Publisher's Summary

Avery Sparks is a master at controlling chaos - and she gets plenty of opportunities as fire chief and head of emergency management in her hometown of Chance, Nebraska. The only thing she can't seem to control are her feelings when she's around Jake Mitchell, the man who was her first everything the night of their high school graduation. But Jake was so quick to leave Chance - and Avery - behind that she swore she'd move on.

While Avery's job is to minimize drama, Jake embraces the chaos of an emergency. After enlisting in the Army National Guard, Jake became a nationally recognized leader in disaster recovery. Yet a life on the road has left him restless. So when a class-four tornado wreaks havoc on Chance, he's eager to return home - and to the woman never far from his mind.

Now, Avery and Jake must team up to help their hometown weather a siege of violent storms. But it's clear to them both that nature isn't the only force they'll have to reckon with. Will Avery and Jake's whirlwind love affair be an all-new disaster - or can they recover from their stormy past to build a future together?

4 Twisted Up Stars

Ahh it is books like these that make be love the romance genre so much. It reminds me of Lori Foster, Jill Shalvis kinds of books.

This one was a second chance romance and I am a sucker for those. I loved the small town feel of the book. I really liked both the Hero and the Heroine. They had their struggles from the past and the present but there really wasn’t much drama it was just a very nice romance.

And sometimes you just need to pick up a book that you know you’re going to enjoy from start to finish.

I also very much liked the narration, Kate Rudd is a favorite of mine and she can narrate the he - ll out of a book!

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

I really enjoy audio books.

I usually love Erin Nicholas's books. When I saw this on Kindle Unlimited as a listen as well as read, I jumped on it by ditching another book in my queue so I could listen to this on an upcoming trip.

Kate Rudd did a really good job.

Unfortunately, I had a hard time liking the main characters. Jake was so arrogant through out the story. It took to the end of the book for me to start liking him even a little. Avery was sweet, but weak when it came to Jake. Throughout the book it's pointed out that she's such a strong capable woman, but I didn't really see it. Jake and Avery are in the middle of sex and he brings up his another times not feeling as good?! Really? Like I'd want that brought up in the middle of having sex. And Avery answers by saying "good"...and that's with all her self esteem issues when it comes to Jake and his family?

I plan to keep reading this series because I really like this author. I hope this was just an one off.

bland and predictable

maybe I've read too many of this series in quick succession but I found this one to be the weakest so far.

Sweet chaos

An adorable “can’t stay away even though you drive me crazy” kind of book. Totally sucked me in (what I did there?!;). Reading book 2. And 3 if I’m honest TODAY!!!!

Good Story

While I liked the story and enjoyed the majority of the banter, the push/pull got irritating towards the end. I know that romance is built on miscommunication but these are both professional people in positions of authority so they should be able to spend 5 minutes to communicate their fears. The h uses animosity which came across as childish and the H was pretty oblivious. Glad they resolved things and am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Twisted Up

I absolutely LOVED this one! Avery is fire chief in small town Chance and while setting up for the high school reunion everyone is whispering to her about Jake coming back to town when there he is and she sets fire to the table cloth. Of course! When they go to get more streamers they are locked in the shed and a kiss and more later a F-4 tornado hits. What a way to start the book! This is a wonderful second chance romance and more. It goes back to first love and forgiveness and learning to trust again. I cannot say again how much I enjoyed this one and recommend it.

Cheesy

There were too many over-the-top sex scenes and not enough story. The sex scenes somehow didn’t draw me in. I’m not sure what it was about the writing or the character; maybe it’s because Jake wasn’t exactly likable for me. It would have been better if there was more of a build-up in Jake and Avery’s relationship. I really disliked the parts where Jake got physical with Avery. In no way is it sexy for a man to lay his hands on a woman and force her to stay in a place or forces kiss on her. I did enjoy the part of the story about what happened between Avery and the Mitchells. There was some suspense as that plot line developed. Overall, the book was ok but not great.

twisted up in a city with twisters

Jake and Avery were school peers and maybe a little more over the years that followed graduation. Avery world was destroyed the day after she gave Jake the only gift that was her own to give. The family she thought would be her whole world imploded all on one day. She made the decision to leave and not look back. She was going to move forward all on her own. As the story of Avery and Jake unravels pain and sorrow become something tangible.

Erin Nicolas did a fab job creating her world of Chance and the issues that plague the city. The characters she built around the community and the cousins returning home to help their own people, hometown, and find love while doing all that and some. Avery was likable right off the bat. She was flawed, vulnerable and real. Jake was a bit hard to connect with but in time it was easy.

Kate Rudd did a good job narrating Twisted Up in Taking Chances by Erin Nicholas. Each character had a distinct voice with highs and lows of pitch and tone. There was a vivid show taking place in the mind as the audio played.

Blew through like a tornado

I have been a fan of erin Nicholas for a long time now. Her writing always gives me the great feels. This is the first audio I’ve listened to and it brought a whole new level to the story. Avery and Jake are so good together especially with a tornado raging above them. Kinda describes their relationship too. They have been swirling around each other for ten long years. Their challenges are many but to hear them work through them? Awesome!

A bit of a blowhard

A bit pedantic and relied too much on the continuing declarations of sexual intent.
The story line was missing anything of substance but in its favour it was a good easy read/listen and followed all the well known paths of romantic stories
