Publisher's Summary

Just as World War II called an earlier generation to greatness, so the climate crisis is calling today's rising youth to action: to create a better future. In Unstoppable, Bill Nye crystallizes and expands the message for which he is best known and beloved. That message is that with a combination of optimism and scientific curiosity, all obstacles become opportunities, and the possibilities of our world become limitless.

With a scientist's thirst for knowledge and an engineer's vision of what can be, Bill Nye sees today's environmental issues not as insurmountable, depressing problems but as chances for our society to rise to the challenge and create a cleaner, healthier, smarter world. We need not accept that transportation consumes half our energy and that two-thirds of the energy you put into your car is immediately thrown away out the tailpipe. We need not accept that dangerous emissions are the price we must pay for a vibrant economy and a comfortable life. Above all, we need not accept that we will leave our children a planet that is dirty, overheated, and depleted of resources. As Bill shares his vision, he debunks some of the most persistent myths and misunderstandings about global warming. When you are done listening, you'll be enlightened and empowered. Chances are you'll be smiling, too, ready to join Bill and change the world.

Critic Reviews

"As narrator, Nye uses his natural energy and enthusiasm to make this book compelling and thought-provoking.... He delivers his words masterfully and slows down a bit so we can more clearly understand the science behind his policy prescriptions." ( AudioFile)

Couldn't stop listening!

I enjoyed listening to the Science Guy's reading of Unstoppable. As a scientist, I found the book to be focused more on the technological/engineering aspects of climate change than the science, but that's okay, because the science behind the technology is fascinating. For anyone concerned that this book may be laden with smug, self-righteous preaching from the progressive pulpit and attempt to convert you to veganism or whatever (like impassioned pleas to fight climate change unfortunately tend to be), don't worry: This book is a rational argument for why we have to fix climate change, but absolutely do not have to regress from our American standards of living to do so. On that note, I'm glad Mr. Nye admits in Unstoppable that he has come to a more reasonable assessment of GMOs since publishing Undeniable. Like any scientifically-minded person, he was able to change his viewpoint after careful assessment of scientific data. I hope this book can inspire others to do so as well.

The End is Nye

I didn’t grow up watching Bill Nye on TV, because his show didn’t extend as far as England, where I spent my childhood. So Bill Nye the Science Guy was an unknown quantity for me. This talking book, ‘Unstoppable’, was a pleasant first encounter with this infectiously enthusiastic science geek.

The book is all about climate change. He treats climate change as if it is an established scientific truth, rather than a dubious theory - and of course in this he is absolutely right. He presents a lot of evidence to support the climate change hypothesis. There is, in any case, an overwhelming global scientific consensus supporting the idea that climate change is a reality, and, these days, the only climate change deniers in the world are: 1) greedy conservatives who want to continue to make money from fossil fuels and don’t care about any damage done; 2) conspiracy theorists and 3) the poorly educated.

He isn’t horribly scathing about these groups. He hints at criticism of them, but he is more about encouraging people to understand what is happening and then persuading them to do everything in their power to see if the catastrophic effects of climate change can be held at bay.

Much of this involves large scale infrastructure developments, such as wind, solar and nuclear power and many other initiatives, some of them very imaginative. He points out that these big capital projects might be expensive compared to the continued use of fossil fuels, but only because fossil fuels are artificially subsidised in the sense that people using them aren’t penalised for the environmental damage they wreak.

Moving on from big clean energy schemes, he later focusses on things that can be done in the home to make them more eco-friendly places. He admits he is an obsessive hobbyist who has turned his own home into a futuristic warren of eco gadgets, and acknowledges that we probably won’t all go to these lengths, but he does set us a superb example and suggests some excellent ways to conserve and harness energy.

As you can see, Bill Nye was already preaching to a converted listener. I liked the fact that he offered countless optimisitic and constructive suggestions to address this troubling problem, and I liked this book.

Bill Nye is the Man, Man!

