One book drawn out to 4

Wanted to love this after "Darker Love"... but. Repetition. It was highly annoying followed by the constant predictable sex. It was extremely slow and boring. The male narrator's hot/cold "accent" was distracting. Hard to find a solid series in this genre.

Verrrrry Long but a Good Listen

The “Tormentor Mine” series is about a group of Russian, South American, and US-based mobsters, and their symbiotic business relationships with the US Military and CIA.

In a previous review of an earlier book in this series, I expressed my disappointment in both narrators. Tracy Marks gives a poor performance as Sarah, narrating the beginning of every sentence in a rapid-fire style and then ending each sentence with a push of breath — strange. Her delivery is also very flat and emotionless.

Sebastian York, for all his obvious talent, cannot decide whether to use or not to use a Russian accent for his Russian character Peter, so he delivers an inconsistent and unconvincing performance. However, he does dramatically improve the accent in Books 3 & 4.

The four books in the series could be reduced to three in my opinion. First, there are actually too many sex scenes to keep them fresh and interesting. Not sure what else to say here - just too much and very repetitive.

Second, the book also contains too much mundane information about daily stuff like going to the grocery store, various descriptions of meal preparation, and who is going to drive Sarah where. Evenings out at bars and Sarah’s foray into singing in a band round out the distracting subplots that make this series too long!

The pros: Anna Zaires creates a very creepy vibe as Peter first inserts himself into Sarah’s life. You’ll have goosebumps hearing/reading a couple of their early interactions, and not because of the sexual energy but because of the brutality, intimidation, and danger involved. There are also some very hot sex scenes with Sarah and Peter, particularly early on. In addition, the final three hours hit the jackpot in terms of suspense, action, and resolution of open questions. Last, the main storyline is very interesting and complex, with many interesting characters, as long as the book stays in the storyline and does not wander off into unnecessary subplots.

It is definitely worth a listen if you enjoy the mafia romance genre.

It broke my suspension of disbelief too many times

every other chapter I read made me roll my eyes. I know this author and love her Twist Me series, but this story falls apart with even a cursory glance at it.

This story was so out there, what did I just listen to? Seriously, was there a story. Leaving the whole book confused.

Ugggghhh with the narration!

I love Sebastian York, but he should have just talked straight up without the weird accent on and off.. I think it's because I love his narration so much, that I thought it was actually kind of funny. I still enjoyed his parts.
Tracy Marks, though??? Terrible terrible terrible!!! Is she a robot? Sure sounds like it.
I bought this series despite Tracy Marks, because Sebastian York is the male narrator. That's why there's 2 stars for performance versus 1.

Captive romance mania!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎧🎧🎧
Romance: ❤️💙💜💚💛
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📙📕📗📘📔
World building: 🌎🌏🌍🌎🌍
Character development: 😌🤓😬😯🤗

The heroine: Dr. Sara Cobakis - she is sleep deprived, something happened to her husband George in some sort of auto accident. Sara feels a great deal of guilt over the accident. The whole thing about her husband is confusing at first. It is like he is in hiding or something.

The Hero(es): Peter Sokolov - he and his team are assassins that get over a million dollars a job. They are wanted by international authorities and between jobs they have been working through a list of people they are getting revenge on.

The Story: The book starts with the Hero suffering the loss of his wife and young son. At that time he worked for a special unit of the Spetsnaz, the Russian Special forces. In his job he did things like torture terrorists and his time with his wife and son kept some humanity in him. However, when they were taken from him, that died also and he lived for revenge

The book is in Dual POV and there were two narrators, neither of which I completely liked off the bat. I love a deep voice in a man and this guy had a very deep one, Though he sounded like he was a smoker, He had the kind of gravelly voice that isn’t sexy gravelly, but well past middle aged, longtime smoker gravelly. Though he did have a pretty good Russian accent There was nothing specific I didn’t like about the female narrator, but I think it was the way she spoke really fast and slowed down at the end of each sentence. It just didn’t sound natural.

Though it didn’t take too long to get used to the narration and the storylines were good. Anna Zaires does captive romance well and this one was all that and a bag of chips. It also included the characters from the Twist Me and the Capture Me trilogies. There is dubious consent, though I think that happens in many of the captive romance genre. There always seems to be the situation where the heroine wants to be intimate with the anti-hero, but she doesn’t want to want it. So despite her protestations, the intimacy happens and is justified because she technically wanted it even though she said she didn’t.

I must say though, I liked the dynamic between Peter and Sara. He knew early on that he loved her and though sometimes he wanted to hurt her, more often than not he treated her like a pampered princess. He did things like cook for her, brushed her hair, bathed her and more. Sara fought against his overwhelming possessiveness, but later admits she likes pain and being forced sometimes because of the guilt she feels for the feelings she has for Peter, who was a criminal.

I liked the love story and how it went. I like dark romance and captive romance. I like to read for enjoyment and don’t really like it when reviewers expect authors to set a good example by writing everything in a politically correct manner. We don’t expect that of authors of thrillers, murder mysteries, crime novels or other book types so why should we expect it of romance authors.

Not a bad book...love the story

SOME SPOILER!!!!!!!

Like I said, I love the story, but what I DON'T like is the repetitiveness, coarseness (I just HATE the "P" word) and the narrator's voice. When the male narrator talks, it sound more like a cowboy speaking (I just keep hearing what John Wayne's voice) and the female narrator over stressed her words. This just distract me from the book. book. Enjoyed every thing else!

Going to be a struggle listening to Tracy Marks

Just started it and Sebastian York as usual is his enthralling self. But Tracy Mark's is going to be a challenge. Her stilted voice is aggravating and I wouldn't be able to finish the book if it was just her.

Struggled with Tracy Marks' narration

Good story. Sebastian York is phenomenal as always. I was put off by the female narrator. I really love Anna Zaires' book but not with this female narration. Stilted and singsong like. It was a struggle to listen. I would have given 5 starts for everything

Loved this book

Loved this book and these narrators are my favourite! You think a series this long could get repetitive or boring but I always wanted to carry on listening! I loved the storyline and the characters! You know you’re well invested when you get p***** at the way a character has acted as if it was in real life... thanks for a good read Anna 👍🏼

So damn irritated by the female lead character

Could not move beyond book two in this series. I kept waiting g for the female lead to develop a backbone, to actually wise up to what she wanted and take control of it. I was so frustrated with the endless speculation, justification and passive acceptance that I gave up.

Weak

I'm half way into book 2 at the moment. Really tried to persevere but I have a few issues.
1. The female actor speaks way too fast. It's almost comical, and it's like everything is sped up. The male voice is okay.

2. The story just isn't great. It's a bit of a lame relationship between them, it's prematurely "loving" when they litrally don't know eachother and no trust is built.

3.pregnancy and everything about it is not sexy. Its clinical, and ugly. Sorry but it is. The whole "I want to get her pregnant thing" dried me up immediately. Just total turn off.

4.the story gets stale. There isn't ny real threat to her life or wellbeing. He's not course enough. No punishment and no payoff.

I wouldn't reccomend this series.

Love, love, love it!

Just finished listening to the audiobook and I can’t wait to start again. Definitely worth the read if you like semi-dark kidnap-romance stories. In relation to the authors other story ‘Twisted’, I enjoyed this more because it didn’t feel like the main female character was being forced and tortured. There was more respect between the two characters. 5/5 loved it and I’ll look out for the authors next book.
