Story
“The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line,” writes Du Bois, in one of the most prophetic works in all of American literature. First published in 1903, this collection of 15 essays dared to describe the racism that prevailed at that time in America—and to demand an end to it. Du Bois’ writing draws on his early experiences, from teaching in the hills of Tennessee, to the death of his infant son, to his historic break with the conciliatory position of Booker T. Washington.

Story
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Young Henry Fleming used to play soldier and dream of being a hero, but when he faces his first battle - the Battle of Chancellorsville - he finds that heroism is not at all what he had expected. Shells burst in front of him like strange flowers, gunfire ripped toward him in great crackling sheets of flame, and all around him, blue-coated figures lie still on the blood-drenched grass. Remarkably, Stephen Crane wrote this realistic tale of the terror of war without ever witnessing a battle.

Story
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Excellent Narration
I had tried to get thru the first several chapters of Uncle Tom's Cabin on my own and trying to get the tone and demeanor of the southern vernacular was difficult and distracting for a New England native.
This narrator was so convincing in her reading that I felt like I was there as an observer.
Thanks so much for Audible.

Probably still as fresh as in 1850
I think that Harriet Beecher Stowe exquisitely balanced the sensibilities between North & South. The effect was a book in which almost anybody could see the important issues of slavery from different personal perspectives. And what a wonderful example Tom is of a genuine Christian under oppression. Obviously HBS was a wonderfully devout woman herself. Narration was great!

Anyone interested in the Civil War must read this!
What made the experience of listening to Uncle Tom's Cabin the most enjoyable?
This is a book of genius. Lincoln looks at the Author and told her that she, and her book, was the cause of the Civil War. That may be a simplification, but it played a huge role in mobilizing the society against slavery.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Uncle Tom's Cabin?
Everything, from front to back

Great story that got lost
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I am very sorry to say, but I gave up after half of a first chapter. The story seems to be great, as all important though horrifying stories are, but for me it is just "un-listenable".
What didn’t you like about Mary Sarah’s performance?
The performance is unacceptable. Ms. Sarah reads way too fast, she "swallows" ends of the words, combines words together and her attempts to change voices and imitate accents makes listening even more confusing. I just have general impression of what happened in the fragment I've listened to, majority of it was just lost on me.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Unfortunately, in my opinion, this interpretation of Uncle Tom's Cabin is not worth even this little money it costs. It's very disappointing.

tough listen. hard to believe such racism existed.
"To have faith like Uncle Tom" should be the acceptable term. Such a racist comment it has become "being an uncle Tom" that also is an unacceptable assumption. Tom wasn't bowing to the white man, he was putting his faith in the Lord Jesus and his perfect teachings. Tom was the perfect example of a disciple to Jesus. I will try to live like Uncle Tom. It should be WWUTD.

Brilliant story, poor narration
Would you try another book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe or narrated by Mary Sarah?
I'd read another book by the author, but will definitely avoid this narrator in future.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Uncle Tom's Cabin?
There were many, some memorable because of the terrible tragedy of them, others for the heroism of the characters. Many of these scenes were based on true events.
How could the performance have been better?
Although the narrator has a good voice and used an appropriate accent, the performance was jerky, the expression often didn't match the meaning, and many words were mispronounced.I got the impression that the narrator had not practised before she made the recording.
Did Uncle Tom's Cabin inspire you to do anything?
It brought home to me the horrors of slavery, and it also helped me understand some of the complicated reasons why this abuse of human beings persisted and was so difficult to end.It inspires me to think about what abuses still continue today, to which I may be turning a blind eye and which I may feel more comfortable to leave unchallenged, in the way that many basically good people allowed slavery to continue unchallenged.
Any additional comments?
The author must have been courageous to write this famous book, and I understand it had a profound effect on the history of the United States. The narration unfortunately does not do it justice.
