Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

All he needs to do is mind his own business and avoid any messy human dramas for just a few more weeks. But it is on one of those quiet nights when he hears them outside: the MP140s. Publisher's Summary
After the recent near-destruction of the USS Hamilton, Captain Galvin Quintos has been lying low, getting the USS Jefferson ready for service.
In the midst of refurbishing the vessel, he gets a call for help from his former XO, new starship captain Gail Pristy. The Varapin have lured the Ninth Fleet into a devious trap, and it’s not long before Quintos has his orders to hurry to the rescue. But the Varapin have a colossal new warship - one that puts anything the US Space-Navy has to shame. Even after Quintos assembles a crew, he’ll still need to pull a few rabbits, along with a few Symbio Poths, out of a hat to have any chance of surviving the coming battle. And Quintos’ one last hope - reuniting with a past enemy - may prove as dangerous as fighting the Varapin themselves.

This is the last book in this series I will get
I thoroughly enjoyed the USS Hamilton series, including this book 4. However, I just learned that book 5 ends in the middle of a battle – a cliff-hanger in the true sense of the word. I’m out. Frankly, I believe ending a book on a cliff-hanger is lazy writing. Rather than getting the listener to buy the next book in the series, (book 6), because the writing is so good, the author forces the listener to buy book 6 so he/she can see how book 5 ends. There's nothing in the advertising for book 5 that it’s only half a book – that the story ends in the middle, and I’ll have to buy another book to find out how book 5 ends. I only learned that fact from the reviews. Lazy writing - write a book, and then cut it in half and release it as two books, without warning the reader.
So, this book - #4 in the series - was very good and did not end in a cliff-hanger. But I'm not moving on to book 5 etc. because I will not support a lazy writer who tricks his listener into having to buy more books.

Book Review of USS Jefferson!
This is book 4 of the USS Hamilton series and it grabbed my attention from the first word till the end! It was full of action, love and mystery! Would liked to have more of the gaming deck in the story. What happened with the simbiopods at the more than made up for the lack of it in the story! Great narration of the story by James Patrick Cronin! The author Mark Wayne McGinnis wrote a fantastic story. Love reading or listening to the series!

I still don't really understand this series except
Except I really, really enjoyed this book and the series so far.
Yet, again where the author finds all the hats to pull the proverbial rabbit from I'am not sure.
Its a quirky series that no-one should enjoy, but after book (4) Iam just hoping book (5) doesn't take too long to appear.
A special note of thank you, must go to narrator James Patrick Cronin.
His depiction of Hardy is worth the cost of the book itself.
