Publisher's Summary
After saving the Empire's richest province from a foreign army, Marcus and the men who protect him have been in hiding. Their lives will be forfeit if they are seen in Rome.
But times have changed. Marcus's protector, the patrician legion commander Scaurus, has been summoned home by his mentor, a powerful senator who has decided he must act to save the empire from its debauched ruler's reign of terror.
Rome is a hotbed of conspiracy and treachery and the senator is not the only contender for power. The emperor himself plans to destroy those he mistrusts, and no-one is safe.
Marcus is assigned his own, unique role in the conspiracy. He will become a gladiator once more. But this time, his only opponent will be Commodus himself....

disappointed
more of a historical text than a story of fiction. 11 incredible books in this series brilliantly written, and given force by the splendid narration of Saul reichlin, let down at the last by lists of names and repetition of views , I've read the series several times and praised highly, but if read again I'll gladly miss this one as a non entity.

Interesting part of History
The story is interesting, however, it is not as action packed as previous novels, a lot of politics and intrigue. It does lead on to a new era, and a potential for many more adventures.

A bit of a trial to finish this book
Not my favourite book in the series a series best when describing action rather than long detailed explanations that frankly became dull Does stick loosely to reality of the assignation and aftermath of Commodes Well read by Saul Reichlin More action please in next book
