Story
Of the many books on UFOs and aliens, this one may be unique. Richard Dolan, one of the world’s leading historians of the UFO subject, has analyzed the different alien types and agendas based on longstanding patterns observed by witnesses. This is both a careful review of the best evidence we have of human-alien interaction, as well as a bold speculation of just who the aliens are and what they want. Dolan’s analysis starts with our ancient prehistory and potential genetic modifications and monitoring by extraterrestrials.

In a direct, authoritative challenge to researchers who believe the abduction phenomenon is essentially benevolent and spiritually uplifting, Professor David M. In Dimensions, Dr. Jacques Vallee reexamines the historical record that led to the modern UFO phenomenon and to the belief in alien contact. He then tackles the enigma of abduction reports, which come from various times and various countries, as well as the psychic and spiritual components of the contact experience. In the last portion of the book, he notes the factors that inhibit research into the phenomenon - the triple coverup and political motivations - and concludes that the extraterrestrial theory is simply not strange enough to explain the facts.

Publisher's Summary
Richard Dolan's UFOs and the National Security State (Volume 1) has become a classic work of UFO history, a must for all students of this often confusing subject - or simply for those who want a deeper understanding of a key part of 20th-century history. This is the first volume of a two-part detailed chronological narrative of the national security dimensions of the UFO phenomenon from 1941 to the present. Working from hundreds of declassified records and other primary and secondary sources, Dolan centers his investigation on the American military and intelligence communities, demonstrating that they take UFOs seriously indeed.
Included in this volume are the activities of more than 50 military bases relating to UFOs, innumerable violations of sensitive airspace by unknown craft, and analyses of the Roswell controversy, the CIA-sponsored Robertson Panel, and the Condon Committee Report. Dolan highlights the development of civilian anti-secrecy movements, which flourished in the 1950s and 1960s until the adoption of an official government policy and subsequent "closing of the door" during the Nixon administration.

Poor Narration
Where oh where does Audible find these narrators? Baldwin has a pleasant, well-modulated voice, but the positives end there. He doesn't so much speak the lines as sing them. Example: MILL-yuns of people report STRANGE objects that were SEEN throughout the country and seemed to DE-FY the standard rules of flight. (Chapter 2) This sing-song presentation continues throughout the book.
And the pronunciation: where to begin? YOW-man for yeoman, ob-fee-us-cated for obfuscated,
ve-HEE-mently for vehemently, proov-nance for provenance, SKIN-tillating for scintillating, and strangely, indeliably. (I have no idea what word he was going for here.) And so much more.
He sounds like a youngish man, and therefore did not live through the tenure of Secretary of State Dean Acheson, (which he renders as ACK-sun) Adlai Stevenson (AD-lee), Clare Boothe Luce, which he mysteriously conjures into Loo-SAY, and even the celebrated Chuck Yeager, whose name he mangles into YEE-ger. (You-Tube could help with all this.) Perhaps he would understand if we changed his name to Baldwini. He seems to have a shallow level of general knowledge, seemingly unaware of the Azores (Azoreeze), the Zuider-Zee River, (Zoo-i-der) Bogota so that it rhymes with pagoda, and even good old Shreveport LA, becomes Shrooveport. And so much more. Add to that his habit of pronouncing words containing the consonant blend "str" as "shtr" and we get hybrids such as shtrange, ec-shtreme,
ec-shtra-terresh-trial, and so on.
Much of the material in this book is compelling so I resisted the frequent urge to pack it in, but it was a struggle.

A great overview of the first 30 years of ufology
Dolan's two volumes, UFOs and the National Security State, are exhaustive and well researched. I'm happy to now have it in audiobook form. Baldwin's pronunciation of some names is cringe worthy, but his voice is enjoyable and worth the power through. If you're interested in the UFO topic, this is a great place to start.

Fantastic!
This is a must read for anyone looking to research UFOs of the 20th century. This book is full of cases I was unaware of and all can be looked up independently and verified. Excellent book, to say the least, and it's a great look into the past history of the UFO phenomenon. My favorite part of the book is that it is chronological, it makes you feel like you're reliving past events as the years went by and helps the reader understand the scope of the cover up in a comprehensive manner.

