Publisher's Summary
From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Kendra Elliot.
When an eleven-year-old is abducted on her way to school, the FBI doesn’t waste a moment, sending agents to scour the area and embedding Special Agent Ava McLane with the distraught family. In the eye of the storm is local detective Mason Callahan, whose life is crumbling to pieces - he’s related to the victim, and his longtime confidential informant has just been murdered.
Both he and Agent McLane hole up in the victim’s family home. Every second counts in a kidnapping case, and the stakes keep rising the longer the girl is missing. As Ava and Mason struggle to hold the family together in their darkest hour, the two investigators find themselves drawn to each other.

Annoying narration.
I am not done with this book but am finding myself so annoyed I just have to vent. I think I like the story but the narration is so distracting I can't be sure. Why, why, why is a woman narrating every other chapter? This isn't "Gone Girl", it doesn't lend itself to two narrators. The male narrator is fine but just as I'm settling into the story this perky, high pitched voice butts in. I hope I get used to the woman's voice because I have bought two books in this series. Sometimes it seems audio books are simply trying too hard.

Two Readers - one too many
Any additional comments?
Two readers and they take turns with the chapters. Two different voices for each character, depending on which reader you are listening to at the time. Amy McFadden's voice is not pleasant.
The story drags on with very little actual activity taking place. Yawn! I listened for two hours and that was enough.

Wish the narration was different!
Would you listen to Vanished again? Why?
Yes because I thought the plot of the book was very good. I didn't care for the narration but it wouldn't stop me from listening to it again.
What did you like best about this story?
The plot
What three words best describe Nick Podehl and Amy McFadden ’s voice?
Stick to genders
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes because I wanted to find out what happened next.
Any additional comments?
The narration was not horrible but it wasn't great either. Amy McFadden has a higher pitched voice than I think works well for most of the characters. Too many of the characters sound like teens because of the high pitch. That being said, the narration wasn't terrible. But I think if you have a male and female narrator, you should have the female do all the female voices and the male do all the male voices. Having one narrator do all the male and female voices in every other chapter just means that none of the voices stay the same throughout the book. I like knowing who is talking without having to be told "Bob said" or "Sarah said."

waste of time
What disappointed you about Vanished?
The female narrators voice was the worst I've ever heard! They should have let Nick Podehl do all the male voices and find another female do all the women.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Vanished?
I don't know!
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Nick Podehl and Amy McFadden ?
Nick was fine. I would have used Susan Erickson instead of Amy
What character would you cut from Vanished?
none
Any additional comments?
The plot (even though I haven't finished the book yet) is interesting and enjoyable. Amy McFadden is making it hard though to finish it. Oh well, she is another narrator that I'll knock off my list of books if she is the narrating, I'll not buy.

This was not for me I guess. So Boring.
I didn't really care for this story at all, it just seemed ramble on and on about nothing. A lot of blah blah blah....
The story was so very boring too. I got about half way through and just gave up and didn't finish it. Since my mom read this book I asked her who did it and what happened. Well, after she told me, I am glad I didn't waste anymore time, because she didn't tell me anything that would have made me wish I had finished it. No surprises, nothing.
I didn't care for the narration either. One or the other would have been better. Things seemed to get lost in translation. Maybe if Nick Podehl did all the male characters and Amy McFadden did all the female characters and they read it together it would have been much better, but they did not, so this is where we get lost in translation..

A cop's past shooting comes back to haunt him 20 years later. This book is about the murder of a prostitute/police informant and the kidnapping of a young girl. What ties them together? It is also about the budding relationship between the cop and a female FBI agent.

Another edge of your seat read and GREAT listen!
Kendra Elliot just gets better and BETTER! In this one Detective Mason Callahan's life is unraveling right in front of his eyes ~ his son's step sister has been kidnapped, one of his confidential informants has come up dead....even the dog that's not his dog has dissapeared. And out of all the people who he thinks he could count on it's actually FBI Special Agent Ava McLane, a woman he's just met ~ but a woman he's drawn to in spite of his life spiraling out of his control.
Oh, what a wicked, wicked web Ms. Elliot has woven for us! LOL, I'm totally one of those people who looks for red herrings and guesses whodunnit all through my books, and she had me hopping in this one: and I had NO clue!! The plot is tight and intense, the characters are likable and believable ~ even Mason's ex wife & her whole scenario ~ just a great read for us suspense lovers!
As for the audio this one takes a different approach than most; with both a male and a female narrator, who switch up chapters. It took me a few chapters to get used to the rhythm, but it totally worked with this book and kept me riveted until the last second. Both narrators were very good!

A solid, well researched story
Mason Callahan, a Detective with the Oregon State Police, is working with the FBI’s Special Agent Ava McLane in a chilling case of child abduction. The child in question is the step daughter of Mason’s ex wife. It was very interesting to learn how the FBI react to and treat child abduction. It’s given top priority and their CARD (Child Abduction Rapid Deployment) Team are immediately sent out to assist the local police force with their expertise in this most emotional and terrifying crime.
Running alongside and interwoven is the brutal murder of Josie, Mason’s confidential informant. Those two combined factors make this mystery/thriller lean more towards the psychological and as Mason’s life quickly spirals out of control he realises someone has it in for him…but he doesn’t know who or why.
Mason and Ava are both dedicated and committed to their respective jobs and I like that their personal story doesn’t overshadow and take over the main focus of the story. There’s quite a large cast of characters who are all given enough consideration to make them real and substantial. Mason and Ava have depth and the character development is so good, it’s impossible not to like, and be drawn to, them. Mason intrigued me with his cowboy hat and boots and the emotions he kept in well in check.
'Under that ‘by the book’ cowboy was a gentleman with a big heart'
The suspense and tensions are played out skillfully, an intricate, involved and very conceivable storyline kept me absorbed and entertained throughout. The writing expresses perfectly the drama, sadness and feelings of utter helplessness and the emotional content is powerful. The past and present are interwoven culminating in a tense and moving finale. I couldn’t help but be a little sorry for the culprit and his sad life.
A solid, well researched story. I look forward to Mason Callahan #2

I love listening to Kendra's work especially when it is combined with Amy and Nick's narration.
I enjoy the mix of thrilling suspense and red hot romance.
The story is an intelligent thriller with a flawed but lovable hero and one hell of a strong female lead.
I thoroughly recommend this book to readers who love a good mystery with a side helping of steamy romance. I'm off to listen to book two.

dual narrators don't work
Both of these narrators are good on their own, but it doesn't work together. They have different voices for the same characters and they don't match. Each swap over just annoys.

Vanished
Gripping storyline with interesting characters and fascinating family dynamics. Plenty of twists and turns in the plot ensure you just want to keep listening so probably not good if you have to work the nexr day. Great insight intp hostage negotiations was a bonus too.
