What is consciousness? Is the mind a machine? What makes us persons? How can we find the path to human maturity? These are among the fundamental questions that Rowan Williams helps us to think about in this deeply engaging exploration of what it means to be human. The book ends with a brief but profound meditation on the person of Christ, inviting us to consider how, through him, 'our humanity in all its variety, in all its vulnerability, has been taken into the heart of the divine life'.

Story
Parakeets make delightful pets. We cage them or clip their wings to keep them where we want them. Scot McKnight contends that many, conservatives and liberals alike, attempt the same thing with the Bible. We all try to tame it. McKnight's The Blue Parakeet calls Christians to stop taming the Bible and to let it speak anew to our heart. McKnight challenges us to rethink how to read the Bible, not just to puzzle it together into some systematic belief but to see it as a story that we're summoned to enter and to carry forward in our day.

Story
Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self." Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group.

In this hope-filled book, Nouwen offers a fresh interpretation of modern ministry. Here he offers inspiration to men and women who want to be of service in their Church or community but who have found the traditional ways of ministry alienating and ineffective. According to Nouwen, "the minister is called to recognize the sufferings of his time in his own heart and make that recognition the starting point of his service."

Story
What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace."

Spiritual platform for left-wing ideology
I purchased this book expecting deep spiritual teaching on the rarely written topic of gratitude to our wonderful Father.Unfortunately Joan chittisters constant references to political issues was very unpleasant. These issues have their place in other books. Drawing deep spirituality down to the political level does nothing good for these teachings. It keeps them on a surface level. Bishop Rowan on the other hand spoke deeply and on issue,With great wisdom. Unfortunately he only has a few sermons in this book. If you Joan, hated President Bush so much and the slight Marxist themes alluded to as well as other Progressive Notions ,not directly referred to but covertly referred to,perhaps it would have been more honest and less arrogant to elude that these are Gods views on these matters rather than your own ., presenting these thoughts in a more appropriate book on politics or culture would have been less manipulative. There are so few books well written on gratitude to God. I had high hopes of enjoying this listen. Shame on you Joan Chittister.
