Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

Publisher's Summary
Alastar has settled into his role as the Maitre of the Collegium. Now married with a daughter, he would like nothing better than to focus his efforts on improving Imager Isle and making it more self-sufficient. However, the rise in fortune of the merchant classes in Solidar over the years does not sit well with the High Holders, who see the erosion of their long-enjoyed privileges. Bad harvests and worse weather spark acts of violence and murder. In the midst of the crisis, some High Holders call for repeals of the Codis Legis, taking authority away from the Rex.
Once again, Alastar must maintain a careful political balance, but he cannot avoid the involvement of the Collegium when someone begins killing students. Trying to protect his imagers and hold Solidar together for the good of all, Alastar stumbles on to a plot by the High Holders involving illegal weapons, insurrection, and conspiracy.

Disappointed with the character development
What would have made Treachery’s Tools better?
it appear the author ran out of idea, the story could shorten by half.
What was most disappointing about L. E. Modesitt Jr.’s story?
Weak willed character that doesn't make any sense. The main character is a powerful imager that in charge of school with student being kill left and right, but all he do is internalized that how sorry that happen. When given the chance to take action by killing the one that attempt to kill him and actually kill his people, all he does is kill the hireling and leave the mastermind alone. Unlike previous main character of the series [Alastar] is weak and indecisive. The book about this character doesn't add to the world but taken away from it. In other series Alastar would've been a side antagonize character.
Have you listened to any of William Dufris’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I like the reading, he make the character real.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Treachery’s Tools?
I would tell the author to not milk the story, the story is long for it own sake instead of imparting information or character. A lot of unneeded drag out of scene just for the word count.
Any additional comments?
I love the Author writing and the series previous book, but this book really get to me. The main character are weak and the plot is lacking.

love the series
Another awesome book. I do wish I'd started reading the series at Quareyt's story as that seems to be the chronological beginning to the storyline and then gone back to the beginning.
I love the narrator, the only thing that bothered me in this second Alastair book is that the narrator changed the pronunciation of some of the characters names from the previous book. Most notable Alina and Kiron, I was binging and went straight from one audio book to the next and it really threw me, other than that I enjoyed it.

A good story with new twists, but for 2 things...
I enjoyed this book as I have enjoyed the rest of the imager books and that the books could be divided into 3 sets makes it easier to not get tired of them before they're finished.
My only issues were that many of the first names were the same as used in other books in the series, yet I can't remember any matching names in the first 2 sets of books. the second thing was the reader changed how he pronounced the names between the first and second books of this set.
