Publisher's Summary

The course of true love never did run smooth....

When Fitzwilliam Darcy departs Hunsford after his disastrous proposal to Elizabeth Bennet, he does not expect their paths to cross again. Indeed, knowing the lady's true feelings for him, he makes every effort to see that they do not. But when a chance encounter leaves him stranded in an abandoned cottage with the one woman he can never have, Darcy quickly realizes there is more at risk than just Elizabeth's reputation.

Elizabeth Bennet knows Mr. Darcy is the last man in the world whom she could ever be prevailed on to marry. Until the morning he hands her a letter, his countenance as dark and forbidding as the windswept sky. Now, trapped in a snowstorm with the one person she was certain she despised, Elizabeth is startled to discover that her feelings are not at all what she expected.

But is one night alone together enough to alter the course of their future?

Can any man as proud as Mr. Darcy be expected to offer for the same woman a second time?

In this tale of serendipity and second chances, literature's unlikeliest couple must conquer pride, prejudice, and faulty first impressions in the elusive quest for their own happily ever after.

Just talk!!!!

I love the first hour of this novel, and the performance was really nice but there is one thing that I didn’t like that much. This is one of those novels where the conflict would be solved if the two main characters would just f*** talk!

Will they/Won’t they get together

A lot of angst and romantic tension that doesn’t lead to consummation. I would have at least appreciated him carrying her over threshold. Ending seemed abrupt. Stevie Zimmerman’s narration is excellent!

So Many Things To Love!

What if Lizzy and Darcy hadn't meet by chance at Pemberley, what if Darcy had missed her by just one day?

This Pride and Prejudice variation begins seven months after Darcy's failed proposal at the Hunsford parsonage. Darcy hasn't seen Lizzy since the day he pressed his letter into her hands, but she's been in his thoughts every moment. When he comes across Lizzy alone at an inn he offers to take her to her destination, but an accident leaves them stranded in a cottage alone with Darcy gravely injured.

There were so many things to love about this book! For starters, the locations, it took place in many familiar settings like Kent, London, Pemberley, and Longbourn, and introduced a special new one. For another, it spent so much time with some of my favorite characters like Georgiana and fleshed them out perfectly. And finally, there were so many lovely scenes between my favorite couple.

Poor Lizzy and Darcy! They just couldn't seem to learn how to communicate and they misread each other terribly. This lead to some heartbreaking misunderstandings. Their journey to happiness isn't smooth, but it made for a lovely listen and I highly recommend it.

Stevie Zimmerman's narration was outstanding, as always. She truly has the perfect voice for Darcy, deep and intense, with a touch of vulnerability. The entire performance was a pleasure and brought the story to life.

I loved this Pride and Prejudice Variation

Great book from the beginning to the end. Darcy and Elizabeth are traveling in a carriage during a snow storm. The carriage breaks an axle and crashes. Darcy is badly injured. The footman goes for help and Darcy and Elizabeth spend the night together in an unoccupied cottage overnight. All is well above board, but if anyone ever finds out they were together overnight, Elizabeth's reputation would be ruined. Darcy would have married her in a heartbeat, but Elizabeth has already rejected his earlier proposal and he believes he is the last person in the world she would ever marry. There is a total lack of honest conversation between the two and they both remain miserable, pining for one another. The listener must wait with patience to find out if they can break the logjam of misunderstanding a find their HEA.

Georgiana, Colonel Fitzwilliam, George Bingley, the Bennetts, Caroline Bingley, Wickham, and Lady Catherine all play a part in the story. Their lives turn out differently than in the Pride and Prejedice story, but all is good.

well written

Not my favorite P&P variation. There are so many I would never listen to again. I will listen to this one again. Just wished for more happy time with Darcy and Elizabeth together or a chapter years later that includes Georgiana and her happiness...children for D & E.

Great story

I loved this stranded with Darcy beginning. After Elizabeth and Darcy are rescued and separated after the storm, there are misunderstandings and incorrect perceptions, but the journey to their HEA is well worth it. The writing is excellent and Stevie Zimmerman as narrator is fabulous. I did note some mild audio noise in this recording. It didn’t distract too much. I listened on more than one device to make sure.

Highly recommend both the book (read multiple times) and the Audible version.

I loved the first 1/4th and the last few chapters.