Great story but 6 hours is my max for Baldwin
I so want to hear the complete text of this book. I've listened to six hour but sadly can't listen to another 15 of Baldwin's narration. I am deeply interested in the subject matter and specifically in Dolan's book. Baldwin's voice is pleasant enough and I think he has potential to be quite good. His problems are correct word pronunciations. Many names of important players and many common words, common at least to those who would read books written at higher than an eighth grade level and, which contain a lot of military and government vernacular, are butchered so much so that one has to wonder if Baldwin even knows meaning of the words he's reading, let alone understand the meaning of the sentences in this book. Despite the frequent interruptions to the flow of his reading, the single word I find most distracting and which makes his reading no longer listenable for me is his pronunciation of the word "saw", which he pronounces as "saul". As you might imagine, this word is used a lot throughout a book where the major focus is on unimaginable craft, events, creatures and humanoids that people "saw". It's a simple word, one of which anyone who reads knows the spelling--and presumably can sound out. The word is "saw" not "saul". At every instance of "saw" we get "Saul". I find myself feeling so frustrated, even angry at the illiteracy and stupidness of the constant mispronunciation. may seem petty on my part but It's just more than I can listen to for another 15 hours. I would think it not only reasonable but a normal part of the process of publishing an Audible book to proof the reading, making even the simplest of corrections. Please, please, please have someone listen to a reading before putting a book online.

A milestone in documenting the phenomenon
I'm a 'book lurker' if this is a thing. I read and listen since decades without to write reviews, but this book deserves my first. I got the Kindle version, but since this book is very big (500+ pages), one would miss a lot with one time reading. So I got the audiobook to listen to while doing auto-pilot tasks.
The history of UFO research had big and respectable names in the past, but nowadays Mr. Dolan stands almost alone to keep this subject within the rational realm of check and balance without the spell of any believe system or preset universal view. As the title says, this book is only about the period from 1941 to 1973.
Unfortunately, due to the tremendous disinformation efforts conducted by the most powerful governments, one needs such a book for a thorough review and clean information layout of proven facts to keep the truth on check. Simply put, UFOs are real and they are not man-made. That is at least in my opinion after more around 22 years of perusal.
I am in The Netherlands and I know for fact that at the top of the ladder within the techno-military complex, which my country has in common with Belgium and Germany, the phenomenon of UFO is taken more seriously than the barbaric war Russia is raging in Ukraine. Also I know that the coordination with the US and the UK in this matter is by leaps and bounds.
Needless to mention, this is behind the curtain. But this curtain can be very thin for any person who believes in his own judgment and conducts his own research for a sufficient period of time without prejudice. This book is a real treasure for such research.
I can't thank Mr. Dolan enough for this effort!

Best ufo series
This was the book after many reads and listens that turned me from sceptic to, let's just say, very interested in learning more, and that's an understatement. This is the first of a series of 3. 1 and 2 are written I believe the 3rd is being written. It's excellent both in info provided and pacing and density of info provided. This author started of as an academic with a speciality in US military history. But got interested in the ufo subject. Its the best book to read if your getting started or are a veteran. Start with this series it's all you'll need.

Very well read with in depth views.
Feel this to be a very comprehensive look into the full area involving govt and Et cover ups, leaked info. Arthur of the book still holds good values towards his research. Maybe for the more well read researches in the field. Yet highly recommend.

Award-winning investigative journalist Ross Coulthart has been intrigued by UFOs since mysterious glowing lights were reported near New Zealand's Kaikoura mountains when he was a teenager. The 1978 sighting is just one of thousands since the 1940s, and yet research into UFOs is still seen as the realm of crackpots and conspiracy theorists.

The UFO enigma has been part of our culture since the 1940s and is building to a worldwide explosion of acceptance today. Now, as governments around the world open their files and records on internal UFO investigations, the US remains steadfast in its denial of interest in the UFO issue. As more of the world's population accepts the possibility of an extraterrestrial presence, the demand is building for disclosure from the United States.
