Publisher's Summary
Apprentice mage Chance Fortunato just can’t catch a break. His training has gotten even harder, and his mentor, Dr. Corwin, is pushing him to take his mage trials early. Still, it beats his old gig working for a demon. But life takes a turn for the worse when a member of his girlfriend Shade’s werewolf pack is killed by a member of a rogue pack. Adding insult to grief, the pack is forced to let the Conclave send an observer to monitor their investigation.
When the Conclave allows Jacob Kain, an alpha from the Boston clans, to act in their stead, though, things become even more complicated, as Kain has an agenda of his own. As Chance and Shade fight to keep Kain from taking over, a new enemy arrives with a very personal connection to Chance. Even if he can survive this deadly combination of forces, can he survive the plans of another, hidden enemy from his past? The only thing that is certain that before it’s all over, everyone’s true colors will show.

What? Why? Wtf? How? Why again?
These are the questions I kept asking myself. There's so many twists and turns in the book, that I care about none of them. Violence was used so wantonly, it lost all of its appeal. Talk back? Back hand. Raise your voice? Back hand. For any reason? Back hand.
This book genuinely feels like fanfiction. There's so much story crammed into this small book, that little of it is developed at all. This was frustrating to listen to, the characters acted irrationally, and several characters were used specifically to push a plot point. The author has some good ideas, but its a toss up if he actually can implement them well at all.

THIS IS AN EMBARRASSMENT TO REAL FANTASY AUTHORS!!
This author is a perfect picture of contradiction and pure ridiculousness. He makes a character than has enough mental fortitude to fight and destroy his demon master just to get his butt kicked by a werewolf and submit and give up and let people beat you half to death! This is so stupid! This author should be banned from publishing such b.s.!

Glorified male aggression dominance BS
I liked this series. I was wary of the first book based on title and summary, but gave it a try and was hooked. I went through the next four books basically enjoying everything. Then I got to this book. It felt like a kick in the gut. There is no justification in glorifying the type of violence and male aggression that the author does. I gave up in the middle of chapter 6. Now I just need to decide if it's just this book, this series, or the author in general who's on my never-read-again list.

I don’t often write reviews as I’m not an author & hesitate to criticize , but this particular book in the series needs a caveat. It’s very violent unnecessarily so I MO And I’m a huge fan of Abercrombie so if you’re familiar with his dark gritty world that says something about my general taste. But this book made me feel physically ill at times. There are awful displays of misogynistic attitudes & abuse. I only kept going in hopes of the female werewolf overcoming. It does touch well on some good social issues at times. There are a few bright spots too but if you are at all sensitive to to the mistreatment of women skip this one. The series is free in the plus catalog or I wouldn’t have bothered after book 2. Mainly because some Y/ A writers can include annoying quirks such as fashion descriptions and inappropriately written teenage sexual behavior My own personal peeves in this genre Teens don’t always have to be slaves to their raging hormones. It can and has been tastefully done by other writers

one of the better books of the series
I have felt that this series pretty much struggled after the first book. The main ideas were already used, and everything was about trying to find a new way to make things fresh and enjoyable. This book did that.
Early on in the book, chance gets scratched by a werewolf and as he changes into that, he loses his magic. This led to an entire new story arc of what it would be like if he never gets his magic back, and what his life will be like as a were. The antagonists are annoyingly one sided, but the premise of the book is still good.
If you have read thru the series this far, you will enjoy this one. Recommended.

I hate the Author and this entire series just because of this last book
This last book made me hate the entire series all of the character development that chance and Shad went through for the previous books is Null and void in this last one. As much as the antagonist characters called him a beta that’s exactly what you made chance in this last book firstly even more than usual he was getting beat the fuck up damn near every second he was getting beat up punished and could do nothing over and over it was redundant and stupid not only that another guy kissed his girl in front of him and then raped her again. Not only that I thought after the previous books shade will be more confident in this book you just got rid of all of her development she willingly allowed herself to be raped that was the dumbest shit I’ve ever read and just how much sexual abuse is one female character Supposed to take if I never see this book or this Author again it will be too soon. I wish I could give it no stars for each category

A lot better than the reviews said
If you can push past the first half of the book, which is really rough with the Alpha Male posturing, the rest is a wonderful read/listen. The rage and anxiety inducing beginning is set to counter the last half, which creates a stronger contrast.
Also, sticking with it really shows that though there are times Chance believes some of the nonsense at some points, the author does not. There are still some things that feel unresolved, but are likely to be dealt with in an upcoming sequel. I will stick around for it and wait for it eagerly.

00G Alpha.
There's a scene within the story where Shade is attempting to, lets say, lift Chances spirit. She talks to him about the event in 'earlier book' where she was "Given the chance to say No". However, in this book she seems to change her whole arc by saying "You said no" instead.
I may be off in my thinking but that really grated on me. But i look forward to a better next book.

for now a reasonable conclusion to the series
I have for the most part enjoyed the books. There have been times where they have dragged along for no purpose other than I feel to reach a word count in print format. Description of the same object and or person who or has been interacted with previous is of mild annoyance. As are holes left by the writer.
Many things left unanswered.
This could and should have been better, it ties up the main story but not much else. So there is hope the author will revisit the series at a later date to complete the story properly.

Chance submitting ಠ_ಠ
ಠ_ಠI don't don't believe that Chance would ever had submitted, he would rather die, he fought off his demon master so he would never be under someone else. This makes it so unbelievable, he would have fought that bastard till he couldn't move, then fought some more.

Story
I knew the sins of my past would call to collect what was left of my soul. If I'd known the price I'd pay, I would've sacrificed more to stay hidden from the magic. In the middle of Wyoming - away from the abnormals of the world - I thought I was free and clear. I started a new life. Found a love I'd never known in a husband, and a son who was my everything. And in a blinding instant, that life was stolen from me.
