book in Philippa Gregory’s sweeping new series begins with the story of Alinor, a young midwife who finds herself tempted by a forbidden love affair. But in a society that has already set a path for her, she is all too aware of the dangers that await a woman who dares step out of place....
The unmissable listen for summer 2019.
Praise for Philippa Gregory:
"Gregory has popularised Tudor history perhaps more than any other living fiction writer... All of her books feature strong, complex women, doing their best to improve their lives in worlds dominated by men." (Sunday Times)
"Popular historical fiction at its finest, immaculately researched and superbly told." (The Times)
"Engrossing." (Sunday Express)

Misery
What a miserable story, nothing happy happens. I certainly won’t be reading the sequel any time soon.

For lovers of a English history and strong women
This book was recommended to me and to be honest I did not know what to expect.
Found the story captivating and could imagine the intolerable suffering women were subjected to in patriarchal England.
In the end the story swept me up and found I listened to the story day and night.

Wonderful story telling
Lovely to see what Philippa Gregory can do as a story teller when freed from the constraints of writing about well known historical figures. A brilliant expose also of misogyny expressed through religious righteousness.

Captivating
It started with a slow burn, and whilst none of the characters really grabbed me, the overarching story lured me in because it was beautifully woven, gritty and beautiful.