While the writing style was good, I became increasing annoyed and frustrated with the continual misunderstandings and timing of events that kept Darcy and Elizabeth apart. I was less than half way through when I was rolling my eyes of these mishaps. I was anxious for ODC to come together and did not care at all for the increasing # of months that passed where both were miserable when they could have and should have been happy together.

I was glued to it!

5 stars all the way around. This story is better than the original. Did I actually say that??? Yes, yes I did. I like this ending so much better. I know that is dangerous territory as P & P is a classic. But, you like what you like. Also, the narrator is Stevie Zimmerman. I had never heard of her before but she has the most beautiful voice and I felt she did the characters well. I never got distracted by her. I am picky about narrators. Totally worth spending a credit on this one. I will listen to this again and again!

Great variation

The story is quite good. It's gets a bit "will they/won't they" to an extreme extent toward the 2/3 mark, but that is also the draw of P&P. A very good author of P&P variations and a pleasure to read.

Delightful story and perfect narration!

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and found Stevie Zimmerman the perfect narrator for the story. Her voice is lovely and smooth and she sounds much like Keira Knightley when she voices Elizabeth Bennet—so much so that I pictured her as the story progressed. It was a delightful experience!

I’m now looking for more stories narrated by Stevie Zimmerman. I’m a new fan!

A lovely listen

This book is wonderfully narrated. The story itself is a great retelling of the original Pride and Prejudice HEA. Full of angst, misunderstanding, and, romantic interludes.

What a Start

I was completely new to Jennifer Altman's writing. Just searched for Stevie Zimmerman's narrations and found this one, and as the sample sounded promising I bought the book.

And what a first one to choose. It was so delicious to widnes Elizabeth's and Fitzwilliam's love blossom. I found it so easy to picture the entire narrative with my eyes closed. I loved all the characters. I love books that allow me the full run of emotions - laughing out loud, smirking and crying...
just wonderful to be listening.

10/10 from me 👍

Tortuous and timorous

The angst, doubts and lack of backbone are ladled on with a trowel. I'm amazed that they achieved an HEA.

Beautiful story with great narration

I've read this story a couple of times before and it is ones of my favourite Pride and Prejudice variations, I love it when Darcy and Elizabeth have to be 'compromised' by accident. I loved Jennifer's version of Darcy, he was everything I dream of being moody and regretful, kind and caring and passionately in love with Elizabeth. Elizabeth too was a great version of her personality coming to realise how she felt about Darcy and realising who he is underneath his distant exterior. This story had plenty of excitement and barriers for them to overcome and reach their HEA. Stevie's narration as always was perfect and added so much to the story, I usually just read these kinds of stories but occasionally I find one that is made so much better by listening to it, this will now be in my list of audiobooks to regularly re-listen to!

very enjoyable!

I like how the author uses original Austen lines integrated in a whole new story line but therefore keeping the characters very recognisable.
The misunderstandings are well found, several unplanned meetings let you know the universe is trying to tell them something. All and all very enjoyable.
Zimmerman as always flawless in her story telling.

One of my favourite variations

I very much enjoyed this variation. The characters were great. I liked that there wasn’t angst just for the sake of it. There were some lough out loud moments and I found myself smiling throughout.
Thoroughly enjoyable and I hope Ms Altman writes more in this genre. A great storyteller.
Narration by Ms Zimmerman was perfect as usual.

Thoroughly enjoyable

This book didn’t stray too far from Austen’s world but was a fabulous listen, extremely well written without the trap that some of the variation novels fall into of the quick recap at the beginning. Stevie has spoilt me for any other narrator, no one else seems to get Darcy’s voice right.

Brilliant book, brilliant narration. 📖😊💛

I read To Conquer Pride when it was first released through Kindle, 4 months ago. It was Jennifer Altman's debut novel and i do not exaggerate when I say it is one of the best P&P variations I have ever read; and I have read quite a few! 📚

I am friends with Jennifer on Facebook, and when she announced several weeks ago that her wonderful book was being made into an audiobook, I was thrilled (as I have many audiobooks as well) but when she said Stevie Zimmerman was going to be the narrator...well, my cup runneth over.

If you love P&P, and its myriad spinoffs, and if you love an excellently narrated audiobook, then, To Conquer Pride is a must buy‼️👍🏻
