Publisher's Summary
National best seller
Fight cancer, diabetes, heart disease, weight gain, and even the aging process itself with one simple, scientifically proven plan to reverse disease - as well as prevent and reduce symptoms - from the world-renowned pioneer of lifestyle medicine.
Dean Ornish, MD, has directed revolutionary research proving, for the first time, that lifestyle changes can often reverse - undo! - the progression of many of the most common and costly chronic diseases and even begin reversing aging at a cellular level.
Medicare and many insurance companies now cover Dr. Ornish’s lifestyle medicine program for reversing chronic disease because it consistently achieves bigger changes in lifestyle, better clinical outcomes, larger cost savings, and greater adherence than have ever been reported - based on 40 years of research published in the leading peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals.
Now, in this landmark audiobook, he and Anne Ornish present a simple yet powerful new unifying theory explaining why these same lifestyle changes can reverse so many different chronic diseases and how quickly these benefits occur. They describe what it is, why it works, and how you can do it:
- Eat well: a whole foods, plant-based diet naturally low in fat and sugar and high in flavor. The “Ornish diet” has been rated “#1 for Heart Health” by U.S. News & World Report every year from 2011 to 2017.
- Move more: moderate exercise such as walking
- Stress less: including meditation and gentle yoga practices
- Love more: how love and intimacy transform loneliness into healing
With 70 recipes, easy-to-follow meal plans, tips for stocking your kitchen and eating out, recommended exercises, stress-reduction advice, and inspiring patient stories of life-transforming benefits - for example, several people improved so much after only nine weeks that they were able to avoid a heart transplant - Undo It! empowers listeners with new hope and new choices.
“The Ornishes’ work is elegant and simple and deserving of a Nobel Prize, since it can change the world!” (Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States)
“If you want to see what medicine will be like ten years from now, read this book today.” (Rita F. Redberg, MD, editor in chief, JAMA Internal Medicine)
“This is one of the most important books on health ever written.” (John Mackey, CEO, Whole Foods Market)

Surprisingly awful
This audiobook was pure torture. If you have any inclination of reading it, save your ears and your money by checking it out of the library. Bad stuff includes:
1. I was not aware when I sampled the book that half of the book is read by Anne Ornish, and that gal is painful to listen to. Slow talking and condescending too sweet just overall annoying. She talks to the reader like a small child. “Why do you eat? When do you eat? Do you really need a hug?” I skipped over nearly every section she wrote. Also, it’s just disruptive to the flow of the book to have narrators switch throughout.
2. Dean’s sections were too complex. And I say that as someone with a master’s degree in a research field. They were just hard to follow and not captivating. Conversely, Anne’s sections were way dumbed down. The real life application of the content was too entry level to be either interesting or helpful. This book missed the mark completely by reaching these two extremes.
3. The target audience appears to be people who struggle with emotional eating. I was not aware that was the overall thrust of the book. I was looking for health and nutrition education that would inspire Mel to implement new healthy practices. Instead the advice was stuff like eat at a table instead of in a car. A whole book of that stuff. It was painful.
I recognize Dr Ornish is a pioneer in his field and agree with his recommendations. However, I found this book utterly useless, a painful read as an audiobook and one of the few I’ve purchased (I listen to about 1 book a week) for which I truly wanted my money back.
Too bad. Just check it out from the library to capture the high level points.

Hard to get through
I follow a WFPB diet and read and listen to many of the experts. This book was poorly written. Too much old information and the audible version was horribly read. No energy, no passion, monotone. The only person more boring to listen to than Dean Ornish is his cowriter. They may be brilliant scientists but they should hire a better ghost writer and reader.

Better as a book than audiobook
I like the content of this audiobook however I felt this information isn’t new. Eat a plant based diet and take care of yourself.
However there is a lot of background information that proves why eating plant based diet is better for you.
Since it has a lot of technical info, which I liked, I felt it would be easier to read than listen to. They reference info in the pdf but it’s not in chronological with the chapters and that makes it hard to follow.

Disappointing
Although the cited research was interesting and informative, this work presented a dearth of actionable items. An interesting read, but low-impact as a worthwhile self-help tool. This book comes across largely as a thinly veiled marketing piece for other services. Not a fan of paying for an advertisement; I'm tossing this fish back into the pond.

Disappointed
given the stature of dr. ornish in his previous writings I found this book under par. plus the narration especially those sections by mrs. ornish was very annoying she sounds like she's trying to be a sex kitten it might be her real voice but it just was too ridiculous to have any faith in what she was saying.

Excellent read
I have read many books on the subject of a Whole Plant Based Diet by Barnard, McGregor, Popper, Ferman and McDougal and none of them come close to the Ornishes book, I truly place this up there with the teachings and science of Dr's Esseylstyn and Colin T Campbell.
Well read by the husband and wife (OK a little "flowery" at some points) but at least they have botherd like Esselstyn and Campbell to carry out their own research to support their belifs in a better future for all. For me it has all been about lifestyle change to promote longevity and this is a great bible to live by, weight loss to me was a side effect and not my aim (84.1 > 65kg).
Take your time absorb the facts and move forward to a better life without starving yourself to get there 😉👍

a better approach.
Be aware that this book does not tell you how to fully implement the programe, but about the component parts. it suggests you join one of the running groups. having said that it is very informative on the different aspects...

Missing PDF of the exercise tables
Anne talks about the exercise tables in the PDF but I can’t find them. Just food information. She ‘reads’ the description of the exercises with the bands but that’s pretty useless without a visual.
Overall, I did get a fair bit of info from this book but I feel it contradicts other info from authors such as Dr Michael Greger. I thought these guys were on the same page as each other. So now I’m a bit confused.
I found a lot of Anne’s narrative boring - especially the part where she goes on about what to eat when out and the questions to ask the restaurants. Honestly, I think most restaurants would tell you to take a hike if you went in asking all those questions and making the demands she suggests. Seriously, just eat at home if it’s such an issue.

Don't bother
The sections were Dean was reading was OK, but I could not stand Annes voice and the bits she was given to read were extremely boring. if I could handle listening to her for more than five minutes then I was bored in five minutes and 1 second.

A complete look at lifestyle factors
I have really enjoyed this book but I noticed not all the information is in the downloadable PDF as it should be. During the book they reference the PDF for certain things and I noticed they weren’t there. For this reason I think it would be better to own the book for all of the imagery and ensuring you get the complete experience from the book.
