Story
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

Publisher's Summary
A Southern doctor is pulled into a terrifying ring of murderous secrets in this “engrossing...full-tilt thriller” (The Washington Post) from the New York Times bestselling author of the Natchez Burning trilogy and the Penn Cage series.
Dr. Chris Shepard has never seen his new patient before. But the attractive young woman with the scarred face knows him all too well. An FBI agent working undercover, Alex Morse has come to Dr. Shepard’s office in Natchez, Mississippi, to unmask a killer. A local divorce attorney has a cluster of clients whose spouses have all died under mysterious circumstances. Agent Morse’s own brother-in-law was one of those clients, and now her beloved sister is dead. Then comes Morse's bombshell: Dr. Shepard’s own beautiful wife consulted this lawyer one week ago, a visit Shepard knew nothing about. Will he help Alex Morse catch a killer? Or is he the next one to fall victim to a deadly trap of sex, lies, and murder?
Brimming with the masterful suspense and intense psychological drama that made Turning Angel, Blood Memory, and The Quiet Game bestsellers, True Evil is an unnerving tale of evil lurking beneath the veneer of idyllic suburban life.

Good Story, but that narration....
The story was great, but when the narrator spoke in the voice of the character 'thinking to himself', I could barely hear him. This happened many times, it drove me crazy! I couldn't turn the volume up enough to account for this. I had to back up several times throughout the book.

Dick Hill over the top
Dick Hill does a too much acting in this performance, and it detracts from the story. At times his characters whisper so low that it is difficult to hear, very difficult if you are doing anything else while listening, especially exercising.

Terrible narration
I had a hard time getting over how bad the narrator was. There were many times I found him hard to hear/understand, and there were awkward pauses, like he came to the end of a line of text and paused before reading the next line, regardless of how the sentence should’ve been read.
And although the story started out interesting, I thought the characters were cliched and the author is not good at writing female or children.
I’m not sure why I finished listening. I should’ve quit after the first couple hours.

Truely Captivating and Terrifiying!!!
Would you consider the audio edition of True Evil to be better than the print version?
I never read the print version.
What other book might you compare True Evil to and why?
I can't compare it, it was unique.
What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He is an excellent narrator.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Sleep with Eyes Wide Open
Any additional comments?
The story really dives into the human psyche of do we really ever know someone. The killer's method of killing is untraceable and terrifying. It leaves you wondering if what he did is possible or will it be possible in the future. If so, we all won't sleep so easy.

I bought this book as part of a three for the price of two deal and I???m glad I did. The book is 17 hours but it don???t let go for a second. I???m starting to run out of Nelson DeMille, Vince Flynn, Michael Connelly, and Craig Johnson books so Greg Iles was a good find. I highly recommend this book.

What did you love best about True Evil?
Dick Hill's narration. I know he gets some bad reviews but I love him.

Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, he did an awesome job!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Wordy, unbelievable story and even WORSE narration!
Just when I could not take any more of this book and figured it had to be nearing the end, I looked to see the remaining time and it had 8 HOURS and 11 MINUTES TO GO!!! NO!!! Superfluous detail on unimportant matters, scenery, etc. and the fact that it is going nowhere very slowly, makes this a very, very tedious listen. Even WORSE is the narration. Dick Hill does a really dreadful job on this one, in my opinion. His female voices are unconvincing. The story is set in Natchez, Mississippi and every one of his male characters sounds like Foghorn Leghorn from the old Loony Tunes cartoons. I got it on a two for one credit, and now I know why. I mean... I Saaaay... This heya was baayad!

First Greg Iles Book-Certainly Not My Last!
Filled with sentiment, action and mystery this one will hold your attention. My wife and I listened to it at the same time, and it appealed to both of us. The protagonist is a female FBI agent with dogged determination. She has to compete with some clever criminals as well as overcome the incompetencies of one of her own bosses within her own agency. This puts her in a gray area where she has to do most of the detective work without the support of the FBI. She also chooses to bend the rules a bit and become a rogue agent when time and other circumstances begin to choke her progress.
This book would benefit from the addition of a female narrator. Dick Hill does an OK performance, but his attempts to sound like a female fall well short of the mark. When he tries to cry out or sound like a female in distress, it would be best if all, I say all neighborhood dogs are out of ear shot.

Not Quite as Good as Turning Angel
So I read this one and Turning Angel back to back. I gave Angel a 4 star rating (4.5 really) and would have given this one the same, right up to the end. The ending just lost if for me a bit. I wouldn't say it fizzled out, but it just appeared the author sort of ran out of steam and had some deadline to meet. One of the characters, albeit a supporting one until near the end, gets shot and killed without much of a to do at all. Bada boom bada bing. And this guy was a professional and the killer was not. It seemed to spiral in the same sort of direction after that. A lot of time was spent developing the characters, which was done well, and creating a plausible story, to end it sloppily. It’s like wrapping a diamond ring in a hefty bag. So I am left with a three star rating. It was a good story though and I did enjoy about 95% of it so I can still recommend it. I maybe could stretch it to 3.5

Respectfully disagree
Dick Hill saves this novel in my view.
Greg Iles is the one who makes the characters so insufferable.
The heroine is self-centered, ungrateful and as congenial as box of fire ants. The hero and all the other "good guy" characters are more than willing to go along with her unreasonable demands especially if there is a chance they will be killed, tick off the Boss or at least break a federal law.
1. A doctor leaves an office full of patients after receiving an urgent but vague call (as in "you have to come here right away but I can't tell you why") and does it several times!?!? Sure, why not?
2. A discredited FBI agent continually disobeys orders even from those trying to help her? Perfectly logical!
Naw, Iles gets a B minus on this story- it's an interesting plot but the characters don't elicit any concern.
Dick Hill gets a Meritorious Service Award for putting lipstick on this porcine story
