Publisher's Summary

This is a story of Jelena Dokic's survival. How she survived as a refugee twice. How she survived on the tennis court to become world number four. But, most importantly, how she survived her father, Damir Dokic, the tennis dad from hell.

From war-torn Yugoslavia to Sydney to Wimbledon, she narrates her hellish ascent to becoming one of the best tennis players in the women’s game, the abuse she endured at the hands of her father and her heartbreaking fall from the top. Jelena never told anyone the full truth of what she went through until now, and her unbreakable spirit will inspire you.

Great Book! Touching and sad

I could relate as a ex professional tennis player and not having a normal childhood . Traveling alone at a young age and the pressure I felt from my Dad. The abuse physical and mentally and the toll on your body training from a young age hour's per day causing injuries. Living out of a suit case and eat drink sleep tennis day after day

A tale of true grit

Loved her story and how she is strong after an upbringing like that. In a better environment she would have become a number 1, multi-slam winner. But even more admirable is how she handled herself and truly become bigger than many winners in the traditional sense. Real bravery.

Unbelievable

This is an honest representation of what Jelena went through from an early age into her twenties regarding the abuse she endured both mentally and physically at the hands of her dad.
It's a miracle she's even alive though scars will always remain.
This is pretty hard to listen to at times and you just want it to stop and reach out to help but feel so
helpless and so sad for her and are constantly hoping for some upturn in either her career or her childhood.

What a great book though!
I read sharapovas book before this and boy they couldn't have been more different.

A tennis prodigy

A tennis player who came across on tv as a spoilt brat. This statement couldn't be further from the truth. This is the compelling story of a talented tennis player and her struggle as a refugee, emotional and physical abuse, and the tennis world. A great read.

incredible life story

The story of Jelena Dokic rings a deep resounding bell in a reader's mind. Her story is a story of ferociousness, winning, abuse and family. Unbreakable is an open story of what success driven by grit, abuse and passion looks like. I am indebted to Jelena for such an honest, complete and balanced view on her life. What was going on in people's mind when Jelena was abused but winning?

Tough listen.

This is a tough listen. I’m not going to lie. But Jelena deserves to have her story listened to as she has been a silent victim for so long.

Bringing this story to light connects so many confusing dots over her time in the spotlight. I understand her now and deeply hope her healing continues.

Jelena is a true champion on and off the court.

Brave Woman

This is a well written story of horrific times a child endured. I am pleased Jelena has told her story. I hope this opens people's eyes, and alerts us all to act if we suspect abuse is occurring to our neighbours!

Underrated

Jelena Dokic is one of my childhood idols. I watch her play on TV numerous times as I grew up, however, just like everyone else, I could sense that there was always more to her story, something sinister.
We all know of her father’s ways but never did I realise he was capable of such evil.
Jelena’s life story is tragic, hopeful and captivating. Reading certain parts that I vividly recall in my mind and discovering new details I was completely oblivious to has been a whirlwind of emotions.
To know that life improves for Jelena to a state of stability and happiness got me through this magnificent read.
Speaking as a survivor of abuse, hvala puno Jelena. Xx

What a story

I’m a tennis fan and I loved Jelena before I read her book.
I love her tennis commentary and I think she is awesome. I’m so sorry about the abuse she suffered. I think if it happened today it would be a different story well I hope so anyway. I’m so proud of you and I’m proud that you are an Aussie. This book is raw and soul bearing but it’s a story of triumph and success. I highly recommend it.

Hard Going

I thinknshe has a terrible time but she can't blame others for the abuse she received at her father's hand. I think people would have helped her if she had have reached out to them. It went on for so many years with the abuse and mental anguish that he gave her. She gave in to her father too easily giving him all that money and power. I know it's a different culture but it was just soo wrong on so many levels

Captivating Story, Poor Narration

Sure, the writing is a little repetitive. Most biographies are. But I wish Jelena performed the reading rather boring performance here. Really let’s down powerful story about abuse and resilience. Such a shame.

Jelena. Please do a recording of this. I could listen to you any day.

Wow astounding

What a strong woman you are Jelena. What you went through at such a young age is frightening, I would not have survived. Keep going beautiful lady, you deserve so much happiness. Well narrated by Kelly Jones.

what a powerful story

For Jelena to perform at the level she did with such disfunction and chaos is remarkable strength of character and talent.

There is a need for the tennis industry to take some responsibility for younger players coming into the system so there is protection from the worst excesses of exploitation and abuse.

Hopefully there is a happier sequel.

Great book

I always admired Jelenas fight as a player and thought of her father as controlling but never have I ever anticipated the mental and physical abuse she endured. It takes a lot of courage to come out and we'll done on unravelling another layer of racism, and sexisism in our country and our sports community. I would love to read the book because I feel the narration has taken a lot away from the emotion.
