This novel by Carl Hiaasen, author of Tourist Season and Native Tongue, begins as most thrillers do, with a killing. But this is no everyday, hum-drum, garden variety killing. Our hero, Nick Stranahan, a 42-year-old private investigator who has killed five men and been married five times, skewers his attacker's aorta with the razor-sharp bill of a stuffed marlin.

Story
Andrew Yancy - late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office - has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing). But first - this being Hiaasen country - Yancy must negotiate an obstacle course of wildly unpredictable events with a crew of even more wildly unpredictable characters.

I came within an inch of marrying a cheating slut. There. Get the picture? Good.

Comedy Masterpiece
The most hilarious book I have ever read.
The comedy is silent ,it catches you by surprise
so that you have to go back to read it again.
Serge is hilarious and his sidekick.
If you don't have a sense of humor you may miss a lot.
George wilson is the very best narrator out there.
Bar None especially in torpedo Juice.
I will read this again and again which is not
my usual.

Great story, choppy download
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The chapter headings run into the word before them and make it feel like parts are missing, but the story is so bizarre that without the book to compare to it's impossible to tell.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I always enjoy Serge's antics. He's insane in a fun way and combines genius with murder.
What does George Wilson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
George Wilson keeps the characters alive. He does remarkably well with such a complex narrative.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
If the chapters didn't run into one another and if I didn't have the sinking suspicion I was missing the last paragraph or so of some of the chapters, I would have no complaints.

Quintessential Floridiana
This book series should be mandatory listening for anyone considering relocating to Florida.
Florida isn't the shiny, happy postcard crap that gets sent to Sheboygan on a postcard. The seedy underbelly is alive and well and part of what makes this state spectacular. The author is fully aware of this and uses his experience as a Tampa journalist for inspiration. Some of the capers are far-fetched; but in Florida, they're not out of the realm of possibility.

Possibly funny but narrator is buzz kill
Just sample before you buy. This Wilson guy just sucks as a narrator. I love to laugh and I did a few times, not often. Dorsey tries a variety of shticks in a repeating pattern. Sometimes it’s clever or insightful but not comedic except [spoiler alert] around chapter 35 the guest towel bit hits home.
Some parts may be homages to contemporary or classic movies, The “Life of Brian” sideslip missed, eg. He really didn’t bother to organise or tie up loose ends. I’m gonna need some Dave Barry to replace the memory of this.

Serge Gets Married!
Serge Storms meets his match, literally and figuratively, when he sets out to find a wife and ends up with a lot more than he bargained for. As you might imagine, if you're familiar with Serge via Tim Dorsey's extensive series about his Florida-based adventures, his marriage to his soul mate is a ton of fun.
However... there is, in this entry, too much that is not about Serge. There are fewer Serge rants and history lessons than usual. The Serge gets married story doesn't really kick in until nearly halfway through. And there is a whole side plot about a drug kingpin that is just old and tired and not relevant to Serge. Hence only three stars to Dorsey for Story. When Serge is not even close to being the most prolific killer in the story (I think there's only one murder by him), then Dorsey has strayed from his mission.
Coleman makes his return in this book, after having been killed off in an earlier entry. Some have complained that he was too easily and implausibly resurrected, but I say a) the explanation makes enough sense to suffice, and b) Dorsey's omniscient narrator does admit to being unreliable, so points for honestly at least. Most importantly, Coleman is back, and as I know from having already read some later entries, that is good.

Where does Torpedo Juice rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Just love this series - can not get enough of Serge's madness.I have read and now picking up on Audio.
The Narrator brings life to the characters in such a brilliant way I often find myself laughing out loud and giggling insanely while listening.
