Publisher's Summary

An unconventional woman and a man shrouded in mystery walk a tightrope of desire as they race against a killer to find a top secret invention before it’s too late.

Former trapeze artist Amalie Vaughn moved to Burning Cove to reinvent herself, but things are not going well. After spending her entire inheritance on a mansion with the intention of turning it into a bed-and-breakfast, she learns too late that the villa is said to be cursed. When the first guest, Dr. Norman Pickwell, is murdered by his robot invention during a sold-out demonstration, rumors circulate that the curse is real.

In the chaotic aftermath of the spectacle, Amalie watches as a stranger from the audience disappears behind the curtain. When Matthias Jones reappears, he is slipping a gun into a concealed holster. It looks like the gossip that is swirling around him is true - Matthias evidently does have connections to the criminal underworld.

Matthias is on the trail of a groundbreaking prototype cipher machine. He suspects that Pickwell stole the device and planned to sell it. But now Pickwell is dead and the machine has vanished. When Matthias’s investigation leads him to Amalie’s front door, the attraction between them is intense, but she knows it is also dangerous. Amalie and Matthias must decide if they can trust each other and the passion that binds them, because time is running out.

The narrator is awful!!!!

This narrator sounds like she is first time novice. I felt like screaming because I waited for this book but cannot enjoy it. At times is seems the main character is talking to herself because the voices are barely discernible from each other. From the very beginning as the man forces the girl up the tight rope you begin to realize the problem of “the voice.” I stopped at chapter five... just no more... NO MORE. The narration only gets worse as she begins to chew words with no sense of timing and rhythm. Not worth your credit. Buy a hard copy.

Nebo’s

I think this is the first book by Amanda Quick that I did not care that much for. Slow, not enough excitement for me. It was just okay.

This is not Jayne Castle writing the books anymore

I used to love Jayne Castle's books. But since 2015 any I come across is written with such a different style, much poorer unfortunately that I cannot stomach the difference. I i do not know who is writing those books now but I would not have such a dislike if that person would write under her own name or pseudonym not to decive the readers.

Poor choice of narrator

Sounds like the reader has a cold instead of sounding like a male character which distracts from the experience

Another winner!

I truely enjoyed this story, but I truly hope she risks back into some stories
in the earlier time period of defence or Victorian era

Whole Book is Terrible! Buyer beware.

The whole book is terrible. I’m glad I got this as part of a buy one get one sale. I’d been ticked if I paid full price. From the very beginning, I felt like like I was dropped in the story in the middle of the book. The story is stilted. No thought went into the plot. I rarely if ever give bad reviews, but this book is awful.

Ok

Review of audiobook borrowed through my library’s Overdrive app.
Quick aka Jayne Ann Krentz sets this historical romantic suspense in the period between 1929-1939, after the stock market crash but before WWII.
The location is Burning Cove on the California coast, a retreat for the rich and famous.

Amalie Vaughn is almost murdered on her trapeze and the trauma has her giving up the circus to run a bed & breakfast in Burning Cove. When her first paying guest is murdered by his robot, Amalie joins Mathias Jones in his investigation. They work with Luther Pell with assists from Reyna, Irene, Oliver, Chester & Detective Brandon. The plot thickens with the revelation Dr Pickwell had stolen an encryption device, was selling it, and planning to duplicate it. The team works to uncover the spy named Smith. More background history is uncovered about Luther.

Alvamar does not impress in her narration.

Again, I’d rate overall 3.5 stars with the bump up for good editing.

Fun story & great narrator

Enjoyed the story. In fact, I’ve listened to it twice. It was fun seeing a member of the Jones family in this story. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Tightrope Amanda’s Quick

The second book in this burning cove series is so much better than the first one as I really have enjoyed reading this one the performer is excellent I enjoyed the story immensely it has just enough romance without going crazy and it brought back that lovely hint of psychic powers writing that are known in Amanda quick later works

Amanda Quick never fails to please

I can’t remember the last book I listened to recently that I listened a the way through in one go. J K amazes again. With a good light story mystery arcane fantasy Along with yet another Jones woven into the tale. The narrator is reasonable. But not as good as some of the one older arcnaratord in other Arcane narrators. Still a reasonable listen
