Bound into modern-day slavery by a contract he cannot break and sold by parents he never knew, Alek works alongside demons, spirits, witches, and even Death himself to collect on deals made with humanity. When Alek is forced to take a job from a local vampire hunting down a runaway thrall, he is immediately thrust into a world of blackmail and backstabbing, where the rules are nothing more than an inconvenience to ancient, supernatural predators.

Publisher's Summary
Alek Fitz is a reaper, a collection agent who works for the supernatural elements of the world, tracking down debtors and solving problems for clients as diverse as the Lords of Hell, vampires, Haitian loa, and goblins. He’s even worked for the Tooth Fairy on occasion. Based out of Cleveland, Ohio, Alek is the best in the game. As a literal slave to his job, he doesn’t have a choice.
When Death comes looking for someone to track down a thief, Alek is flung into a mess of vengeful undead, supernatural bureaucracy, and a fledgling imp war. As the consequences of failure become dire, he has few leads, and the clock is ticking. Only with the help of his friend Maggie - an ancient djinn with a complex past - can he hope to recover the stolen property, save the world, and just maybe wring a favor out of the Great Constant himself.
It’s a hell of a job, but somebody’s got to do it...

Luke Daniels does an outstanding job narrating and bringing the characters to life including subtleties in specific characters voices that reflect changes in their physiology. The story was engaging for me. I hope to heart much more from this series.

Want More Please!
I loved this book, I just want more. 5hrs to me seems a little on the short side even for a Urban Fantasy novel. My only real nit pick. What I did like:
- The fact the main character isn't a mage/vampire ect... is refreshing.
- Main character is likable and has plenty of room for character growth.
- Death appears in book one? Bold move.
- Luke Daniels does a wonderful job as always.
- Lucy
I recommend this book to anyone one who wants a good page turner and a quick read/listen. Hope there is more to come.

Good start to an interesting urban fantasy
This is a shorter audiobook, and there is a lot of story to pick up. I like the main character and the mystery is strange, but it gets solved well.
Heaven and Hell stuff is kinda boring for me at the moment, but the narrator kept me interested and the story unfolded wihtout too much preamble. I liked it, but I wouldn't rush to buy it outright.
I do like the use of technology in the book though. Many of the urban fantasy novels I have read seemed to forget texting or emails( in my limited exposure). So that was nice to read along side with. It also seems that the world is somewhat aware of the existence of the supernatural? I wasn't sure where the general zeitgeist was on it.

A must read
Alek Fitz is a 6.4” 28 year old-human with enough troll ancestry to give him a few perks while he still appears fairly human. He has magic infused tattoos and skin tough enough he can withstand a twelve-gage shot gun blast. He works as a debt for Valkyrie collections.
Maggie is his jinn and side kick that lives in his ring. She is a lie detector on humans. She can give advice and sense trouble from a mile away. Ada is Fitz’s boss who has owned him since he was a kid. She can literally inflict him pain through the barcode that is inscribe on his chest.
Death has a job that only Fitz can complete, and it must be kept on the down low, meaning discrete. Two hundred and seventeen souls are missing. This is totally different from his regular day job, which is collecting souls on people who have sold them for various deals. And Ada being Ada would never turn down this big paying job from Death.
Fitz hits the pavement, starts making calls, and follows leads. Occasionally, he is hindered by bureaucratic red tape (from hell’s office), uncooperative witnesses, being chased by a necromancer, and just bad leads. Then add a time deadline and he is working night and day.
Maggie has one day a year when she becomes corporal and that day is approaching. Fitz could only get Ada to commit to a “I will consider you having the time off.” if the job is done. Everyone is kicking his ass. And now some unknown person from Maggie’s past is looking for her.
This is a must read. It is fast paced full of action and good world building.

Worth a listen if you've got an extra credit
Being a Cleveland native, I got a good chuckle when I saw that this book is set in my hometown. That coupled with the synopsis including the words "fledgling imp war' meant I had to give it a listen. Overall, I enjoyed it. In a genre where all the protagonists are private detectives and bounty hunters, I thought Alec being a supernatural collection agent was an interesting take; although he still does the work of a detective, just with a different job title. It may be because I'm from there, but the fact that it's set in Cleveland is barely a factor in the story, beyond name dropping a few towns in the great Cleveland area. The Dresden Files takes place in Chicago and Jim Butcher really uses the history and design of the city as part of the story. This book really could've taken place in any generic city and it wouldn't have changed anything.
All that being said, I did like this book (although it was a bit short). I liked that Alec isn't a wizard or a demon or a druid or some other kind of super magical entity. I love his partnership with Meg. On the whole I'd say this own is worth checking out if you're a fan of the Dresden Files or Iron Druid series

Looking forward to more
Brian McClellan’s addition to urban fantasy that incorporates common myths & legends is an enjoyable listen.
-Avoids trying to be too clever with the plot
-Embraces tropes instead of wild deviations in a vain attempt to stroke the author’s ego.
-Different than Powdermage demonstrating Mr. McClellan has a little range.
-Entertaining well paced story that would be better if there were already half a dozen or so in the series to listen to back to back.
-Luke Daniels does a fine job, he would slide towards sounding like Atticus occasionally which it’s hard not to think of with the sub genre-narrator combo.

Luke Daniels can make any book sound interesting
Overall, I liked this story. It’s not perfect, but the premise is interesting and the execution is good. What makes this story a winner is the narration by Luke Daniels. I’ve listened to the Iron Druid Chronicles narrated by Daniels and loved them. Daniels doesn’t read the book; he becomes the characters. Not only is each individual character identifiable by the inflection/accent/cadence Daniels provides, but the emotions come through as well. I was amazed at the way Daniels conveyed the difference in Fitz’s speech when he had tusks and when he didn’t. That level of attention to detail elevates the story. The story itself is intriguing. Setting up reapers as working for a repo company is great. Death is a well-written character and I really want more of Luci in a future book. I’ll be getting the next book in the series.
