Publisher's Summary

From Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews, the deeply personal story of his lifelong obsession with strength—and how, after looking for it in all the wrong places, he finally found it

Terry Crews spent decades cultivating his bodybuilder physique and bravado. On the outside, he seemed invincible: he escaped his abusive father, went pro in the NFL, and broke into the glamorous world of Hollywood. But his fixation with appearing outwardly tough eventually turned into an exhausting performance in which repressing his emotions let them get the better of him—leading him into addiction and threatening the most important relationships in his life.

Now Crews is sharing the raw, never-before-told story of his quest to find the true meaning of toughness. In Tough, he examines arenas of life where he desperately sought control—masculinity, shame, sex, experiences with racism, and relationships—and recounts the setbacks and victories he faced while uprooting deeply ingrained toxic masculinity and finally confronting his insecurities, painful memories, and limiting beliefs. The result is not only the gripping story of a man's struggle against himself and how he finally got his mind right, but a bold indictment of the cultural norms and taboos that ask men to be outwardly tough while leaving them inwardly weak.

With Tough, Crews's journey of transformation offers a model for anyone who considers themselves a “tough guy” but feels unfulfilled; anyone struggling with procrastination or self-sabotage; and anyone ready to achieve true, lasting self-mastery.

It's Terry Crews. You love em, but he's missing it

It's Terry trying to make sense of race and kind of there and further than most sadly ever will be. But then the entire book is racist and race obsessed while he preaches about how non racists we should be, then proceeds to divide people by race. So he seems to still be missing a bit of the point.

Like reading 5 books in one!

Terry's writing style is super cool. In each of the 5 parts, he talks about the traumatic events of his childhood, how those manifest as a young adult, and how he overcomes. Then tackles another area of his life in the same way. Nothing is off limits in this book. He tells hard truths, and names names. I could not stop listening. As a middle aged white lady, even I could relate as the child of an alcoholic and a narcissist. I imagine there are some who will not love his views on racial equality (as opposed to supremacy) but I thought it was such a healthy, nuanced world view. He makes it clear that so many things are complicated in life and not described with a quip or sound byte. I absolutely loved this book and after hearing him read it, would love to share a meal or cup of coffee with him!!

Really good book

By far one of my favorite listens. A lot of great lessons, and great thoughts. I feel as if, a lot of people need to listen to this, and that it’s quite necessary. Thank you

What a phenomenal book!

"Amazing" gets overused, but this book truly is. A real, raw look at a man's journey through hardship, hard times, and hard luck and what he learned--and most importantly, what he has un-learned--from that experience.

In a society and culture that simultaneously distort and decry masculinity, this should be required reading for all men over 18. A masterclass is the power that only comes from true vulnerability, and the strength that only comes from gentleness.

Terry narrating the story truly makes it jump off the page (as it were). It felt less like a book and more like listening to a friend tell his story.

It's a hard story, and a tough story to hear. And it provokes tough, challenging inner conversations for the reader. But it's worth it. I can't recommend this highly enough, and I'm grateful to Terry for his vulnerability and for telling some tough truths.

Story and Performance Exceptional

This is a great story in and of itself - but the fact that Terry Crews himself narrated it makes it superb. I’m a guy much like a couple teachers Terry had in his youth - as white as they get, which really means nothing more than I’m white and Terry’s black. The real message from his story was the inspiration he provided by humbly and thoroughly detailing the trials, tribulations and triumphs throughout his life.
I share a birth month with Terry of July 1968 and I could not have grown up more different than he. But although my upbringing was vastly different, I couldn’t help but identify with Terry on so many levels - from an emotional and intellectual basis. I too was a driven determined people pleaser - and still am to a certain degree. Listening to some of his stories was cathartic.
The fact that Terry was and is continually learning about himself and pursuing peace and handling the inevitable struggles along the way is 90% of my takeaway. He didn’t gloss over his struggles and made no bones about his personal shortcoming as well and his families shortcomings. He did, however, explain how he navigated the difficult times throughout his life and how they ultimately shaped him as a person.

Excellent read!

I was completely taken in by Terry’s story and it gave me a lot of things to consider in my own life, specifically the question, “ who has control of your Aux cord?”

Great read for anyone looking to better themselves

Before reading this, I had heard of Terry Crews, but I couldn’t tell you anything he has done and had no idea he was ever in the NFL.

I connected a lot with many of the things Terry was saying in this book. While I didn’t have it as bad growing up, I still ended up with a lot of the same conceptions of how I needed to be based on how others acted and what was expected of me. I also had a lot of anger issues I didn’t even know I had until I got older. Luckily I had my own awakening before it got to the point of a “D-Day” like scenario with my family and have been working to be better since then.

While I connected with many things Terry said in this book, he made some connections that I haven’t made that have made me reevaluate how I still see and relate to certain issues in my life. I loved how Terry looks at things now and is willing to push forward in doing the right thing even if it’s definitely not the popular thing.

Touching, intelligent, laugh out loud funny

I loved this book as it gave an honest insight into Terry’s life, his struggles, his pain all with refreshing honesty and humour. It rang true to my experiences with my Dad and I’d recommend it to anyone, but especially men with testing relationships with their dads.

True toughness

Engaging story about a life that could’ve turned out so very differently. There are lessons within the pages that everyone can learn from. All delivered without preaching. Not sure this book would appeal to anyone who does not have any empathy.

A must read for anyone on a quest to find themselves

Terry’s story has touched me deeply. Although on paper we’re very different, there are so many relatable stories, emotions and challenges he’s faced I can relate to. In this way, his journey can teach millions about how to overcome their past, current hang ups and look to move through them with the courage and toughness he embodies.

Loved the whole book!

I learned a lot about Terry in this book. I mossed some events that apparently went viral, never knew about his addiction, never heard of the twitter waves coming at him.. blso it was very insightful and interesting. especially his encounters in his acting career. The way he stood up for himself by exposing an abuser was a pleasure to read. All in all, lots of wisdom and psychological insights and conclusions that I already know and try to live by as well. Thus Terry's book feels familiar and close to heart. I'm so glad he wrote it and shared with the world.

Exceptional performance and content

I stumbled onto Terry Crews when listening to a podcast (Tim Ferris) many years ago. I remember being struck by his honesty, sincerity and what an incredible story he has to tell.

Thank you for sharing this honest and inspiring story with the world, Terry. We need to hear more stories like this. So brave. You are a perfect example of mans ability to change for the better when facing your demons and being honest with oneself. You are a legend!

Such a great book…

I really enjoyed listening to Terry’s biography, written and narrated by himself. His story is filled with passion, honesty, vulnerability and a deep desire to connect with others on the journey of life. Many of his experiences ring true and I found myself agreeing with him on so many levels. Love this book and will definitely listen to it again so that it sinks in even further.

Understated brilliance

I wouldn't have read this book if I hadn't listened to a podcast interview and realised there is more here. With covid, the ‘celebrity biography/self-help book’ has become a weird subset genera that I don't particularly care for.

What sets this book apart is humbleness, humility and a willingness to learn. Terry Crews has an amazing attitude to life. He is open, honest and has some real insights into the human condition, overcoming adversity with love. Worth a read.

Through Terry’s honesty, there are opportunities to learn from his personal and interpersonal lessons to be a better person than you were yesterday. Which is surprising given the sort of person he admits he was, but in turn gives hope to all of us that are on their own personal journey

A good listen but not what I expected

A good insight into the life of Terry Crews and his challenges and struggles growing up. The order of the book was a bit difficult to follow but overall enjoyed it. I think the important thing that the book demonstrates is that everyone is on a journey, no matter what their status is in life.