Bill Nye did an excellent job of making an intelligent and thought provoking book about climate change and what we can do as a species to correct it. He starts out by talking about the problems and issues on a large scale and then brings it down to a smaller scale (his own house) in the second half of the book. Lots of puns and an excellent job of narrating. Enjoyed every second of it.

Must read/listen

This was an aweaome book! Bill Nye is an incredibly engaging writer....but I knew that from reading his last book. He gives the information simple enough to be understood by any intelligent person, but not so simple as to bore those who are scientifically literate. He doesn't sound like an alarmist, but does stress the importance of action. Thoughtful and logical solutions are presented as well as a few fanciful options. I am very glad he narrated the book himself....he delivers like know one else can. Awesome book Mr. Nye!

All about energy....

What would have made Unstoppable better?

....about 3/4 the way through this book and I have been less than impressed. This is a class on human demand for more energy. Old, current, and future issues and ways forward. As a scientist myself (a biologist), I think this book is a huge missed opportunity to bring to discussion the impacts of these energy systems on the planet itself. Nye's chief concern is providing more energy for people more cleanly as overpopulation skyrockets, and his ideas are often amazing. However, this would be an excellent time to also discuss the ramifications. I cannot remember a single time this book mentions species decline, loss of biodiversity, habitat loss, or the current mass extinction. I am sure a person of Nye's intellect knows well these concerns, his last book proved that in excellent fashion. In contrast, Unstoppable feels like someone from "big energy" trying to sell me something, or pitch me an investment opportunity. This book has an amazing opportunity to open the reader's eyes to the potential problems associated with our energy solutions, and further our efforts to change the world for the better......but in my opinion fails.

What didn’t you like about Bill Nye’s performance?

He always performs the narration very well.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Unstoppable?

He often mentions choosing one solution with less negative impacts over the secondary option with more negative impacts. I agree that is a logical decision. However, this doesn't jive with Nye's driving spirit of innovation. He otherwise champions creating new and better ideas going forward..... not just choosing the lesser of two evils.

Just as I expected, brilliant!

This book went very into depth of the many struggles that face the human race. I definitely recommend it for anyone curious about the challenges we have to conquer to thrive. I suggest this book for anyone who is interested in science at least a little bit. Rockets, climate change, water salinity, bucky balls, they are all here!

Bill Nye strikes again!

This is one of the best, and most simply insightful books I have ever read (or listened to.)
First it's narrated by the science guy himself. This is the best part, he is able to draw you in with his excitement and wit.
Bill brings simple ideas to a very complex problem. He is a very intelligent and thoughtful man, and this comes through in this book.
Climate change skeptics and deniers should give this book a listen. It's fantastic food for thought for anyone.
I hope that this book becomes educational curriculum for students of all ages.

Change the world!

mein kampf of leftie propaganda

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

the book's facts are along the lines of "We, the chosen ones of the left, the morally superior and benevolent know better than anyone else and our facts tramp anyone else's facts"

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Bill Nye?

narrator is marginally less annoying that the ideas he tries to flog

A beautiful explanation, like no other

Would you consider the audio edition of Unstoppable to be better than the print version?

I have not read (and am unaware of) a print version to this audio book. Doubtlessly I would read it, however Bills reading is phenomenal. It is concise, simple (though thoroughly in depth) and entertaining.

What other book might you compare Unstoppable to, and why?

"the science of every day life" by Marty Jopson has a similar vibe to it. It attempts to relieve some of the complexity around some of the more interesting things which go unnoticed in our day to day life.
Comparisons can also be drawn to "On the Origin Of Species" and the "Selfish gene". Both due to the similarity in topic, but also die to the gifted nature of the auther / speaker.

What about Bill Nye’s performance did you like?

There is a reason Bill Nye is the prominent figure in mainstream science that he is. He is extremely witty, humble and intellectual.

Any additional comments?

This is NOT the book (/audio book) to convince a disbeliever in evolution of its validity. It is less concerned with arguing contradictory claims, and more concerned with highlighting simple beauties that may not have been considered by an evolution lover/thinker/scientist
