Publisher's Summary

Tribulation is a twisted mystery about an end-of-days religious cult manipulating space and traveling across planes of existence on electricity and radio signals. Cult members willingly accept seven brutal years of torture, known as their “tribulation,” to atone for their earthly sins and come out on the other side saved (or thoroughly brainwashed?). The hero of this thriller, Stacy Carlson, must uncover the mystery of the Tribulation cult after her husband Greg is kidnapped by its leader, Brother Elijah (Josh Charles), through a bizarre AM radio broadcast. Greg’s disappearance leads Stacy into this world of zealots, skeptical law enforcement, and a former rock star turned conspiracy radio host, Reid Singer. Stacy and Reid team up to uncover the truth about the otherworldly religious mythology before them. Will Stacy find her husband and bring down the cult? All will be revealed by the end of Tribulation.

Tribulation comes alive with immersive sound design and stellar multi-cast performance.

Note: Tribulation contains adult language and auditory depictions of violence.

Excellent!

Thriller, sci-fi, humour, it has it all! It's like watching a movie with your imagination. Excellent cast and excellent sound effects. Highly recommended

Wow!

I don't know what I expected, but this far surpassed anything I could have imagined. There were parts that were truly difficult to listen to, such as what I would call torture scenes, and I kept telling myself I was going to stop. But I am glad I didn't. Such a good story that kept me riveted. And the voice actors and dramatic effects were truly fantastic! And very creepy and disturbing. This book is worth the credit!

There was some profanity, but not at all gratuitous. And no sexual situations.

Unsettling, in the best way

Tribulation is a very compelling serial-format story exploring both cult mania and the ethereal potential of what lies just beyond our understanding. The pacing is exciting and always moving forward. Most impressive to me was the way they made the story so immersive. Every scene is multi-cast and the sound effects are so thorough it is easy to get totally absorbed into the story. It is an "experience".

Could make a dangerous drinking game

An interesting concept and there were some really great moments. The cast gives a captivating performance given all that was happening. What threw me off was all the screaming. If this were a drinking game and i took a shot every time someone screamed, I wouldn't survive the night.

Entertaining enough to pass the time.

Overall I enjoyed it but in the end not all the questions were answered and it tried way to hard to make parallels that didn't fit.

Not sure this counts as reading lol

Lots of spiritual references. Not sure if this was recomended to me because of my previous listening experiences. The production was great, storyline was just ok....although the idea of paranormal activity inside of radiowaves is a new concept to me. Fine for a free audible original.

Why do I say it's not reading? This book was heavy in the production i.e. soundtrack side. There were moments when there was zero talking, just car doors slamming, footsteps walking etc and thus ... not reading.

Very Confusing

I'm not sure if it was the writing or the added audio effects, but this audiobook was confusing as heck. I don't mind some effects in books, but there were times when so much was going on, I couldn't tell who was saying what. It could be my PTSD, I don't know, but I couldn't get past an hour and a half of this book.

Utter Rubbish. Don’t Waste Your Time Or Money

According to other reviews this audiobook was supposed to be really good.
I can only assume the other reviews were posted by the author, cast members or their friends & relatives.
It is utter tosh.
The book began with some promise but that was short lived as it then rapidly descended into a complete mess of a storyline, wooden characters that are overly annoying & non sensical periods of boringness.
Please take my word for it and don’t waste 8 hours and your money on this nonsense.

A Worthy Addition To Anyone's Library

This is a high quality drama with superb sound design. As can be seen by the title, this drama explores religious themes and is based very much on the born again Christian doctrines'. I'll leave it at that because it's scope is much larger, simply because of the various sci-fi elements.

For those who love dramas with distinctive sound design, or those who like dramas with a difference, pick this one up. I enjoyed it and will listen again many times.

WHAT AUDIBLE DOES BEST

Once again a cracking, tough and intense drama from Audible. Be warned this is very much an adult drama but it's great to listen to what I feel is the audio version of original content from premium streaming services, Netflix, amazon, etc. It treats it's listeners with respect and takes for granted your intelligence and confident enough to not have to patronise. Great listen, highly recommended.

More like a radio play than an audio book!

This wasn’t what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it. A full cast each giving a good performance made this an engaging listen even though the story would not normally be my cup of tea. Recommended.

Fitting title!

Started off really good, love a good mystery! But then it lost me almost completely. So so many characters, some brought in with little to no explanation at times and some with multiple identities/names/voices. The sound effects were extremely overwhelming and the sounds of torture weren't exactly what I called 'pleasant listening'. It was very well dramatised, the voice actors very were good, but there so much to follow, and it really felt like it was dragging by the end. With many twists and turns, developments to the story line, and some aspects that were hard to understand, it's a brilliant concept, there was just too much of it!

Worst audiobook dramatisation I’ve ever come across

Should have paid more heed to the other reviews here. This was dreadful. The script was full of clichés, the acting was hammy and at many points, blood curdling sound effects were supposed to make up for dialogue, but this isn’t cinema, so it’s just noise and often it doesn’t seem to make much sense or add to the plot. The plot itself was weak and repetitive. I downloaded this because the effort of making a dramatisation (rather than just straight reading of text of a book) usually means that the extra cost of a dramatisation is justified because of the quality of the writing, a dramatisation only usually happens if the writing is good enough to start with. That is not the case here. Don’t listen to this if you like BBC Radio 4 dramas, because it’s nowhere near as good. Very disappointing.

Brilliant but will make your nerves jangle!

I absolutely loved this audio book, but I can see why some people gave it such negative reviews. It is from start to finish, full of action as I believe was meant to have been a series of podcasts, in which performance’s are far more intense. There is lots of shouting, noise and horrid static noises, which will make your nerves jangle if you are not prepared. But, in my opinion it is a superb portrayal and story.

The experience itself is a tribulation

The actors are absolutely TERRIBLE. Practically every word spoken is done with this hostile, sarcastic, nasty or whiney tone - making every character utterly unlikeable. It leaves little possibility for dynamic dialogue.

The story seems interesting but is slow paced and painful to get through with this shrillness. I’m probably going to return it without finishing.

Sci Fi Horror

Aetheists would probably find this program amusing. As a Christian believer, I prefer the non-fiction version from the Bible. I did feel I was participating in a little blasphemy by listening to a lot of it but the drama was interesting. Cheers

A great listen

Kept me coming back for more. The performances were well done and the characters easily recognisable.

No stand out, "lovable" characters for me aside from the main protagonist and antagonist.

The story was basic, perhaps a bit shallow and lacking some character depth - but I did deliberately pick this book as it wasn't too long so I didn't expect much.

I'm looking forward to part 2.
