Publisher's Summary

The Breakfast Club meets The Silver Linings Playbook in this powerful, provocative, and heartfelt novel about 12 endearing strangers who come together to make the most of their final days, from New York Times best-selling and award-winning author J. Michael Straczynski.

Mark Antonelli, a failed young writer looking down the barrel at 30, is planning a cross-country road trip. He buys a beat-up old tour bus. He hires a young army vet to drive it. He puts out an ad for others to join him along the way. But this will be a road trip like no other: His passengers are all fellow disheartened souls who have decided that this will be their final journey - upon arrival in San Francisco, they will find a cliff with an amazing view of the ocean at sunset, hit the gas, and drive out of this world.

The unlikely companions include a young woman with a chronic pain sensory disorder and another who was relentlessly bullied at school for her size; a bipolar, party-loving neo-hippie; a gentle coder with a literal hole in his heart and blue skin; and a poet dreaming of a better world beyond this one. We get to know them through access to their texts, emails, voicemails, and the daily journal entries they write as the price of admission for this trip.

By turns tragic, funny, quirky, charming, and deeply moving, Together We Will Go explores the decisions that brings these characters together, and the relationships that grow between them, with some discovering love and affection for the first time. But as they cross state lines and complications to the initial plan arise, it becomes clear that this is a novel as much about the will to live as the choice to end it. The final, unforgettable moments as they hurtle toward the decisions awaiting them will be remembered for a lifetime.

Critic Reviews

"With its engaging mix of emails, recordings, and sound effects, this book is perfectly realized in audio. Listeners will be captivated by the text conversations, impromptu recordings, and heartbreaking journal entries that are revealed throughout the trip. The narrators capture the depth of the passengers' personalities and circumstances, skillfully conveying their pain, shame, and exhaustion, while also highlighting their enduring tenderness. Discretion is strongly advised, but for those seeking a unique window onto a difficult topic, this is an unforgettable journey." (AudioFile Magazine)

Great cast, great writing, an emotional ride!

This is a beautiful, tragic, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking emotional roller coaster of a story. JMS does what he does best, creates compelling characters and lets them tell their own stories. I highly recommend the audible version because the cast reading really brings out the characters. I also recommend the audible version because I'm glad I didn't know when the ending was coming. I don't know that I've ever been more concerned about the fate of a cast of characters, or a cat, but I found myself worrying about the people (and cat) in this story even when I wasn't listening to it. And I'm still wondering if one of the characters is okay. I just ordered a hardcover so I can read this book myself, but I still recommend listening to the audible first.

Rough Read but Worth it.

Despite knowing the subject matter up front, this book was much more raw than I expected. It was painful and beautiful. Not a book for the faint of heart. The profanity and deep darkness the characters often live through can be hard to experience. But I'm glad I have it a chance.

Tremendous

First of all, kudos to the cast for the audio play. They made it come to life in a way I will never forget.

The multimedia nature of this novel makes it ideal, even mandatory, to listen to in this format. Told via journal entries, emails, text messages, and audio recordings, it’s more than reading; it’s an immersive experience.

The subject matter of suicide and suicidal ideation is presented with sensitivity, grace, intelligence, and humor. There is more than enough thought-provoking information here to promote deeper understanding, inform serious discussion, and, as the author is wont to say, start a few bar fights.

We are ultimately left to decide how we feel and what we think about this controversial and important subject, but if you experience this story, you will feel and think something.

It’s a story I will never forget. Thank you, JMS.

A powerful story that really examines life.

The audiobook production is great. The full cast makes it easy to keep characters straight. Acting is great as well. The story is full of people with flaws and heroic acts. I will be thinking about the actions, events and characters for weeks.

JMS does it again.,,

Whether television, film, comics, or a book, there is practically nothing JMS puts out there, that I wouldn’t take a look at. This book is yet another hit out of the park. Yet another thoughtful and emotional and beautiful look into what it means to experience life… and of course death…and the choice to pursue either. The audiobook experience was wonderfully helped by a full and varied cast. This book is not an easy book. It’s not about happy stories and happy endings. But neither is life. Still very much worth your time. Please don’t stop giving us meaningful stories, Mr. Straczynski!

yep him yep very good

Funny how this man manages to create imaginary characters, breathe life into them, and respect their boundaries as beings, I don't think I've ever quite seen it this way before.

Runs the gamut of human experience

Beautifully constructed plot pulling thoughts and feelings from me. I was absorbed learning about the characters as they interacted with each other and the events on their trek while feeling uncomfortable with the reason they were together. The voice actors were great contributing more meaning with the tones they used. I also appreciated the occasional sound effects such as the dictation recording and the text and email whoosh/beep. Helped a listener frame the content and keep it in context.

Depressing and dark

I don’t know what I was expecting here. I guess I got hooked by the “charming and quirky” descriptors offered. I found this book to be a glorification of suicide and really dark and depressing. I don’t recommend it.

Sophomoric

I generally don’t read fiction unless I want a distraction from my regular reading. The plot seemed interesting so I gave it a try. I finished it but didn’t find most of the characters more than just predictable.
