One moment June Nealon was happily looking forward to years full of laughter and adventure with her family, and the next she was staring into a future that was as empty as her heart. Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger's syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. But he has a special focus on one subject - forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he's always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he's usually right. But when Jacob's small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob's behaviors are hallmark Asperger's, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police.

Really wanted to like it but......
I really wanted to like this book but I just did not. I liked the idea of different narrators, but the woman was so off-putting that I hated the main character. I never could connect with her. The other readers were not as bad, but there was a lot of background noises that were very distracting. As for the story line, I get the feeling that the author is trying to show you how much research she did for the book but it just doesn’t fit. There are so many distracting side stories and a bunch of facts that are not relevant to the storyline. The main character is not relatable at all.
Very disappointed and will not be listening to any others by this author or the reader for main character.

Two things that trouble me about this book.
I don't write many reviews, but I really had to say something here. It is really irresponsible of you! You give a recipe to make meth. What are you thinking?!! It wouldn't hurt your story line to cut it out.
The second is just a pet peeve. I always assumed that you had professionals doing your readings. If you don't know the words or how they are properly pronounced - look it up! Saguaro is pronounced suh-wahr-oh (g makes an "h" sound) and I'm assuming your "Cutcena doll" is a Kachina Doll. Which is pronounced Kuh-chee-nuh. It was like nails on a chalkboard.

Disappointing
I had trouble finishing this book and must say I was disappointed. Other Jodi Picoult books, I've enjoyed. This one seemed to drag on and on and was implausible in places. It could have been an interesting story, but somehow became very boring. The narration was too slow and pretty average, across the board. Sorry...this one didn't do it for me

Mysterious & terrifying until the very end
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved the father. He lied, cheated & stole for what was best for his daughter, the mark of a true parent in my opinion. He was willing to go to any length to ensure that his daughter was safe from her mother and her boyfriend.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I must say, this book did cause me to shed a few tears, mainly because for me it hits very close to home. In my own childhood, my mother was an alcoholic & drug addict. I can recall coming home from school not being able to wake her, not knowing if she was just drunk or if I should call 911. My own mother would take us to her dealers houses in the middle of the night, not concerned with if we had school the following day or if she was putting us in harms way. In this sense, I identify with this book.
The repressed memories are a very interesting subject that I look forward to learning more about, but also in a way, it is terrifying to think you could learn something that you may not want to know.
To this day, my mother is a drug addict and alcoholic and even though I have forgiven her, I have no desire to forge a relationship with her. It's a strange feeling to know that you should have feelings for someone as special as your mother who should have walked to the edges of the earth for you, and yet feel the same as if you were passing a stranger on the street of a busy street.
The ending of this book really threw me for a loop. During the last 5 minutes, you are sure you see how this is playing out and at the very end you find out exactly why the father took his little girl away from her mother.
Sometimes it's vital to take heed to those gut feelings.

Lies. Lies. And more lies.
Usually a huge fan of Picoult’s work, this book was trash. I kept waiting for her to twist the lies each character was spewing but instead she allowed each one of them to get away with their own twisted version of reality. I’m horribly overwhelmed and disappointed. It does give me something to think about, whether I want to or not.

Usually A Picoult Fan...
I have greatly enjoyed other books by this author, especially the first class, multi-faceted Small Great Things, but I detested this one. Saccharine, poorly researched legally, one-dimensional characters and a one-sided moral perspective that condones child abduction and taking justice into your own hands as a parent, without any exploration of appropriate legal channels and child protection procedures. Don’t understand how she got this one
so wrong!

Another enthralling court room drama
Another brilliant story from Jodi Picoult: compelling narrative, well developed characters with a tangible emotional undercurrent that provides for a gripping read. The dialogue is excellent and believable and the multiple perspectives gives the off kilter story real depth. Like all of Picoult's books that I have listened to, the moral dimension makes the stories more vivid leaving traces of the nuances with you long after you have finished reading or listening. I really loved this and look forward to my next one. Highly recommended

Great, but no where near her best.
jodi is my favourite writer. Always has been. but this book is just OK. it isn't her best story line. but I don't regret part listening and reading to it.
the story line wasn't the best.
each to their own.
I didn't feel like I connected very well to some of the narrators and I think that makes all the difference when listening to audio books.

Hideous narration
I couldn't listen to this book. The narration was TERRIBLE. Sounded like a robot. I'm not sure it's actually a person reading it.

narration is just awful
The narration was just awful. Made it hard to follow the story. The mexican accents were the worst part for me.

Brilliant
Brilliant! So many layers it kept unfolding. Really well narrated and such depth to the characters.
