Publisher's Summary

Up until one minute ago, Gurlick was merely a specimen of homo sapiens, and a substandard specimen at that. But now, this craven, seething, barely literate drunk has ingested a spore that traveled light years before touching down on our planet...a spore that has, in turn, ingested Gurlick, turning him into a host for the Medusa. The Medusa is a hive mind so vast that it encompasses the life forms of a billion planets - and it is determined to ingest Earth as well.

In this mind-wrenching classic of science fiction, the visionary novelist Thomas Sturgeon places humanity on a collision course with an organism of unimaginable power and malevolence and reminds us how much we depend on each other - or even on a wretch like Gurlick.

Be Patient

The outdated attitudes from when this book was written made it cringeworthy at times. Specifically I'm referring to a scene and plot point where a woman is drugged and taken advantage of. This act and the subsequent reaction by all of the characters involved disgusted me. They attempt to explain that she actually wanted it to happen and the two were meant for each other in a way, but I still feel weird about it. However, the philosophy and imagination involved, as well as exquisite descriptions of emotion and motivation made it a fascinating listen at other times. I think it's ok to challenge yourself with uncomfortable situations and this book definitely brought that. Having said that, I wouldn't listen to it again.

Another amazing story by a great author

I'm not gonna lie. The first 2/3 of the story I was struggling to keep my interest and attention, wondering, "where is this supposed to be leading?"
But as the plot started coming together, I wasn't able to put it down.
The end made the beginning worth it and it left me smiling at its conclusion.
Written in the 50s, it must have been one of the earliest hive-mind-alien-invasion-stories, and although hundreds of authors have had 60-70 years and thousands of attempts to build upon and improve on the subject, this story holds its own even today.

Hard to Listen to

Originally a short story, the longer version (a "novella") was created by making every second chapter a new chapter dealing with some new extraneous character -- one of the weakest attempts at "padding" I have seen. The characters (new and old) were unappealing, the plot was implausible, and I did not like the narrator. The book was marred by gratuitous cruelty and other unpleasantness. I can accept a few negative characters, but all the characters and situations in this novel were negative until the "hive mind" component at the end. Life is not that dark.

I thought it was fantastic sci-fi

I don't know what other people expect out of their science-fiction, but from what I can gather this is legacy or classic sci-fi. Much like RAH or PKD. As far as I am concerned Theodore Sturgeon was way ahead of his time. Light years.

I enjoyed this novella immensely.

Not sure what to think!

Excellent, excellent reading. I was dumb struck towards what I thought was the end. Then it cascaded into what I can only assume was a drug induced hallucination. That was a disappointment. Still, I love the old sci fi writers. Definitely worth a listen.

Amazing journey

An example (imo) of what is best in writing. An exploration of identity, realty, humanity- and all this wrapped up in a science fiction bundle.

Familiar sci fi idea, unusual writing style

Alien encounter told through several almost extreme characters. Did hold interest throughout. A good quick listen.

Such an inventive writer. Wonderful imagination.

Great storyline. Well narrated. I'm glad I've discovered Theodore Sturgeon. He has a wonderful imagination. Recommended for lovers of the kind of sci-fi that brims with ideas and sets the listener thinking about the nature of humanity.
