Story
For thousands of years, scientists, philosophers, and self-help gurus have wrestled with one of the basic conundrums of human life: Why do we do the things we do? Or, rather, why do we so often not do the things we want to do? In You're a Miracle (and a Pain in the Ass), McHargue addresses these issues. We like to think we’re in control of our thoughts and decisions, he writes, but science has shown that a host of competing impulses, emotions, and environmental factors are at play in every action we undertake.

This book is totally inspiring. The narrator that is reading it talks like a robot with absolutely no normal inflection or human emotion, turning something that could be awesomely inspiring into an annoying snoozefest. Almost unlistenable.

PLEASE HIRE A VOICE ACTOR
I've tried 3 times to listen to this, but I just can't get through it. The read is horrendous.
There are a number of mispronounced words, for example Ensign, which is a rank in the Navy, and he sounds like he's saying enzyme.
He sounds like he's reading from the book. Which he's is, but he's not supposed to sound like it.
I loved Way Of The Seal. It had great information and was performed very well.
This just makes it near impossible to listen to CDR Divine's guidance and skills. Very, very unfortunate.

New narrator please
One of my most highly recommended books on personal and leadership development is distracted by mispronounced words and at times very odd pace, pitch, and modulation. Navy ranks are mispronounced. On plus side it provides mental focus training by forcing listener to ignore narrator while hearing message of author.

I really enjoy the insight in the writing- the specific tools provided and the history. However, I can't seem to get done because the reader sounds like a Canadian robot . It's really difficult to listen to. Breaks and strong pauses after every word .. Really takes away from the content. The book is strong and rugged, the reader should mirror.

Shares some great insights and techniques - but not in great detail
Mark Divine has made a career out of being tough not being a writer. His knee deep manifesto on the tricks of the trade to build mental toughness, resilience, and leadership techniques are excellent avenues for the interested reader to pursue. My one qualm is that there wasn't more information given, but since each technique, skill, mindset, regimen, etc. could fill a book, the author is unfortunately left presenting at most a slightly detailed explanation of the overall concept while providing an example or two.
His personal experiences peppered throughout are inspiring, and display the confidence he mentions throughout the book. He is absolutely sure of himself which makes it easy to want to take his advice. Another slight criticism is that his stories almost go out of there way at points to dig into liberal politics. I expect a man of Divine's balanced and in-check emotional state to forego this out of place and distracting fluff.
Overall not a bad resource, the narrator takes an hour or so to get comfortable with but his mispronunciation and unnatural cadence persists throughout the end. By the final chapter, it's more something to chuckle at than get distracted over. I would never listen to him read prose, and short examples within this book as quotations drive this point home, however as he's narrating a rather dry primer on self-discipline, the narration can't really do too much more harm to the source material.

Not unbeatable.
Would you try another book written by Mark Divine or narrated by Brock Armstrong?
No. I think I know what is the content of this particular snake-oil seller's goods.
What was most disappointing about Mark Divine’s story?
No actual guides, hints or tools to 'FORGE RESILIENCY AND MENTAL TOUGHNESS', just a prolonged salespitch for his Kokoro-camp. He does mention breathing techniques, which he has relabeled as if he had invented them..
What three words best describe Brock Armstrong’s performance?
unmemorable
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No. This is supposed to be revised edition, something that has been fixed and vetted through. Nope.
Any additional comments?
Avoid. Just another seal cashing in his trident.

Why are authors employing robot narrators?
I listened to 2 minutes and turned it off. I'll read it and review the book properly based on the actual content but I simply can't listen to the machine like reading of someone with zero emotional connection with the literature.
I listened to Tony Robin's Unleash the power within narrated by Tony Robbins, it was awesome. I listened to David Goggin's Can't hurt me narrated by his personal friend with additional commentary by David, it was awesome. Ross Edgeley's art of resilience narrated by Ross - awesome. Mark Divine sounds great in interviews, why has he let this book be read by this robotic voice?? Sorry Mark, I'm sure the content is good but just wish you'd read it yourself.

complete your mission
This is a cool book!
Divine has seen and done a lot of things, and it's really helpful to piggy-back on his experiences to find practices one can look to implement in their own life. There's heaps of practical exercises that you can try out straight away, and Divine discusses the thoughts and feelings he was having through them so you have an idea of what to expect.
It's obviously working to get the reader into the 'Divine Ecosystem' of training materials and schools, but there's plenty in the book in isolation to achieve great things for a motivated reader.
I really enjoyed the stories peppered through the book of experiences Divine has been through that are contextualised into the content of the chapter, as well as more external stories that a more relevant to those who aren't up at 3am running live-fire drills or whatever these dudes get up to.
Definitely worth a read and investigation of which concepts could be applied to ones' life; Unbeatable Mind is an inspiring and practical road map to achievement and surpassing your goals.

Implemented the strategies as I was listening. This book is a goldmine of personal development strategies. Had to listen to some parts twice because of how much information it has. It was well read.

Fire the narrator!
A terrible narration of a great message. The narrator is terrible. Can this please be re-narrated as the message is totally destroyed by the terrible narration!
