Publisher's Summary

The apocalypse has ended for Adrian Ring, and the rebuilding of the world has begun. But have all the stories of the old world's death been told?

Elsewhere on Earth, there's a plane filled with innocents, and a criminal could wipe it from the skies with a tide of undeath. A young man in Manhattan is going mad with hunger and fear. A veterinarian races to save her animal patients and their owners one by one. A drunk lunatic is driven to self-destruction, craving the undead horde and the absolution they will give him. And finally, what of the long-awaited conclusion to Eddie Smith's tale, as his convoy heads north toward Adrian at Bastion?

Set in the world of Chris Philbrook's best-selling zombie epic Adrian's Undead Diary, Unhappy Endings tells these darkest of stories and many more.

Full list of authors includes: Rob Roche, Tracy Wilson, Josh Green, Christopher MacDonald, Dennis Pekkala, A. Ben Carpenter, Wendi Haegle, and Steve Gonzales.

There are still so many untold stories

Unhappy Endings edited by Chris Philbrook is a collection of sixteen short stories (one story has four parts) which all take place in the universe of Adrian’s Undead Diary (AUD) series created by Mr. Philbrook. If you haven’t read the series I strongly suggest you do before reading Unhappy Endings. Several of the stories have direct enough references to AUD that they contain subtle spoilers within. There is a forward where the author explains how this collection came into being. I purchased Unhappy Endings because I have enjoyed Mr. Philbrook’s other titles so much.

The story with four parts, Eddie Smith, is written by Chris Philbrook, author of AUD. The other authors include Christopher MacDonald, Steve Gonzales, Joe Tremblay, Lee Smallwood, Tracy Wilson, Sherry Knight, Shane Hershey, Alan MacRaffen, Josh Green, Dennis Pekkala, A. Ben Carpenter, Wendie Haegle, Rob Roche, J. C. Fiske, and Krista Blasevick Pullin

In the Arms of the Dead by Christopher McDonald is just creepy, really creepy. I cannot shake the visual of Alan walking along smiling with Emily trailing after him. Rose by Wendi Haegle reminded me of Stephen King. It was very easy for me to see Rose inhabiting one of Mr. King’s stories. Amy’s Daycare by Sherry Knight just plain broke my heart. This is one that you have to read the AUD series before the full impact of the story hits home. All the stories are good and all involve some aspect of the zombie apocalypse. The best way to describe it is the lens the reader saw events through in AUD, is widened significantly in this collection. We meet characters who while not directly intersecting with Adrian’s story still affect events in the larger universe.

James Foster does an excellent job narrating the audiobook. He narrated all eight of the AUD audiobooks so this is familiar territory for him. He brings emotion and lack of emotion, which frankly can be scarier, to the character’s voices. Mr. Foster has no problem with any voice, male, female, adult or child. His voice is always clear and his volume remains consistent. The production values are great.

I hope Mr. Philbrook considers another collection like this one. There are still so many untold stories from the AUD universe. Having the different authors participate gives the collection a different feel. It is a new perspective on the familiar universe but with new stories and characters. I really enjoyed it.

Unhappy Endings. . . A Collaborative Win!

Absolutely Blown Away! Yep, this sentiment pretty much sums up how I felt right out of the gate, listening to the collaborative genius of the many talented authors, and/or collaborators, whose short stories appear in (Unhappy Endings) Volume 1. This combined effort, served to shine a bright spotlight on the the creative talents of each individual. . . . the final product, a collaborative anomaly.

The stories written for this volume took the levels of sheer terror, excitement and intrigue to whole new heights, with a no holds barred approach to shock value. After I would finish with one story, I would think: "there is no way the next one can be more mind-bending than this." Yet, everyone was equally shocking and spectacular!

There were certainly several stories which stood out to me on a personal level, for one reason or the other. In particular, the Zombies on the plane took that concept to dimensions I have never encountered in any other book. Just Wow! The ending was not what I was expecting and this one is definitely not for the faint of heart, for sure, and a real head spinning, adrenaline rush of a ride/flight!

Another centered around a sweet dog named Duke. This one had a profound impact on me, and will not soon be forgotten. . simply fantastic!

Invest a credit, and get ready to be propelled into new dimensions of sheer zombie spectacularity!

Chris Philbrook always delivers, and I am so, so glad I found his work!

Narrator, Mr. James Foster, always reigns supreme, and just such a natural!

Happy listening!

Well.............

What did you love best about Unhappy Endings?

I'm a huge fan of "Adrian's Diary" - huge - the story's in this collection are all very well
written and fun.

Who was your favorite character and why?

No favorite story - they were all good.

Which character – as performed by James Foster – was your favorite?

James Foster is AMAZING!!

Who was the most memorable character of Unhappy Endings and why?

Day care story was heart wrenching.

Any additional comments?

Again a huge fan - but I'm not super happy with collections of anything. I think a fluid story - like "Adrian's Diary" is more interesting and fun to listens to. I like to get into characters and love them or hate them- with this collection of stories - well just not a fan- I would not enjoy another book like this.

Solid Edition to the AUD Universe

This is a collection of short stories from the Adrian's Undead Diary universe. They are not all written by the primary author (Chris Philbrook) but they are all considered canon. These stories all have *spoiler alert* unhappy endings. Do you like what I did there? They are all well written. Some of them were so spot on I could not even tell they weren't written by Philbrook. So they are all solid stories. If you liked AUD, you need this. If you have not read any AUD, do not start here. Start with Dark Recollections. You can thank me later, because AUD is pretty much awesomeness.

James Foster is the Man. He narrates this like a boss.

Stand alone short stories

Any additional comments?

If you love "first day" and "outbreak" zombie stories you will love this collection from various writers with Philbrookian taste. One note, some of the stories and characters are left a bit open ended so if that bothers you - you've been warned. A couple of them are not for the faint of heart either - these are serious zombie stories. No sex - thank heavens, plenty of gore, and you don't have to have read Philbrook's other works to listen to this one. Well worth the credit, I would certainly buy the next collection. Immensely enjoyable!

Like bonus features for AUD

I wasn't sure what to expect when I downloaded this but am really glad I did! The stories were all great with very different points of view. However, I would recommend reading the AUD series first so you don't spoil any of the details.

Terrific

What did you love best about Unhappy Endings?

What I love best about this book is the author let the fans write most of the stories. So you get a different angle on the whole series
