Perfect Training Book for Starting a Service Dog
This audible book makes a very strong case on the qualities to look for in selecting a service dog prospect. Instructions are to the point and easy to understand. I would recommend this book to anyone even if you're not training a service dog it will make your dog a better companion for every day living. I was looking to get a service dog for my son, when I came upon this book. It had so many good reviews that I chose this one, after reading it through, I can say that I am confident that the techniques in this book will help me to train our dog for my sons needs, as she is pretty well already in tune to him as is. A good primer yet needs improvement
Overall, I found this book to be a basic selection and training guide for dogs in general loosely -- and often ill fittingly -- adapted for psychiatric/psychological service work. The author guides readers/listeners through only a handful of tasks which he applies to a variety of different diagnoses. I was unimpressed with his apparently lay -- and regularly oversimplified to the level of being inaccurate -- descriptions of specific diagnoses. The author does provide a fairly well thought out discussion on housing laws, insurance and wellness, the pros and cons of different collars and harnesses, and behavioral expectations of service dogs in public spaces. If you're a consumer without a background in psychology or dog training who is looking for a primer on service dogs then this book is a good place to start your journey; just keep in mind that the author is a dog trainer and not a mental health professional.

Great guide for training your service dog!
I suffer from a few ailments/conditions that fall under the heading of psychiatric needs: I'm agorophobic, enochlophobic, OCD, among other issues. I really wanted a dog both as a loving companion, but also one that would help me go out into the world and feel safe, and also at home! This has really, really helped. It's easy to understand and implement, and I'm grateful to have found this audiobook!

Confirmation!
I believe I first noticed mild depression in my late teens. I self medicated with Marijuana and finally was admitted to the hospital for major depression. I hated the medication and didn't want to go back to self-medication so I talked to a psychiatrist about a Service Dog. That one thought I was better off than I presented and said, "Why don't you just get a dog? ". I struggled to just be normal and had a breakdown. Didn't want medication and I found a dog. She had basic training and not a typical Service Dog breed, American Akita. Her natural characteristics though made her perfect for me. She can smell when I am producing adrenalin and nudges me and licks my hand to alert and confirm for herself by taste.
My dog has given me back years! She is attentive, natural trait, and well received by society at large because of her training and beauty.
This book helps by increasing our bond without trainers. Thank you!
