Good story. Horrible narration.

I’m retired from the Air Force and can relate to much of this story. It has the hallmarks of authenticity, from the naivety of noobs, the stress that combat takes and the ignorance of midgrade Officers who flew desks. A good read.

But a horrible audiobook. The narrator seems to not know how punctuation should affect his speech pattern, rhythm and tense. He is at times mechanical and other times overly dramatic. He often stops mid-sentence and then hurriedly finishes it. There are also several times that the audio was dubbed as if the narrator made mistakes and had to correct them later. He is probably a nice guy but really bad at reading out loud. You can actually hear him swallow as if his throat was getting dry.

Buy the printed book. Don’t waste your money on the audiobook. The bad narrator will just piss you off.

This was not supposed to be fiction

This was listed under biographies and memoirs. The first sentence of the book tells you it’s a fictional piece of work. That’s very misleading. I wasn’t looking for fiction, I was looking for a biography or a memoir. I Wasted one credit on a lie

WOW!

After listening to Maj. Jackson on Jocko Podcast 275. I had to listen to this book.

The bravery & heroism of these crews was amazing. The skill & determination of these pilots is inspiring.

There were many leadership lessons to be learned in this book.

I highly recommend it.

Great Story.

Having served two tours as a RLO in Vietnam, this was a very well written and valid representation of our time in combat in Vietnam. Great job.

NOT a "combat story." VERY misleading title.

I'm at chapter 28 (9hrs into a 13hr book and 1 year into his tour) and, while it's a nice story, there's not been one "harrowing" combat story to speak of, so far (action starts at chapter 38...11+ hours in). A more appropriate title would be, "How I Learned to Fly a Helicopter and Ran Non-Combat missions in Vietnam," because the how-to explanations and technical descriptions are, at first, interesting, but eventually become excruciatingly boring.

And there's a whole chapter dedicated to him flying delivery/pickup missions (which is the bulk of the book) with his dad...a civilian...letting his dad take the controls...etc., even though he' never flown helicopter in his life. So, if his dad is flying missions with him in Vietnam, that should tell you something.

The narrator is a bit annoying and most all of his "character voices" all sound meek, timid and wimpy.

If you want a nice story about flying choppers in Vietnam, Undaunted Valor is ok. If you want nail-biting, combat action, you most definitely will not find it here.

Excellent

This was an excellent read. The author tells an amazing story that’s broken in to short chapters. The narrator has an odd speech pattern but it can be over looked. Great story!

Outstanding book about the war in Vietnam!

An outstanding book about the integration of helicopters into the battlefields of Vietnam. This book paints a very surreal picture of life as a combat helicopter pilot. The skills required to maneuver a helicopter in the jungles of Vietnam was a team effort. It was overall a very gritty story filled with laughter and sadness. A great tribute to all the helicopter crews who flew in combat. I couldn't put it down!

Bad narration

The book is amazing, the story is incredible and very interesting , but...

The voice of the narrator and him changing his voice to show different characters is good, but there are other annoying things. You hear mouse clicks in the background, smacking lips, a lot o "mouth sounds", in a couple of places the narrator stutters, there are pauses in narration, I even thought that I heard the narrator eating or swallowing. It was hard to listen sometimes, I could not focus completely, especially those mouse clicks were annoying.

This is a book which I will not listen again.

Awesome detail, good narration, must listen!

Found this through Jocko, loved every minute. Totally immersed in the missions and great detail to paint the picture of what it's like in the air, at that time.
