Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

“Mr Darcy, I am eager to hear your explanation for the fact that quite a few people believe we are engaged.” It starts with a bit of well-meant advice. Colonel Fitzwilliam suggests to his cousin Darcy that, before he proposes to Elizabeth Bennet in Kent, perhaps he ought to discuss his plans with their families first. What neither man could have predicted however was that Lord Matlock would write the news to his sister, or that Viscount Saye would overhear and tell his friends, or that his friends might slip a little and let their friends know as well.

Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. Publisher's Summary
When Elizabeth Bennet first knew Mr. Darcy, she despised him and was sure he felt the same. Angered by his pride and reserve, influenced by the lies of the charming Mr. Wickham, she never troubled herself to believe he was anything other than the worst of men - until, one day, he unexpectedly proposed.
Mr. Darcy's passionate avowal of love causes Elizabeth to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about him. What she knows is that he is rich, handsome, clever, and very much in love with her. She, on the other hand, is poor, and can expect a future of increasing poverty if she does not marry. The incentives for her to accept him are strong, but she is honest enough to tell him that she does not return his affections. He says he can accept that - but will either of them ever be truly happy in a relationship of unequal affection?
Diverging from Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice at the proposal in the Hunsford parsonage, this story explores the kind of man Darcy is, even before his "proper humbling," and how such a man, so full of pride, so much in love, might have behaved had Elizabeth chosen to accept his original proposal.

In case you didn't love Darcy enough!
This gives a very believable alternative to P&P. Here, with Elizabeth deciding to say yes after the first proposal we see our favorite couple run into the obstacles we already know (how Darcy acts towards her family and society, Elizabeth's previous opinions of Darcy, Wickham, Bingley) and we actually get to see (hear) the conversations that help them work through this and eventually help Lizzy realize what we all know...Darcy is the ideal man!
The narration is also done quite well, with none of the characters being ruined by a weird voice. I definitely recommend this listen, though if you are looking for ::cough cough:: indecent scenes, you're looking at the wrong book (in my opinion, thank goodness).

Great alternate finish to the novel
Too many times, too often that is, a retelling of Pride and Prejudice becomes nothing more than a sordid romance novel, with kissing and fondling and make-out sessions...but not here. Here, what you get is an actual retelling, a different, alternate ending. How refreshing.
That is not to say there are not portions of the book dealing with affections, hands being pressed and the sort..this retelling is just much more true to the original than those others. The characters are not changed, they are simply there, and feel like those in the original.
If you liked the original, this one will allow you to revisit the Bennet household once more, and feel at home for a bit. Recommended.

The best pride and prejudice variation
I usually do not write reviews so it has taken a particularly extraordinary book to have me write. I am the daughter of an English professor and grew up with Pride and Prejudice at the dinner table. I know that it is my favorite book and was my father's favorite book. I read it to him on the last day of his life as he lay in hospice ravaged by Alzheimer's. I have laughed at myself (as Elizabeth would do) when I've read these variations voraciously. But after reading this version I realize that I was looking for answers that I was not able to glean on my own. I thank Ms Ormiston for this lovely work.

SO. GOOD.
I don't think I've ever wanted to listen to an audiobook more than this one! I was literally trying to find things to do in my house just so I'd have an excuse to tuck away and dive into this story. I'm not one to be tempted by fan fiction, but I was on an Austen kick... I'm sure you know how that goes. Needless to say, I LOVED this story. The characterization was spot on and the narration was great! I'll definitely recommend this to friends and will reread (or listen) to it again. Write more, Mrs. Ormiston, write more!

One of the Best P&P Variations Out There
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, of course.
Which scene was your favorite?
There were several scenes that made me hide my eyes and wish I could crawl under a rock out of embarressment for the characters--that's a good thing. I was excited to know what happened next. The best involved Wickham, Elizabeth, and Darcy--that is all I'll say.
Any additional comments?
My only complaint is that Mr. Darcy sometimes felt much too sappy for my liking. He's generally my favorite character, but there were a few instances in which I couldn't imagine Mr. Darcy being so much in love that he would act the way he would. The only reason the book didn't get a 5 star rating in all categories was this small detail.
The narrator was absolutely wonderful. She did a great job. I can not complain about how good she is in any way at all.

Excellence Throughout!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
As this production combines a flawless performance by Ms Corbett with the unique narrative of Ms Ormiston, I would recommend it without the slightest hesitation.
What did you like best about this story?
Of the countless P & P alternatives out there, this is one of those rare ones where all that's best of narrative, character portrayal, style and dialogue meet to create a lasting effect on any reader already an admirer of Ms Austen's timeless classic.
Which character – as performed by Carmela Corbett – was your favorite?
Ms Corbett with her melodious voice is a pleasure to listen to and though she does an admirable job of character shifts, I especially enjoyed her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet.
If you could rename Unequal Affections, what would you call it?
The Lifted Veil
Courting Miss Bennet
An Irresistible proposal
Appreciating Mr Darcy
A Betrothal of Convenience
Any additional comments?
My deepest gratitude to both the author and the narrator for a remarkably well done job.

