Publisher's Summary

Katie LeClair has finally settled down as the new doctor in Baxter, Michigan. After years of moving, schooling, and training, she wants nothing more than to find a place she can call home, and a small town outside of Ann Arbor seems perfect.

Katie quickly gets to work in building a life for herself in Baxter, and beyond reviving her love life, she also finds a pair of business partners in a team of father and son family practitioners. But that idyllic dream is immediately shattered when one of her patients is found dead. That wouldn't be the worst thing, except the death is ruled a suicide, and as evidence has it, the suicide was a result of the medication Katie had prescribed. But she doesn't remember writing it.

When a closer investigation reveals it was murder, Katie is catapulted into an off-the-books investigation that leads her down a dark path of past secrets. But someone is willing to kill to keep part of the town's history in the shadows, and Katie must race to find out who before it's too late.

great read

excellent story with lots of twists and turns. I'm usually good at calling the end but this one left me stumped. Dr. Katie is a great character and easy to like.

LOVE DR. KATIE LECLAIRE

THIS MAY BE A "COZY," BUT IT IS WELL WRITTEN AND INTELLIGENT. THE CHARACTERS HAVE SOME DEPTH, AND NOT BECAUSE OF SECRETS. THEIR PERSONALITIES ARE DISTINCT AND BELIEVABLE. I AM SO LOOKING FORWARD TO BOOK 2 AND GETTING TO KNOW THESE CHARACTERS BETTER.

Not really interesting.

there were too many characters too many stories trying to go on at the same time that didn't really come together in the end. It was confusing keeping the characters straight. I really had a hard time staying in the story.

Repetitive and clunky.

I couldn't finish this book. Descriptions of people and actions were so repetitive I could speak along with the narrator without having ever read the book before. Exposition and transition from one scene to another was clunky and dull. It should have certainly been written in first person instead of third. Awkward and hollow writing. The narrator does a nice job considering what she has to work with.

Struggled to finish this one. Too many unnecessary details and boring plot. Narrator was ok.

Got so bored

It could have been so good...but... it was so predictable and like watching paint dry. Sorry had to fast forward the last couple of hours and I was right.

Nancy Drew for grown ups.

This was an easy listen and while not a bad story, I would recommend it more to the Murder She Wrote enthusiasts more than people who like dark, psychological thrillers or true crime. Fewer twists and turns than a Roman road, but the characters are well written and likable and the narrator did a smashing job, especially with the Michigan accents, without making them a caricature.

It's fine but unsatisfying

I listened to the end but honestly only because I needed background sounds. The red herrings were ridiculous, the peripheral characters (best friend and love interest) were boring and unnecessary. I don't want to be unkind to the author but this is a series of books and I'm assuming they've managed to get a paycheck out of it already, so don't waste your time.

Enjoyable listen

Good story and good narrator. Had already listened to Book 2 of the series. Shame I hadn’t listened to this one first, as I did know some of the ending of this one in advance. Nonetheless, a pleasant listen, with a likeable main character.

A decent cosy drama with an amateur sleuth

This is a decent story about a newly-qualified doctor who ends up investigating the suspicious death of a patient, and uncovers far more than she expected in a small town where everyone knows everyone else, but not all of the secrets. She's a little slow on the uptake at times, but that adds a bit of tension. Satisfactory ending, closing this story.

I felt that the author included too much detail at times, which didn't help move the story along, and there were a few minor loose ends left dangling.

rather slow

some good ideas, like the mystery surrounding the pills bottle, however now well enough executed to be captivating