Excellent P&P Variation
Having read many variations of this classic story, I appreciate when the author maintains the personalities and eccentricities of the characters from the original. No sex just a great story
If you could sum up Unequal Affections in three words, what would they be?
Thoughtful, clever, romantic
Who was your favorite character and why?
Always Darcy. He's noble, gentle, kind and strong. Recognises his faults once pointed out to him.
Which character – as performed by Carmela Corbett – was your favorite?
Elizabeth. Loved the way the reader spoke her character.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The current title is perfect
Any additional comments?
I have many P and P. Books on audio and this has to be one of if not the best. So easy to listen to and the story similar to the original but with a few twists. The author has written it beautifully, with some lovely language, to compliment Jane Austen's herself. Just hints of physical love and desires.

The reader sounds too harsh. No real sentiment or passion put into the different characters. At times it was even robotical. I nearly quit the book because of her performance.

Gave up on listening!
Overall this book is good. Great concept and well written.
However, I started out listening to it but gave up and read it instead.
The narrator was appalling and quite ruined it for me.
Delivered in a bland monotone with no inflection, little emphasis and very disjointed as though it had been recorded in one sentence at a time. No continuity and each word delivered as though the narrator had never seen it before. The whole inexpressive delivery was quite frankly irritating and, what should have been a brilliant storyline, was reduced by the narrator to a boring monologue which the narrator appeared to have no interest in at all..
I enjoyed the written one immensely!

I really loved this P&P retelling. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it, so I won't go into it. I had no problem finishing it and I will listen to it again.
I loved the narrator Carmela Corbett. Excellent pitch and pace throughout. She tells it with feeling.

Such Depth!
I loved this variation mostly for the depth of character and conversation written by the Author. It is deeply profound at times which further helps express the feelings of Darcy and Elizabeth and the truths of their relationship. The narration was just ok to me as it was hard to decipher the difference in female characters especially when they spoke amongst themselves and I would have preferred a more masculine tone but overall, I wouldn’t let that stop me from listening. I highly recommend and appreciate that it is included in the membership!

A weak story poorly narrated
This reworking of Elizabeth and Darcy really did not work. It was hard to see what the Author was trying to achieve. Was it an alternative to the original story or a ‘what happened next’ ? I could only get half way before I gave up.
The narration was like listening to someone who had just finished elocution lessons. Overly precise without any emotion.

Ignore the negative reviews
Ignore the extreme negative reviews. One reviewer criticises the work by asking what is the point of re-writing Jane Austen. Then why did that reviewer listen to / read a variation in the first place. Totally illogical.
I have read many P&P variations and this is my favourite by some distance. I would definitely recommend it. It delves in detail into the depth of feelings that both protagonists experience, as their relationship develops, in a very detailed and empathetic way without the sickly fluff of many versions. A most enjoyable approach.
I found the narrator quite acceptable. Excellent on the whole but I accept that Jane was too timid and compliant both in the novel and in the voice used. Other than that in my opinion the narrator did a fine job.

A fantastic 'what if...'
I found the voice plausible and the characters true to the original. It was delightful to spend more time with Elizabeth, Darcy and the others.

Terrible could not get beyond 20mins
Awful, story, characterisation and narration. The first 20mins only keep drawing out the moment darcy proposed and Elizabeth deliberating over several days.

Not enough for me
I have a tumultuous relationship with P&P fanfics. Some I love and others I cringe. This one fell somewhere in between. To be honest, I was getting so bored I bailed. Some of the initial conversations were good, but I am not fond of a possessive Darcy, so it started going downhill fast for me. Thank you Audible for putting it in the "included" group so I didn't use a credit on it.

Enjoyable but a little repetitive
I've read a few what-ifs and continuations of P&P and this one was the best so far, it idn't make me cringe like lots of others. Well intertwined with events from the original that needed to remained unchanged. Could do with a really good edit but it allowed me more time with Elizabeth and Darcy so I'm grateful to the author and to Audible.

P&P readers will like this variation
Actually quite a good variation - it did prattle on a bit, going over and over things that the fabulous Jane Austen would not have done, but overall it was enjoyable

Absolutely brilliant
I am a huge pride and prejudice fan! And I absolutely loved this book. I would even go as far to say that I loved more than the original. Very true to the language of the day. But hold a beautiful and loving twist on the story. I keep listening to it over and over again.

Wonderful
I absolutely loved this Pride & Prejudice variation. Most in this genre are pretty average but this was delightful.
